The British Academy of Film and Television Awards is really no different to the Oscar's but they do tend to have more awards dedicated to past directors and other leading lights now sadly no more, such as Michael Balcon, Sir David Lean etc. The television awards are now separate but used to be part of the whole evening but it used to last so long it was thought better to have two separate awards evenings. The only major difference between the two is a BAFTA is a facial mask based on a design by Mizzi Cunliffe and an OSCAR is a statuette based on something that looked like someone's grandfather. If you win a BAFTA there is an odds on chance of winning an OSCAR but this doesn't always work out-see True Grit and The Social Network. Tom Hanks joked with BBC reporter Tim Muffett that "one day you will award a BAFTA to an American actor/actress" well they have won in the past but like Oscars, British actors/actresses don't always win them. It is interesting to note that the award is the same as the name of the organisation and yet Oscar isn't-the organisation is AMPTAS(Academy of Motion Picture. Television & Arts & Sciences) but you don't win an AMPTAS you win an Oscar.
