E.J. Peaker

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0668855/

E.J. Peaker was born 22 February 1944, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with the inimitably Okie name Edra Jean Peaker.
She's probably best remembered for playing Minnie Fay in the motion picture Hello, Dolly! (1969). E.J. also starred with Robert Morse in the cult musical series, "That's Life" (1968).

When I was a wee laddie at the end of the 60s, E.J. Peaker was a throwback to the peaches and cream girls next door of the 1940s. She did a lot of family-oriented sitcoms and variety shows during that turbulent period. She seemed almost anachronistic to me, even if I was too young to understand why. Her wholesome image couldn't last, and her time in the spotlight was brief.

Considering how I'd always thought of her as a kind of Disney girl, you can imagine my shock to learn 2 decades later (thanks to the Bare Facts Video Guide) that at the height of her wholesome career she'd done a nude scene!

I suppose she was trying to change her image. But the film (The All American Boy --an ironic title considerin E.J.'s All American image) was so bad -- it was released 3 years after it was shot -- it had no impact at all.

Will E.J. Peaker Inspire the Peak of Your Performance?

Circa 1970

I was watching the first season's "Just by Accident" episode of The Rockford Files from 1975, and this honey hummed her way in, in one scene:

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/74/99/geUynHeJ_t.jpg

As beautiful blondes go, not at the extreme end of the most gorgeous perhaps (that's what I thought while watching, anyway; she looks lovely in these photos), but she had that certain somethin'; who wuzzit?

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/0a/03/SmGnLiSx_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/cc/db/gskfYQ9f_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/0f/a3/wBzRAiRD_t.jpg

Later, I learned she was thirty-five here, which moved her up on the "beauty" scale, looking as wonderful as she did. First got her feet wet at twenty-four, but began screen show bizzyness in earnest at twenty-six, meaning she was a bit of a late-starter. (Now don't quote me on this, because I don't pretend to be an expert on Ms. Peaker's career, but it seems she made her mark on the stage first, exactly as a co-star of hers who will be coming up below, Robert Morse. Barefoot in the Park was her last Broadway role, in 1963.) For her to have climbed up the Hollywood ladder in a short period to become a fairly well-known entity at the time was much to the lady's credit.

For God's sake! I had the vaguest memory of E.J. Peaker, whose persona was one of peaches and cream. Blocked! Member Nick Danger described her to a tee in the opening post of this thread from 2009 that you will see above. (Yup, obviously E.J. hasn't tickled the fancy of too many VEF'ers, judging by how mine is only the sixth post in eighteen years.)

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/10/14/jS6d3ECe_t.jpg
At a party for the cast of Dark Shadows
in 1968; that's Barnabas, or Jonathan Frid,

.

Allow me to present a a few of her other appearances, to round out E.J. to some extent:

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/eb/32/1DtCyGTT_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/53/a1/BLqiwApj_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/72/23/1e5JLvfg_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/b6/fa/IsCgJa2A_t.jpg
Her THAT'S LIFE co-star was Robert Morse. In the third photo, I see William Forsythe made a guest appearance. Hold on, that was also Morse,
just looking a little too much like the tough guy actor (final shot).

After landing parts in popular TV shows such as Route 66, That Girl and The Flying Nun, the first sign of her having it made was being cast for the leading lady part of That's Life (1968-69), partly a musical; Member "Johnbear" presented a good assortment of pictures from what appears to be "Getty Images" in Post #5 from 2020 that you see above. E.J. was in all twenty-six episodes. The first photo from my batch displays the lady in a very prototypical type of Peakerishness, exhibiting her "Cutesy-Pie" quality in an unabashed manner (at least at this beginning phase of her career).

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/9d/55/KoVqxbBE_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/2e/0e/52KydPTu_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/13/5b/qvAkwfux_t.jpg

That first photo above has also captured the Peaker essence to an unusual extent. These shots are from the 1969 TV film Three's A Crowd, where bigamist Larry Hagman balances two wives from two different cities (other being the late Jessica Walters; now we know why she acted insane two years later, in Play Misty For Me).

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/13/d8/cTNBIx30_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/e8/84/tkLSN6mD_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/66/8c/D8CULfZX_t.jpg

From the movie, displaying her fine form on the tennis court as may be seen in the first two shots, and shamefully limiting her cleavage in the last, where Rosemary Eliot and Michael Lerner are also making merry. (Notice how effective character actor Lerner was young, once.)

