Questions For Our Canadian Friends

All right, fellow VEF users and all of my North American friends up in Canada, this thread will be courtesy of the guy who in 2012-13 was nicknamed "Captain Canada" for being polite, politically-conscious, well-spoken, but bland and easygoing compared to the other guys I worked with at the supercenter. I may be American, but I think my personality type is more Canadian.

There are many fine imports that come from The True North Strong And Free, like Nickelback and Annihilator, Tailor James and Pamela Anderson, hockey and beer for some examples that the guys at VEF might know about. I'm not a Nickelback fan, and my doctor is more of a hockey guy than me, but I know about the Playmates and the other bands better than Nickelback from Canada. Besides Annihilator, the acts Helix, Voivod, The Tragically Hip, and a few others come to mind. But I've never liked Alanis Morrissette, Celine Dion, or Propagandhi at all...

So to ask my Canadian friends a few polite and politically-conscious questions, I'd like to ask you about your experiences with Health Canada. In the United States, many liberal or left-leaning people think that the U.S. should move toward a Canadian-style health care system, with individual mandate and single-payer as core features. President Obama has already passed an individual mandate (with 60% of Americans opposing and 40% of Americans supporting) and we have had "single-payer"-style care for some people through Medicaid and Medicare since the 1960s. I am currently on Medicaid because I am between jobs, and my parents have Medicare now that they are retired, but you have to be either broke or uninsured to get Medicaid, and 65+ to get Medicaid.

Could any Canadians knowledgeable about your health care system, who may be reading this thread at VEF, tell me if Health Canada really just means that major medical expenses, surgeries at hospitals, and/or doctor checkups are covered? And I've also read that certain services like vision, dental, cosmetic surgery, and/or braces are not covered necessarily, and that you could have a private plan for these services rather than your government. I have been concerned about this issue since high school, when in 1994 Bill and Hillary Clinton were first proposing "national health care", and by 2004 I was hospitalized and first had to go on Medicaid to pay my specialist bills as an unemployed recent college graduate.

And while we're at it, can any of our Canadian friends list their top five Canadian rock/metal acts and their top five Canadian Playmates/pornstars?

Why on earth do they have a stadium where the sun can face a goal?

Do you really get that upset about missing out on a olympic ice skating gold medal?

My dad doesn't like motorsport ( I love it). One day he was watching a replay of the Canadian GP with me. He was so impressed by the Montreal scenery, that he considered taking a holiday there for the following year to celebrate his 60th birthday.

He died six months later.

(1), Canada is a Commonwealth country ( a part of the old British Empire), so why do you drive on the right? I know there are some non-Commonwealth countries that drive on the left (Japan, to name one). But with Canada's British connection why wouldn't she drive on the left?

(2), Did the CFL come into existence prior to the advent of the NFL?

One of the funniest ever radio comedies, Canadia 2056 was written by Matt Watts and broadcast on CBC radio.
It even starred this woman as a sexy computer voice.

(1) I'm not exactly sure, but I would surmise that it has to do with the proximity to the US. However, left-side driving was the norm in British Columbia and the Maritimes until the 1920's and in Newfoundland until 1947.

(2) The CFL came into existance officially in 1958. Canadian football had been played professionally in it's current form since the 1930's. Teams from the east and west would play amongst themselves then the champions of the east and west would play for the Grey Cup. Eastern and western teams had their own umbrella organizations and in 1956 they founded the Canadian Football Council. In 1958, the CFC withdrew from the Canadian Rugby Union, which was the overseer of all football in Canada and formed the CFL. Due to agreements with the CRU, the CFL took possession of the Grey Cup. The CRU became Football Canada and the governing body of Canadian amateur football.

Other Canadian acts besides Rush: the Guess Who, Triumph, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, April Wine, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Barenaked Ladies, the Tragically Hip

Canada's new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made sure that there is an equal number of men and women in his first cabinet. How is this going down amongst the Canadian public?

Questions for our Canadian friends

Not sure how Trudeau will do but 10 years of Stephen Harper was to long. He's talked about legalizing weed so lets hope he keeps his promises.I read somewhere he is going to put up a promise meter to moniter how many of his campaign promises are fulfiled.
