The Football Thread

Hi there,

Having recently posted a thread asking: "Can England Win The World Cup?" ... I was interested in finding out whether a general football thread (for fans throughout the world) to exchange views on there supported teams would be a good idea?

If there are any "moderators" who think this would be a negative idea please inform me of the reasons for this if possible.

If there is already a 'football' thread on this forum I apologise to the thread starter and members who contribute to this thread.

I await your comments on this matter.

Thanks for your time.

England won't win 'cos they faff around too much. Passing back, forward, sideways, back, sideways, back, forward, sideways, sideways, back, sideways, forward, back, sideways, sideways, back, etc. ad infinitum.

And they're too big-headed 'cos every time they beat footballing nobodies (as in most of this qualifying campaign) the press says "England are the best in the world, alll they've got to do is turn up, blah blah blah" and the public believes it.

The truth is, England have only ever been an average side who on one occasion won something. The rest of the time they can't even get to the final of a cup. If they were more than average they would've beaten Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina etc. on more than one occasion in actual competition, not qualifying rounds. They nearly beat Argentina, but shearer elbowed their goalie in the gob and caused the goal they (saul campbell?) got disallowed, and caused the game to go to penalties. And we all know how flippin' sheeeet they are at them. They never blast them in the bottom corner, like I tell 'em.

Why can't the fans sing proper football songs like the those the players hear every week? Why can't the fans sing "Abide with Me" and get the FA cup atmosphere going instead of singing either one verse of 'rule britannia' repeatedely, or the flippin' national anthem? These 'songs' have nothing to do with football, really.

Whoops! ..... going to upset you now ............... I have always personally thought that Gerrard was 'over-rated'.

Cannot count on 2 hands the 'good' games he has had for England?

I think he is the 'best' of a 'bad' lot up at Anfield.

This part of the forum is called General Discussion & News.

Apologies. I don't know what came over me. I do not think England can win the World Cup given the present media in the country. (Naturally, I hope they do, but that is not the point.) The level of intrusion, comment and snooping around the team and coach is such that the national side has a weight of expectation upon it which simply cannot be met. The psychological strain is perhaps why so many gifted players crack up or under-perform.

A relative who lives in Germany told me this story. When the German television was summing up on Euro 90 (I recall from memory), they turned to 'Emperor' Franz Beckenbuer. Who did he think was 'the' player of the tournament? Without missing a beat the great man said "The Englishman, Gazza".

Paul Gascoigne was one of the most gifted players this country has ever produced and was completely, as in totally, destroyed psychologically by the media in England. He was pulled apart in a game of circulation battles he neither controlled nor understood. A great player (I never supported a single team he played for) was lost to his country because of the relentless search for 'stories' with which to beat the opposition (in Fleet Street) over the head. Perhaps he was his 'own worst enemy'; but why was he not cared for?

I dare say that comment is not 'welcome' either. Nor constructive. Back to the girls. Farewell, chaps!

Been a Football fan all my life, and supported Man United since the age of 6. I was Old Trafford with my Dad when Denis Law sent us down in 1974. Seen all the bad times, whih makes you appreciate and saviour any good times that come your way.

United have had nearly 20 great years, thanks to Sir Alex, however I fear that the time has come for someone else to enjoy success.

The Glazers are killing the club I love, they have plunged us into debt for the last few years and now the pot is empty. But its times like these that make you appreciate the good times.

Money and greed is destroying our game.

Damn, a City fan on the Forum:), good luck to you mate, Next season (if not this) I can see City winning the league. To be honest i would rather they win it than any of the other big 4.

Good to see Newcastle and Leeds doing well again, the premiership is a worse place without them.