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/ba/f3/s8fvuuoN_t.jpg

Gary Collins was her better half in Getting Away from It All (1972), a comedy TV movie where the couple and their best friends, another affluent couple (Larry Hagman again, and Barbara Feldon) do their Green Acres bit and move to the country for the simple life. Naturally, they can't cope with the challenges that come their way. This was exactly the kind fluffy and innocent vehicle that had epitomized the actress, which is perhaps why she attempted something different in the next year, with a rare feature film appearance, talk for which will cap off this post.

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/09/be/ayHhM8KX_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/7c/23/J0IpX2ik_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/de/44/9sJvzFKR_t.jpg
In WONDER WOMAN's "Screaming Javelins," Henry Gibson (pictured in second photo, with Melanie Chartoff and Robert
Sampson) played a campy "Batman" style villain who kidnaps an Olympic team to play for his country. Our lady looks simply
outstanding in the last photo. If you're asking what the first shot of Lynda Carter is doing here, this was an absolutely
sensational view for her and I couldn't resist. (Sorry.)

Looking at E.J. Peaker's filmography, the next few years offered more dramatic roles, indicating her possible attempt to go for a different image. She largely stopped appearing in game shows and talk shows by the early seventies, maybe in an attempt to be taken more seriously as an actress. (For example, her no-nonsense role in The Rockford Files in 1975.) Naturally, the non-serious roles also were not going to be turned away completely; in 1978, the TV show Wonder Woman was graced by her presence.

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/c0/64/F1GZMhKr_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/71/65/pTew4nKW_t.jpg https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/f3/60/NLgARQQA_t.jpg
Displaying her lovely form at age forty-one, with actor William Katt in THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO's "Reseda Rose" episode.

In 1978, E.J. played second fiddle to a pre-HALLOWEEN Jamie Lee Curtis in an episode of Charlie's Angels, where both are upstart vs. veteran tournament golfers, and E.J. is one of the suspects when someone is trying to hurt Jamie. Ms. Peaker waited two years for her next screen appearance, in 1981's The Greatest American Hero; the episode's title is named after her character (who gets kidnapped, paving the way for Soviet evil), indicating no second fiddle role for her, here; she had the spotlight.

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/71/01/7xLvHtsv_t.jpg

By the beginning of the 1990's, the actress limited her output; as a dramatic example, she stopped for seven years. E. J. Peaker's very last screen role, at the age of sixty-one, was in Surviving Gilligan's Island: The Incredibly True Story of the Longest Three Hour Tour in History. This was an unusual production, where scenes with the surviving cast members were balanced with re-enactments, featuring other actors. E.J. appears to have been well cast as Mrs. Howell.

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/fb/d7/SsQvekvw_t.jpg
This photo's date is unknown.
E.J. is eighty-three-years-old this year.

In 1993, she branched out to behind-the-scenes with one project, serving as a producer for a television movie. In her private life, she was involved in helping the homeless, forming a group in 1986 for the outcasts of her Californian city. Above, seen later in life, in an event described as a "Special Showing of the Playground to Benefit Homeless and Runaway Los Angeles Youth."

Nick Danger was so taken aback by the lady's unexpected nudity (and who could blame him? The purer an actress's image, the kinkier when they shed the clothing), he went all-out with a million frame grabs from The All American Boy (please see the first two posts at the top of this page), one of E. J.'s extremely rare feature film appearances. (Her next full-fledged motion picture would be 1981's slasher horror film, Graduation Day, where she is seen below in a scene with actor Michael Pataki: )

https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/90/8a/N6bPslkW_t.jpg
High school principal Pataki makes a move on his secretary,
whose name in GRADUATION DAY is actually "Blondie." E.J.
seems to have been bereft of an ego, to accept such a part.
The film also featured Linnea Quigley (who takes it off, bless
her), and Vanna White (who doesn't).

Since our Blocked! fellow member covered every single base of The All-American Boy (1973), where Jon Voight played a restless soul who hopes to be a boxer while having no trouble getting girls (Anne Archer had an early role, here), it seems almost redundant to offer more views. Yet I had to:

It was absolutely generous of the lady to not cop out with peek-a-boo views, but to be willing to display the goods in a clear
fashion, not just with the front, but also the back. Never mind the homeless; this was E.J. Peaker's real service to humanity.
