Pan's People Babes
The gorgeous girls who would strut their funky stuff to the music when the artist was unavailable for a personal appearance in the studio.

Pan's People Babes
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...NGTONENEN2.jpg
Rosie Hetherington (Legs and Co ) Lets make this a thread, not just for "Pans People" but for any female dance troupe that danced to pop records on TV...ie "Legs and Co..." Hot Gossip, even "the Young Generation..." if anyone's got any pics ! Lets face it, any girl who can dance up on stage , in front of an audience , has got to be a bit special. They have usually been training for years to be able to do what they do, up there on stage, or in the TV studios. They deserve all the fame and success that comes their way. Pan's People were a British TV dance troupe who became a feature of the pop show........." Top of the Pops." http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...4cdfdfgdfg.jpg In an era before pop videos, they danced to songs when the artists were not available to perform them live. They were not the first dance troupe to appear regularly on TOTP - they were preceded by The Go-Jo's in the programme's early days, before Pan's People replaced them in May 1968. The original Pan's People line-up consisted of: Louise Clarke Felicity "Flick" Colby Barbara "Babs" Lord Ruth Pearson Andrea "Andi" Rutherford Patricia "Dee Dee" Wilde http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...LE/th_88e2.jpg Babs Lord ( Pans People ) At the end of 1972, Andi Rutherford left Pan's People to raise a family, and was replaced by Cherry Gillespie. In a 1976 edition of Top Of The Pops, Blue Peter presenter Lesley Judd (a former member of dance troupe The Young Generation) became a sixth Pan's Peoplette for a one-off routine. The backstage rehearsals were then shown on Blue Peter a few weeks later. Eventually...in October 1976 the dance group " Legs and Co " got the gig at Top of the Pops http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u..._LEGSANDCO.jpg Lulu Cartwright Gillian Clarke Patti Hammond Rosie Hetherington Susan Menhenick Pauline Peters Rosie was a student at the Italia Conti stage school, and Pauline, the first black female dancer to appear as a member of a dance troupe on Top of the Pops, had appeared on stage in various West End productions. http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...NGTONENEN1.jpghttp://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...INGTONENEN.jpg Rosie Hetherington ( Legs and Co ) Although Pan's People are more fondly remembered by past TOTP viewers, the original Legs & Co. line-up stayed together longer than any of the various Pan's People line-ups. Legs and Co made their first appearance on 21 October 1976, dancing to the Average White Band's "Queen of My Soul". Hot Gossip Hot Gossip were a British dance troupe most notable for their appearance on the TV series The Kenny Everett Video Show, which aired on ITV in 1978. Their overtly sexual dance routines were taking things to a new level on TV .......and all before the 9 o clock watershed ! It was created and choreographed by Arlene Phillips. The sexually suggestive dance routines, moves, gestures and costumes used by the troupe were considered very risqué, especially considering the early evening timeslot. Hot Gossip are often keen to claim that these risqué dance routines were not simply a result of the television programme and that they performed such dances since they were formed, four years before The Kenny Everett Video Show first aired. http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...PEIEEIEI10.jpghttp://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...IPEIEEIEI9.jpghttp://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...IPEIEEIEI8.jpghttp://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...IPEIEEIEI7.jpg Hot Gossip also made a couple of pop records, featuring a "Sarah Brightman" on lead vocal. They scored a hit with....." I Lost My Heart To a Starship Trooper," a lightweight disco track that cashed in on the media hype surrounding the original Star Wars film. They went on to record an album in the early 1980s................ "Geisha Boys and Temple Girls ........... The album was a commercial failure. Dancers who performed with Hot Gossip at one time or another before they disbanded in 1986 include Heather Alexander, Debbie Ash, Debbie Astell, Bunty Bailey, Bonnie Bryg, Richard Bodkin, Lindsay Cole, Titian Deakin, Lorraine Doyle, Annie Dunkley, Penni Dunlop, , Donna Fielding, Carol Fletcher, Debbie Fox, Judey Ford, Donette Goddard, Nicky Hinkley, Laura James, Richard Lloyd King, Sarah Miles, Sinitta Renet, Lyndsey Ward, http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...EIEEIEI6-1.jpghttp://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...IPEIEEIEI6.jpghttp://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...IPEIEEIEI3.jpghttp://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...IPEIEEIEI2.jpghttp://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...IPEIEEIEI1.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...SIPEIEEIEI.jpg Carol Fletcher ( right ) |

If it was Pans People v Legs & Co - Legs & Co everytime!
(Everyone outside of UK now totally confused!) |
Lulu Cartwright from Legs and Co was the greatest. Even when I was too young to appreciate girls properly I appreciated her! Started off c1976 very cutie-pie with a kind of 20s hairdo, but became raunchier later. Also I think appeared on the cover of Mayfair but not alas inside.
|
Sorry to disagree. Sue Mehenick was THE best. She joined Pans People, albeit at the end, was a member of Ruby Flipper, the bit between the two legends, and reappeared in Legs & Co staying to the very end. She still looks fantastic today.
Mention also for Donna Fielding from Hot Gossip. God did I fancy her. Then she went off with David Essex who messed her about a bit. Just the thought of Sue and Donna together. Colds shower time! |
Little poser for you all - was it this lot or Legs & Co that did a sexy piece to Diana Ross's 'I'm coming out'?
|
Legs and Co. As this was hit in the early 80s Pans People were long retired by then

