Ensure you extract/unrar/unzip the tool to a folder, open the folder and the jar file is in there :)

I just get this

https://t9.pixhost.to/thumbs/665/41406125_capturev.jpg

Probably best for us not to waste any more time on this, due to my pitiful computer skills, hey when I was at school we used slide rules :D

Ah, the issue you have is your JAR files are associated with WinRAR.

Try right clicking the archive (vef-imagerescue-1.10), click "open with", then look for something called "Java(TM) Platform SE binary", you may need to scroll down a list of programs that can open the file.

:)

Tried that, but if it worked, I have no idea where it is

Thanks for all your efforts but like rotobott my computer know-how is very basic and to be honest looking at most of the technical posts here I think I have an idea how dyslexic people see things :o:o

I'll carry on using Firefox and imagegrabber to grab posts in small chunks as it is an easier tool for even someone like me to get a handle on

For those who are using halvar's tool (1.12): I find it often gets "stuck" on a particular image/post. One can stop & re-start the tool, but often what I find can help to "clear" the "blockage" is manually visiting the post & opening the troublesome image in one's browser. If one then restarts halvar's tool on that thread the "sticky" image can often now be successfully downloaded.:)

That is: these images are generally not simply dead, merely "troublesome".:(

I suspect these are just symptoms of the general "flakiness" of image host sites.

vef-imagerescue 1.13 is available

get it from here: https://1fichier.com/?5belt3at06

Changes since 1.12
  • thumbnails are downloaded if the download of the image fails. The thumbnail is named 'thumb_.NNNNNN', where NNNNN is the last part (identifier) of the image page URL. In these cases the real filename is not available.
  • ImageBam puts links to amazonws on images pages where the image is not available. Links to amazonws are now skipped and the thumbnail is downloaded (see previous item)

Cheers. Outstanding again. Another query though... Sorry :o

When is the thumbnail downloaded when the image fails, after the first attempt or the retry?

I'm assuming the first failed attempt as a thread is being processed now and it has downloaded thumbs before the end of the first pass. Will this mean the retry won't happen as the thumb was downloaded OR will it still retry it and grab the image on the retry if possible?

EDIT: I assume that because the . file still is 0 it will try to download the image again, sorry if I'm being a spanner :D

Relatively minor but unfortunate issue: halvar's tool (1.13) for imgbox images, seems to (at least sometimes?) not get/use the image filenames? Example post here.

In the scheme of things, the best thing is we know which post and thread it comes from :)
