In his early days, on BBC TV, Benny was inventive and innovative. Unfortunately after going to ITV in the late '60s, he seemed to repeat too many ideas, and became stale.
Whether it was because nobody would tell him that his time had passed, or if he couldn't change the show's format, I don't know, but I feel that he wasted an undoubted talent. Perhaps if he'd reinvented himself in the way Frankie Howerd managed, he would be more fondly remembered.
