.rar files and mp4 playback... help !

Hey everyone, I’m sure this isn’t a new subject but I had to start somewhere being that I’m fairly new to this site. I’m having trouble with opening .rar files and then playing back the mp4.
I used Winrar to extract the files, and tried to play the mp4 files on VLC Player on my PC. I end up getting multiple error messages. Previously I’ve used torrents and file converters to playback music or video files so I’m not completely in the dark about these things but I can’t figure this out. It’s definitely over my head. If anyone out there could help out I’d certainly appreciate it !
Could it be a codec problem ? Maybe my PC is too old ? No idea...

Probably a codec, download and install MPC (Media Player Classic) he has all the necessary codecs. I use it for 10 years..
Hope it will work.

The player problem was solved quickly and easily. As for unarchiving rar files, Total Commander (from Ghisler.com, a superb, swiss army knife, file management utility) and 7-Zip (from 7-Zip.org) will do the job. Both are Windows apps. There is also a p7Zip command line utility for linux; it can be had at the 7-Zip.org website. Whether or not you need either of these apps for your current use, they're great tools to have on hand.
