Not sure who did it, but it appears to refer to this 1985 video

Perhaps they are trying to promote downloads for their cash-host account.

This was a method talked about on the planet from memory to combat lazy people stealing links and reposting as their own on other forums.

If your links are sprayed about online the chances of a DMCA take down increase significantly

Any caps that showed up with another forums address on it usually got removed swiftly

It was the only method that worked most of the time on active forums

Cloned versions of VEF another story entirely

so many people don't get that even when i've posted stuff on what i know to be or thought to be private forums links seem to take on a life of their own. The other thing is the number of downloads alone is often enough to get the links blocked by the file host long before a take down. Put something on the likes of dropbox, google drive, one drive and a few others and when the links get pummelled by freeloaders they'll get blocked.

Plenty of blogs / sites are set-up and filled with anything they can find easily
Plenty of VEF scans doing the rounds on umpteen blogs

Some think small and copy links

Others copy entire forums to a personal server and create another website name

The purpose is nearly always the same - lure traffic to generate revenue from advertising

Bottom line seemed to be that as much as it might have worked it annoyed serious collectors to the point where the purpose of sharing became almost null & void.

A bit like the old giffer collection which changed all the image descriptions
making it unwanted by avid collectors who wanted the originals completely intact.

The difference in volume between what i share now and two years ago is staggering for that reason alone. I got to a point where everything (not an understatement) I uploaded was downloaded one day and re-upped by the same person to file factory to make money the day after despite endless requests not to. In the case of one concert recording intended for my private forum and a private forum of the band it was literally plastered across the internet within 36 hours. I get really wound up by it even though i know there is nothing i can do to stop it with the exception of stopping uploading completely.
