The likes of TORRENT FREAK in recent months have been posting articles that would have saved a few people from signing up or renewing to a host that was being targetted

Equal number 1 would be your own ISPs FORUM - the USERS there will be the ones that should be able to give you relevant feedback as to how good a host really is IN YOUR REGION

Number 2 is the filehosts own News bulletins / forum

This one is more if your totally locked out of a filehost

Last but not least the filehosts FAQs / terms and Conditions - READ THEM

As there is WAR going on which goes beyond the FBI takedown of MU
all filehosts are potential targets.

Putting all your content into one host is risky regardless of how good any one host is.

Making sure they have the ability to REMOTE UPLOAD to another host a very important feature
as this means you can avoid having to completely re-upload anew everything lost if you catch it in time.

Filehost Advice & Solutions after major host takedowns.

I signed up to FileSonics service for a month just hours before they ceased to share files on Sunday

Because i used PayPal, I have just registered a dispute through them :thumbsup:

Go to PayPals' 'Resolution Centre' where you will find a dispute form, Give reasons similar to those I have described here ;)
Quote the sale of goods act 1979 and that the contract has fallen short of being:
1. as described
2. of satisfactory quality
3. or fit for the purpose it was intended
http://thumbnails22.imagebam.com/171...e171645590.jpg
then this page appears, It says the seller is unable to respond it now goes to an 'Escalate to a claim' form.
Select your reason from the pull down menu and let them deal with it http://thumbnails27.imagebam.com/171...8171645600.jpg

http://thumbnails44.imagebam.com/171...e171645604.jpg

;) see what happens next, I'll post to this thread if I hear anything

Brilliant advice NIN , used your great wording and good points from the sale of goods act 1979, now I too have just had a paypal refund for 2 months of prem access to filesonic. Very surprised it went through so quickly and hassle free. Hopefully everyone else that had subs left can get refunds as easily.

I must say, I did know that Filesonic was not prefered as a host due to some difficulties downloading (or major hassles, depending where you are based), but i never realised just how vehemently most detested it.
I actually found download speeds quite good, but only if you had prem access. Sure i too had some errors too, but in the whole it worked ok for me. I never knew the extent that people could not use links, or how detested it was on mass.

I am generally new to uploading files, and 'just went along' with what seemed to be the most popular host i saw used here on VEF when i joined. This was Filesonic at the time, and having seen a banner endorsing it on this very forum, I signed up.
I have no agenda to make any money from links at all, and have found the dicussion and debate a real eye opener into the use and to the extent that many Filesonic uploaders went to create a return.
At first i had no idea what affiliation account means, and still dont really. Literally the few cents for downloads these 'earned' for which i have declined to accept (by returning via paypal) is really not a method worth being used to make any money from for most of us, and nor would I want to.
I simply used it as I found it an ok download / upload speed host, and didn't have to many issues with use. I knew how long I had unlimited access until, and that was it.

I used to use RS, but i just don't understand there premuim purchasing system, with rapids, rapid pro, access until this date or usage limits etc. It too is a great speed for premium and free users, but couldnt get my head round how it worked.

I too have noticed the massive increase in the use Oron as a host, but here in the UK, I have not been able to download a single file from it, so have steered well clear of it. I had no idea this too is a 'rewards' focussed host.

I guess I was a little niave at the scope and how widespread that the 'payout' host had become; until now!! For this, I have to apolagise to you all.:o

With the MU saga, and now FS, I have learned a great many things.
I have, and will, follow all the news on this very closely, for I fear for the future of forums and free use of the internet for all. This truly is a transitional and key stage in the future of the internet.

I hope that in some form we are all able to continue doing what we enjoy doing here, be that in some other way of sharing - if evolution needs to take place -, but at the moment all I can see is a dark time for freedom of speech and use of the net. :(

Power should and always be and remain with the people, and not governments or legislation from which the few decide how to affect the mass, the global protests proved that, but will the protests be enough to ride or delay the change that is inevitably coming?

@all,

it was not our intention to remove good and still helpful post, it was rather the general obsoleteness of having threads about dead hosts in the help section.

If you don't mind, i will move NIN's helpful posts to this thread and also take advantage of buttsie's pragmatic suggestion for the thread title. I've also placed buttsie's post as starting post, cause it already defines the possible contents of this topic. All "why was the thread removed"-parts of this discussion have been removed (because of pragmatic reasons ;) )

the megaupload thread is binned, now, too. I've also changed the list in the section help:

Ah. These filehosts shutdowns are turning into a farce. My advice to anyone would be sure to be within the time limit of paypal buyer protection program: 45 days of purchase. I was not - having bought 3 months of premium membership. So they couldn't help me. Well, some costly lessons had to be learned here. I might of course suggest buying a lifetime premium membership with Mega Upload instead which I also did ... no wait...:p If Rapid Share now goes down I fear having a nervous breakdown leading to something insane... like watching Fox News and let them shape my world view.

On a sidenote buttsie raises some good question in his initial post. Is password protection necessary?

I don't see the need on Rapidshare due to their privacy guidelines (no software scanning their files; and if the link is posted elsewhere I'm quite sure any rar password will too) but this might change in the future if they follow suit to Filesonic's ideas and implement some ***cking Skynet countermeasures (to use a term from the old Terminator movies) to track file data and so on. Whatever Filesonic do from now on - I won't even fart in their general direction.

Expect this wont be the last time they cut a host off at the knees

Almost makes either sticking with the big hosts that have been around for years and seemingly are bullet proof ie rapidshare, mediafire or what ever long standing premium filehost your using

or try one of the multihosts but be aware some like mirror creator
have in the Terms and conditions - no porn - so if they find your stash most likely goodbye entire account as opposed to a file here and there being removed via DMCA notices.

dead link removed

which then means if one host is nobbled your posts will still be active

One things almost certain and thats uploaders should never use any filehost as a backup
for their collection

Links that appear to be dead but are not

On our sister site planet suzy in filehost Mediafire sticky

A nasty little trick their using to try and stop the
google indexing / files on 3rd party forums from being downloaded

This is also being used on the search engine files tube for mediafire links

This snippet from a user

If I highlight a mediafire link in firefox and "open link in a new tab", it shows up an invalid link(file deleted for terms of service reason).

However, if you copy the link and make your own tab and paste the link, the link is okay!

It looks to me as though "open link in a new tab" leaves some trace of the planetsuzy forum, and mediafire will just give you that invalid link message.

I experimented with that "open link in a new tab" from google cache, and the links were fine.

I couldn't figure out the difference in the links between the cache and the PS forum, when I realized the links themselves were no different.

The difference is the original source of the link."

Firefox has an addon called RefControl.
You can block the referrer for specific websites.
This should resolve this problem.
