Porn sites accessed from the UK will require age verification

People in the UK will have to prove they are 18 before being allowed to access pornography websites from next year, the government is to announce.

Websites will be legally required to install age verification controls by April 2018 as part of a move to make the internet safer for children.

Users may be asked to provide credit card details, as gambling websites do.

Companies breaking the rules set out in the Digital Economy Act face being blocked by their internet provider.

Under the plans, firms supplying payment and other services to the pornography websites could be notified about any breach.

A regulatory body will be asked to oversee and enforce the new rules.

It is thought this could be the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) which already sets age limits for films.

Well it looks like I quit porn just in time then

Have the VEF team made any plans regarding age verification and how to comply with the new regulations?

Most of the old wankers can be carbon dated.

That would be a problem for the site owners I guess, but as far as I know I don't think so, not a mod problem so I can't answer.

A bit late in the game for this, however I've always wondered why there isn't something to prevent kids being bombarded by pr0n (beyond parental controls).

Not to say that any enterprising 14-yr old couldn't snag Mum's CC number.

It'll take an archeologist to work out the age of most of the Vets

bowlinggreen July 18th, 2017 11:27 PM

Will this apply only to pay sites, our sites like ours as well?

If I give any CC info to VEF I am worried there will be a giant bill for strippers and single malt on it the next month.

:D

Seriously though, I would think that giving an actual ID might pose a problem, since those of us who share stuff would be wide open to lawsuits. No email tracing or other tech hijinks necessary to ID a poster, just take the ID, match it with the poster, and send out the summons papers.

Not a good plan. :(

As far as I understand its for any site hosting porn. So forums, blogs, pay sites and tube sites will all need to bring in the age verification system. If they don't they will find themselves on the blocked list alongside the torrent sites and such like. I suspect though even if they do block them people will still bypass the blocks in the same ways they do now. So it will ultimately be a completely useless idea that costs millions to implement. All its basically about is giving jobs to their mates as usual.

They don't really care about children watching porn but if they ignore it they know it means lost votes. So its easier to bring crap in like this and look like they are doing something. God forbid that parents actually do their fucking job and be responsible parents. No they want the Govt to do their job so they can sit around doing sod all and then blaming everyone else when their kids screw up.

To put this type of block in perpsective

If a site doesnt comply its only going to be blocked at the UK ISP level
Thats a world away from true adult verification like the old cyberage etc which required a credit card and couldnt be bypassed.

I wouldnt think there would be too many sites on Uk servers
Most adult sites / businesses with any sense moved to Europe eons ago

Sites with servers based outside the Uk arent likely to comply so get used to using a proxy
or vpn or other to bypass the block

The new regulator will tell internet service providers to block sites that do not take steps to prevent under-18s accessing pornography.

Anyone can bypass that block with a proxy - only downside in my experience is download managers dont seem to work with proxys

I'd seriously doubt that would ever occur

People have been signing up with credit cards to filehosts for 10+ years
The FBI had the entire megaupload membership details at its disposal
= O uploaders in court

Some may have received threatening emails/letters from lawyers
fishing for a quick cash settlement through scare tactics
(those that wouldnt want their reputation tarnished

If an ACCUSING LETTER from ISP, LAWYER or COPYRIGHT HOLDER is received

but in the main the one rule that rings true is

Dont use torrents and the likeyhood of ending up in court is next to 0 because of the likelyhood
we wont be able to pay the type of money their looking to make.

So they target the sharing platforms/hosts mostly
