There have been years and years of discussions about this on Italian and French sites (as you can imagine!): finding the film clip of a topless Sophia would be the holy grail of all holy grails.
The idea is that there were two versions shot – one for Italy (with the “harem girls” clothed) and one for France, with the girls topless. And the “legend” would have it that the film producer Carlo Ponti (who had his eye on, and later married Sophia) bought up all the copies (prints and negatives) of the French version and had them destroyed. The legend of a nude movie version starting cropping up 10 years after the movie was shot, in the 1960s (like the “Modern Man 1962 Yearbook of Queens” article posted here earlier and repeated, I believe, in an issue of Playboy).
But consensus opinion among European film historians – who interviewed camera operators and technicians who were involved with the production – is that the nude shots were posed “stills”, for distribution to French men’s magazines. A topless “film action” version was, according to historians, never shot.
