He became only the second black player to represent Great Britain at Rugby League and, incredibly for a man of almost no education, an academic in later life, working as head of economics at Chesterfiled Grammar School. A wonderful story that somebody (come on, Ken Loach) should make into a film one day.

A great man and a wonderful ambassador for rugby league. His biography 'Born On The Wrong Side' is an excellent read

I just wanted to say a big thankyou to all who have posted notices and obituaries here these last couple of months.
Having returned to VEF, after an unwanted break due to my lack of internet connection and several computer problems, it has been interesting catching up on what's been going on, but so sad to see so many well known, and loved, people, finding their way here in the RIP thread. The late Sir Henry Cooper, Anna Massey, and Robert Robinson to name just a couple.:(

All will be sadly missed!

Anyway, THANKYOU to all who have posted in the meantime.

Jack Layton Leader of the Official Opposition, Canadian Parliament. Passed away from cancer.

Under his leadership the New Democratic Party achieved Official Opposition status for the first time since its formation in 1961. Political life ran deep for Jack Layton. His mother, Doris Elizabeth Steeves, is a grand-niece of William Steeves, a Father of Confederation, and his father, Robert Layton, was a Progressive Conservative MP. His wife, Olivia Chow, is the MP for the riding of Trinity—Spadina.

Although I am not a supporter of the NDP platform, I did admire his leadership abilities and his commitment to his ideals.
