Gallows humour

''Yes indeed we must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang seperately.''

Benjamin Franklin July 3rd 1776, spoken to John Hancock as they both signed the declaration of independence. NB the Declaration was published on July 4th, which is why the Fourth of July, and not the Third, is American Independence Day.

Mr Franklin was joking but also deadly serious. The British hanged Paul Revere and a number of others: they also threatened to implement the full sentence of hanging, drawing and quartering, but this was never done. But once the Americans had captured British soldiers in battle, the British backed off because any fool could see how easy and obvious it would be for the Americans to respond in kind. But if America had lost the war, the signatories of the Declaration would have been hanged at best, and very possibly disembowelled while still alive, then cut into four quarters.

It took real balls to sign the Declaration, knowing that.

Footnote: factual correction. Paul Revere survived the war and died of natural causes many years later. But other were executed as traitors, including the Revolutionary spy, Nathan Hale, caught scouting for Washington by General Howe's men in 1776.

"Thomas Jefferson still lives." - John Adams' famous last words.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, 2nd and 3rd president of the US, both died on July 4th 1826, exactly 50 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Jefferson had died a few hours ago (of which Adams was of course unaware). So Adams was wrong for the moment, but right for the ages.