Hot Gossip
The fab Donna Fielding (with the rest of the Gossipers) in the schoolgirl outfit she wore for Walk On The Wild Side.
|
Pans People
If you have a good HD Television and you are that way inclined, on just a few of the sets if you look very closely you will see the Blonde(Babs) loose her costume slightly and her right Tit flops out..the song is Gilbert O,Sullivan ,s Get Down-the one with the Dogs. Some of the girls took to wearing no Bras in some of the later sets particulely Ruth.
|
Sue Menhenick was my fave...

wAS Sue in Pans People
Ruby Flippin eck AND Legs and Co ? if so, she must have done the longest stint of all dancing on TV ( in hi heels too !! ) |
Vol 13 No 8 of Mayfair (1978) featured Lulu Cartwrights lovely bottom on the cover, but alas no more inside.
|
Great thread. What we all used to stay in and watch TOTPs for on Thursday evenings.
Louise Clarke always did it for me, followed by Cherie Gillespie. Mind you they were all pretty good. |
I don't know if it was Pans People or Legs and Co, I think it was about 1977 or 1978, and they where dancing to All Right Now by Free, still have not figured out when they where dressed as St Trinian’s schoolgirls, but the common room at the college I was at was packed ever day for a week,
|
What about the female dance troupe on the Les Dawson Show back in the 1970's?
They always seemed to wear less clothing (!!!) than either Pan's People or any of the other groups mentioned here, and, from memory, their dance routines were much raunchier. Anyone have any info on them or video clips? |
you mean the Roly Polys ?

Surprised there's been no mention on this thread so far of Hill's Angels, especially as must beat all the others for the amount of flesh shown, including as they did top Page 3 girl Corrine Russell, who not only appeared topless on the show but like several other girls who worked with Benny Hill was also happy to bare all for men's magazines.
See http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t11...ll--babes.html |
But lovegod, you yourself said in your opening post on page 1 "Lets make this a thread, not just for "Pans People" but for any female dance troupe that danced to pop records on TV...ie "Legs and Co..." Hot Gossip, even "the Young Generation..." ;)
But please - not the Roly Polys... :D |
Don't know who the Roly Polys were (Were they awful?) but do remember seeing several Les Dawson shows where he had a scantily clad dance troupe that were better than Pans People or Hot Gossip.
Anuone else remember them? |
BUT there is a seperate "Benny Hill Babes" thread, there's no seperate thread for Legs and co or the Young generation
where are the modern day equivalent of all these dance groups ? they seem to have died out ( along with variety shows ) (maybe its political correctness gone mad ? ) |

As lovegod says, the days of the sexy TV dance group seem to be over, whether for 'political correctness' or some other reason. |
HOT GOSSIP
I was involved in the unofficial HOT GOSSIP fan club some years ago, and saw them loads of times live in Leicester, I will dig out some shots I took of them on stage, have some VERY interesting ones of Donna Fielding in the Gymslip.
In the meantime here is a very good scan from a Kenny Everett annual. Lorraine Whitmarsh, whom I have met, nice girl, Carol Fletcher, also very sweet, and of course, looking very dangerous, Donna Fielding, in that same outfit she wore on the dance clip that is very elusive to find. This scan was a center spread in the book, so it was scanned in two parts by myself, and then joined, as the spline of the annual was hiding some of the pic, it was a nightmare to get it looking correct, so after much faffing about in Paintshop Pro 12, here it is, for the tech heads full size of the original scan(targa file) is -1563X2282 pixels. (I resized it to 1024) Its a blistering shot -enjoy. http://img20.imagevenue.com/loc893/t..._123_893lo.jpg |
Met all of them - Donna F was very quiet but Carol F was a great girl, full of life and very cute.
|
Donna F was the most popular one in the UK Fan Club, most requested for pics and info, I have a set of rare shots of her in the School Outfit I took at a nightclub in the 80's, they will appear on this forum, they are old 35mm shots and I am currently editing them, as the nightclubs disco lights shafted my lens filter and made the colours wrong so....one is finished and in now....

I loved Legs & Co :D Here is a performance from them that caused controversy at the time on account of the skimpy outfits the girls wore, which apparently showed off a bit more than they were meant to. According to some hysterical story in The Sun, you could see Pauline Peters' muff  Must our 70s pop kids be exposed to such lurid filth? Yes, in a word :p

I remember Pans people dancing to "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" by Genesis. The costumes were out of all my fantasys. I have not been able to find any video, sorry.
|
Legs & Co,
Jimmy Savile had to be given artificial respiration after this performance (probably): http://thumbnails14.imagebam.com/314...3731441176.gifhttp://thumbnails14.imagebam.com/314...3d31441178.gifhttp://thumbnails15.imagebam.com/314...eb31441179.gif |
A teensy digression for you. I'm working my way through my Simon & Garfunkel CDs, and having reached the magnificent Bridge Over Troubled Water, I recall Flick Colby dancing alone for 6 weeks when the single of the same name was Number 1 in the UK. She wore one of those diaphanous dancing outfits I think - and not sure now, whether the rest of the troupe joined her for the final stages? Too much bottled beer I guess. Beautiful stuff all round.

Pans People
Only got this one photo; there must be more from the same shoot you would have thought!
Enjoy anyhoo.:) http://img242.imagevenue.com/loc194/..._123_194lo.jpg |
