The Tower
Creepiest story I recall reading was of a man walking in a remote, unnamed European country. The Innkeeper where he was staying suggested a route for a walk, but warned him against entering a ruined tower which he would encounter on the route, as it was dangerously unsafe.
The man duly took the route and on a glorious summer afternoon encountered the tower. It was circular and clearly allowed spectacular views of the landscape from its top. He looked in the ruined doorway and saw a circular flight of steps going upwards. There were no windows so it was a bit gloomy, although the light from the opening at the top of the tower filtered down. It all looked peaceful and interesting and appeared to be a very sturdy structure.
Ignoring the advice, he started to climb the staircase, counting to himself as he went. At step 81 he reached the platform at the top and was rewarded by a fabulous panorama of the landscape around him and studied it for a long time. He was so engrossed in this he realised that the afternoon was waning and evening approaching. He wanted to watch the sunset - which was going to be spectacular - but decided not to in order to avoid having to get back to his Inn in the dark.
He descended the staircase, again counting as he went to break the monotony. 10. 11. 12...
It got darker as he descended but he could feel his way without difficulty, still counting. 41. 42. 43....
He began to feel hungry and wondered what he would have for dinner that night. The food at the Inn was first class and he ran the menu through his mind as he continued to descend, counting as he went.
