Page 3 Daily Review

Taking up an old hobby here, I used to many years ago write a weekly and then an annual review of Page 3’s in The Sun and the Daily Star for a website long since deceased and it was so long ago that I cannot even remember what it was!!

When I can, I am hoping to do this on a daily basis here and start from Monday 31st December 2012 and where possible include the images where they were available which in the case of the Daily Star can be a little hit and miss at times.

As other related items of interest appear in those papers (and maybe on occasion the Sport although getting hold of it in my area is very hit and miss, mostly miss!) then I shall add them as and when and hopefully conclude each week with an overall appraisal.

All opinions expressed are mine and mine alone and feel free to join the discussion.

Monday 31st December 2012

Concluding what has been a good year for The Sun, the printed paper had a stupendous landscape format knickerless shot of Rhian Sugden by the pool from the 2013 Calendar shoot.

Does rather render the irritating 'News in Brief's' a bit inapplicable since she isn't wearing any!!! :D

On the website however the Rhian images (shown above) were available initially but were then later replaced by three images of Danni Wells for reasons unknown and the Rhian images disappeared, not even to be found in the Archive. The three Danni pics (I believe seen before) are however included below for completeness.

The Daily Star produced a lovely well printed shot of Jessica from Aberystwyth who, in this shot at least, reminds me a little of Adele Stevens.

Firstly, Happy New Year to you all!! Kelly opens proceedings in the world of Page 3 for another year in The Sun with a typically unseasonal beach location shot.

Black mark for the Daily Star already!! Following their very disappointing Christmas Eve shot (boobs covered, mind you The Sun wasn’t much better that day with a weird red wig shot making for one of the most disappointing Christmas Eve’s for Page 3 for many a year) they went and did it again with three girls, Holly, Geena and Mel all with arms covering their assets. The printing quality of my copy was pretty poor as well and there was no online version to share either. :(

Wednesday 2nd January

Careless and avoidable mistakes abound for both papers today. The Sun printed a lovely shot of the wonderfully named Lacy Banghard lying on her back which took up the top two thirds of the page in the paper. What a pity therefore that the online version was cropped very badly.

They can put the correct size/ratio online, they were doing it with the welcome but it would seem sadly short lived larger size pictures in December but sadly the online versions have reverted to the smaller size with no allowance for wider shots. :(

For completeness, I have scanned the far superior printed version for comparison. It has all the usual clutter (calendar ad, News in Briefs) that you always get with the printed version but at least you can see the full picture:

The Daily Star gave us Emma from Reading. There errors were minor by comparison, the printed version had been flipped so that she was facing away from the page spine and the placing of her name caption was sloppy where it partially overlaid the top of her head.

Thursday 3rd January:

The Sun seems to have gone on a bit of a Hollie fest today, no complaints here!! :D In the paper and online we had her posing in a nice little black number with the featured shot being a classic sexy back to camera with sideboob and nicely displayed posterior!

There is also a video (undownloadable sadly :( ) of the photoshoot on the site. It was disappointing however (and somewhat baffling) to see that despite all this effort, the images presented are tiny, smaller even than the everyday Page 3 images. Why?!?

The Daily Star had another image that had been flipped for publication, Rosy O'Brien smiling broadly in a good pic but they really need to consider a more generous page layout as their Page 3 printed images are looking a little cramped nowadays.

Friday 4th January:

Closing a decent week in The Sun was Poppy in another from the seemingly endless supply of sunny location shoot pics which in quality terms still have the edge over the Daily Star's studio shots:

The Daily Star continued its usual form with a nicely composed studio shot of Nickie Hedger. Unfortunately there is no online version today, at least no link has appeared on the Daily Star Babes RSS feed so it was onto the scanner with today's picture from the paper:

Note: The previous two weeks daily reviews have been temporarily lost in the great database disaster that has struck the site. Hopefully these should reappear in due course so in the meantime I am going to carry on from here as normal.

Monday 21st January:

Lovely nice shot of Courtnie gets the week off to a good start. The printed version did suffer a little from overcropping and poor placement of that daily pointless annoyance the 'News in Brief's' bubble...

Also in today's Sun a rather strange treatement of the annual Page 3 Idol Winner's Story article. Across the centre pages, there was just the one tiny topless shot, this being of Melissa Clarke's original competition entry image. The only new topless shot from this set was relegated to a tiny advert image at the bottom of the main Page 3 pic.

