Photo shoots inside were really tame back then .

Yeah, it really shows how the world has changed- back then I reckon the usual progression for a teenage lad in acquiring wanking material was the underwear section in his mum's Kays catalogue, Page 3, Custom Car/Superbike/Amateur Photographer etc. (I had the odd copy of that as well) until that first 'proper' top-shelf mag, usually swapped with a mate at school until he could pluck up the courage to reach for the top shelf- Now it's straight on the net to find the kind of porn we didn't even know existed back then...:D

The other thing that amazes me now is that mags like Custom Car could actually feature women with their tits out on the cover- not even the top shelf is allowed to do that now (when did that change- early 80s?). Also, the fact that not only, as I said before, my local newsie happily sold them to me, but my mum didn't worry about me having a stash of them either!

Here's one cover that definitely had me spending my pocket money on the mag- The car is Nick Butler's 'Revenge', one of the iconic cars of the 70's/80's British hot rod scene, although I can't remember who the girl is. Actually, at the time I bought that one, I was about 12, and it was probably still the car that first caught my attention (I so wanted to own that car in my teens- It still exists, in Spain, and I probably still couldn't afford it!)- I was only just starting to take an really serious interest in naked women at that age...:D

Quite coincidentally, VEF member jefflynne has started posting scans from 70's Custom Car mags this morning, which should bring back some memories- although he's started at 1973, which is a bit before my time with CC

the nude model in custom car really took off with nicola austin who made a few appearances in 1974.
heres a couple of retro cool covers of her here .
sales must have started to go thru the roof i would guess.
the one with the escort race car gets mentioned in the tv show fords dagenham dream which is repeated often on bbc4.
the race team got quite a rollicking from fords top brass for it .

lets face it your eyes would be on sticks as a 14 year old and too young too reach the top shelf but easily reached on the mid shelf with those covers in front of you .
and thats what me and a few school chums were doing with custom car and superbike 5 or six years after these

I've just seen this mag on eBay, btw. It's out of my collection zone and I have spent a fair bit recently on mags, but I am seriously tempted.

The Sian Adey Jones set is well worth a good tug too !

Really enjoyed reading this thread over the last couple of days,and recognise a fair few covers from my own decent sized stash.
Jenkinson's story of hiding his latest purchase down the front of his trousers struck a chord with me - I remember doing similar on trips in to town with my mum,where I knew a particular little newsagents was quite happy to serve 15 year old me without any questions.I used to have a long,baggy trench coat to go with my winklepickers and big hair (very alternative!) and it was simply a case of putting on a pair of combat trousers with the big side pockets and I could roll up mags tightly and get one in each side which would then be covered by the huge coat.
More than once I remember walking round Sainsbury's helping my mum while having two mags under that coat!
Anyway,this particular mag would have probably been brought home like that.
I can't really put my finger on why I love it so much,but it might be because it almost seems a bit "innocent" - hiding the naughtiness inside,and it is a great issue.
You could imagine the photo being used on the front of a Sportswear catalogue or something.The girl is lovely and her bum looks fantastic in that outfit,but she's not inside and embarrassingly I don't know who she is:o
