Yes.
I will not quibble over exact definitions, it's mostly personal perspective, but -
I did think about which term to use in my post. Since I wanted to say something good about them I picked the one that had the least negative connotation, to my mind.

They may be similar in definition, but in the US, for me, the word Democrat brings thoughts of John Kennedy, while the word Leftist brings images of Antifa. I see Leftists as being more left than a Democrat.

Further, to me a Democrat (demo means people) is more concerned with the welfare of people; a Republican is more concerned with the welfare of State. This may be totally wrong but is how I see it.

Your analogy of liberty vs parity is, I suppose, fairly close to how I see it.

Either side can go too far.

I see Europe as being too far left. The concern for people in general (if that's what is driving events there, some think it's something else) has somehow driven Europe to commit suicide by Islamic immigration and forget about national and cultural survival.
This is abhorrent and ridiculous to me; and I am thinking more and more there must be some kind of ulterior motive to it.
