thames TV was saved from bankruptcy by Benny Hill, the reward, being dropped like a piece of used toilet paper because the bosses at ITV and BBC didnt have the balls to stand by their own talented artists. The damage was done, neither the tv companies or the comedians ever recovered and we now have to put up with the dross that passes for comedy. If the critics of Benny's work ever bothered to actually look at the context of the sketches particularly the ones involving scantily clad women they would soon realise that the ridicule was of the male character, the leering and pervy man always came off worse. Funny how people dont see the genuis until it is too late. Look at the greats from the 60's & 70's, Morecambe & Wise, Frankie Howerd, Benny Hill, Norman Wisdon, Max Wall, Dick Emery, Spike Milligan, etc. Where are the comparable comedians now, Lee Evans and Mike McIntyre are the only two that spring to mind. The nearest to Benny would be Leigh Francis with his Keith Lemon character
