There's really no reason. People sometimes used them to mark their uploads "UppedbyDeeps" or somesuch, but I can't really see the point.
Don't be so quick to judge others, my friend. There are several good reasons for password-protecting files, and it's not about the convenience of the downloaders.

As someone who has uploaded literally thousands of vids over twelve years, I can say with confidence that if I and others like me had not password-protected our uploaded files, there would be far less available for download at VEF and far fewer uploaders posting good material than we have.

I've seen many of my uploads copied and pasted to other boards, forums, and blogs, and when many of the links at any one of those websites were reported and killed, my links died with them. The password-protected links with my user name as password get copied far less than those I posted without a password -- which I do mainly for vids ripped by others that I reuploaded.

File hosts are much more likely to check files that receive complaints when they can simply unpack and view them, than if they have to research the password in order to unpack and check them. Of course, many file hosts will simply remove any files that receive copyright complaints, but they also do random checks on uploaded files, and the password-protected files without obvious movie titles as file names are more likely to survive longer in my experience.

I've had my file host accounts hijacked, frozen or closed after spending hundreds of hours uploading to them, and I've seen dozens of prolific uploaders give up and stop posting after their accounts were lost in similar manner. Password protection is not a solution to the problem, but it offers a level of insurance that somewhat reduces the risks, and that is why after a dozen years and thousands of uploads, I still add a password to all my own rips.