Fortunately it was reproduced full size online but it strikes me as very odd to have a big centre page article about the new Page 3 Idol and have no topless pictures on it!!! :confused:

The Daily Star had a poolside shot of Emma today (although I am beginning to suspect that may just be a backdrop) which once again had been flipped for publication. Wouldn't it be simpler just to have the Star's photographer have all the girls pose facing the other way in the first place?

Tuesday 22nd January:

You had to dig a little deeper into your copy of The Sun today for today's picture, all the way to page seven in fact but the effort was worth it to discover a large landscape format shot of a bronzed reclining Hollie and - joy of joys - the online versions were large size as well:

Also on the Sun Page 3 site was a video of Melissa Clarke the new (and controversial?) Page 3 Idol which is of her first shooting session and contains a brief interview as well. Makes no mention whatsoever of her three or so years experience doing topless and nude modelling in lads mags etc, the evidence of which is on this very forum.

Unfortunately as per all Sun Page 3 videos, its undownloadable... :(

In the Daily Star we had Chloe Goodman in a picture that was the right way around for a change but the printed version suffered once again from some very tight cropping and sloppy presentation:

Friday 25th January:

The very rarely seen India made a once in a while appearance in The Sun today. Not impressed with the choice of picture, the one used had her with a very dour expression and the printed version was a bit cramped on the page as well, one of the other two from the set would have been a better choice:

New girl Sara from Barnsley made her debut in the Daily Star making two new girls in two days. Nice picture, online version again the one to go for with the printed one being flipped and cropped for publication:

Monday 28th January:

Slightly odd goings on with The Sun today. Online you had these three shots of former Page 3 Idol Lucy in some rather unfetching leopard print pants:

However the printed image in the paper was miles better, this large landscape format picture which, as no online version seems to be available, needed the warming up of the old scanner:

Would have been better without the 2013 Calendar advert - I think that can be dropped now as I am pretty certain anyone who wanted one has got one by now!!

The Daily Star notches up the third new girl in three days with 22 year old Emma from Guildford. Online version was the better one as usual:

I do wonder if it is coincidence that the Star is bringing in so many new girls at the same time The Sun ran their Idol competition, so far all of the new talent in the Star has outshone the Page 3 Idol 'winner' (who has still yet to make a proper Page 3 appearance) by a huge margin.

Making her first domestic Page 3 appearance since winning this years Page 3 Idol competiton is Melissa in a fairly plain studio shot with two further slightly different shots also available online.

Summer from Horsham is yet another of this years Page 3 Idol semi finalists who it turns out is already a Page 3 Girl for the Daily Star which makes at least three out of twelve now!!!

Nice picture and happy to see more of her in print even though the printed image, despite being a facing front pose was still flipped for publication. I am wondering how many of the other Semi Finalists are already on or about to appear on the pages of the Star.... :confused:

Bit of a disaster with the Daily Star today. The good news was that we had yet another new girl (that's four in a fortnight, more than The Sun manages in a whole year usually!) in the form of 21 year old Nicola from London:

For once we have a new Star girl who wasn't in this years Page 3 Idol competition (as far as I can tell) but what a pity her debut appearance was cocked up. The online version shown above had the very top of her head chopped off and the printed version had very hapahazard positioning of the caption box and name which overprinted her head. Sloppy...

The choice of picture printed was a bit odd as the other two from the set with her smiling were far better in my opinion. Also the placing of the fecking pointless News in Briefs box on the printed version didn't help either.

The Daily Star brought us Rachel McDonald with a nicely presented shot even if she was rather spilling out of the printed version!!! At least they didn't chop any arms or the top of her head off like the page layout guy has done on occasion in the past:

Wednesday 6th February:

NO PAGE 3 IN THE SUN :mad:

It was ditched in favour of some non topless nicked from FHM shot of someone who is desperate to boost her career. Unacceptable and pointless.

So it was down to the Daily Star to save the day which thankfully they did:

Rosy O'Brien was our one and only topless girl for today. The printed version had been flipped again and it did look a bit odd having Rosy's name rammed up her armpit but overall it was a decent picture and at least they bothered unlike The Sun...

Thursday 7th February:

Something seems to be wrong with The Sun, following yesterday's no show, today we have long since retired Katie Downes (always nice to see her of course!) in an old picture and there is no sign of any online version on the website, just blank spaces so the printed version gets the scanner treatment for the monent:

Monday 11th February:

We start the week off with the rumour that Rupert Murdoch has tweeted that Page 3 may be scrapped!! :( Unfortunately this was matched today with a quite frankly crap picture of Page 3 Idol Melissa Clarke on location somewhere looking throughly fed up and miserable. The other two online pics from the same set were marginally better but not by much:

Over in the Daily Star yet another Page 3 Idol competitor joins the Daily Star fold (this is bordering on the riddiculous now!!) however like the other four (and counting) we have had so far this is another good addition and is in fact the defeated finalist Jessica Kingham no less:

Just wish the printed pictures in the Star were allowed to be a bit bigger and better framed to do the justice to them that they deserve.

Thursday 14th February - Valentines Day!

So did Page 3 do something special for Valentines Day? Not so that you would have noticed no… :(

In The Sun someone must have realised what today was as Lucy got the job today posing on a beach and to add a rather dismal Valentine element, she had a heart scrawled in the sand in front of her which resulted in three rather nice online pics including two landscape format that were actually in the larger size:

What a pity therefore that the page layout muffin decided to crop the picture for the printed version leaving out the heart in the sand thereby giving the impression that this was just an ordinary Page 3 pic. :mad:

The Daily Star sort of made an effort but it most certainly wasn’t the Star’s best effort with Melissa Debling holding a single rose against a ghastly pink background and with a couple of computer generated hearts plonked on the top right hand corner (on the printed version anyway):

P3 definitely doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be, despite still having some great girls- it sometimes seems a bit as if they're just going through the motions. Those Valentine's Day pics today almost look as if someone suddenly remembered 'Oh we need a set for Valentine's Day' and just drew a quick heart on the sand for Lucy to pose with.
Sure, they're good pics, and Lucy is one of my favourite Page 3 girls of the present era, so I'm not complaining too much, but as you suggest, at times it really feels like there's not all that much thought going into them.

Friday 15th February:

NO PAGE 3 IN THE SUN :mad:
The appearance of some long forgotten model in a publicity pic on page eleven I think it was suggested that even if there had not been the big story splash their might not have been one anyway. HOWEVER online a trio of nice (but I suspect recycled seeing as their the older smaller format) pictures of Amii Grove did appear so for completeness here they are:

The Daily Star managed to have a Page 3 despite the big news story and it was on Page 3 as well. The lovely Summer (one time Page 3 Idol semi-finalist) in a pretty decent picture saved the day:

Monday 18th February:

Irony abounds in the Daily Star today. "PAGE 3 GIRL GUARANTEED EVERY DAY" it says across the front cover which is a pack of lies as they haven't printed a proper topless Page 3 on a Saturday or a Bank Holiday (nor Sundays for that matter) for the best part of ten years and The Sun is no better.

Anyway Laura-Jayne was todays's Page 3 girl of choice but no online picture appeared (as at time of writing) so will sort out a scan if I can later.

Wednesday 20th February:

NO PAGE 3 IN THE SUN :mad:

Instead we had some obscure fashion model instead. Is this the mooted 'fashinistas' replacement for Page 3 which Rupert Murdoch tweeted about a couple of weeks back? If it is I know what effect it has had, I have refused to buy it today and I suspect I won't be the only one.

There wasn't even any online alternatives, pathetic...

The Daily Star however managed to come to the rescue today with their 'Page 3 Girl Every Day' (just don't mention weekends and Bank Holidays) pledge bringing us a very nice picture of Sarah McDonald:

Thursday 21st February:

What a pity she has gone and got a new tattoo in a most inappropriate place though, under her left breast and visible in these shots. :( It is clearly new as it does not appear in today's Page 3 360 or her or any previous shots.

Also on the site was a new Lodge type shoot with Rosie Jones in a swimming pool. It is claimed this is from the current Barbados shoot but something looks familiar about some of these shots so I am not so convinced:

End of a busy month sees Amii in The Sun in a set of three fairly standard outdoor shoot pictures. Actually I thought the printed one was marginally better than the online one as the colour seemed to be better:

Jessica Kingham in the Daily Star again (she would never have got this much coverage if she had won Page 3 Idol ironically!) in a picture that was not one of her best. The printed version was a bit of a shambles, cropped lopsided with her left arm lopped off and her expression did little to enhance a rather poor effort here:
