Nudity edited out of TV shows

I am located not too far from Los Angeles Calif. and one of the televison stations on Saturdays is running the old Sex and the City tapes. Saw one the other day in which K-C slipped in to bed with some guy, and over maybe five seconds it displayed a lot of her bare upper portion.

Is this common with the program(s)?

Since Sex and the City was originally on a pay subscription channel they could show a lot of nudity (and did) but most of it gets snipped for syndication on broadcast channels.

From what i remember of the show she used to strip off in just about every episode, in the UK, if not full frontal, fully nude then at least topless.

I knew there was a reason i watched that show. :D

So, you think this was just some poor re-re-editing then?

I'm pretty sure the producers were prepared for non-nude syndication and made sure scenes were shot with and without nudity.

Just look at the episodes of The Outer Limits and Tales From The Crypt that have been shown on satellite TV. The nudity, often quite mild, is often clumsily edited out even when shown in the very early hours.

The only cases that I know of where two versions of a film are shot is porn where some companies will shoot enough video to edit together a "soft-core" version for sale to certain satellite or cable channels. (Usually subscribed to by hotel chains and such.) (And I'm not even sure if they do it anymore.) Television productions are on too tight deadlines and budgets to shoot two versions of an episode. The only consideration usually given for later syndication of a TV show is hitting the magic "100 episodes" mark as that is considered to make daily "stripping" more viable. ("Stripping" in this context meaning the show can be shown daily Monday thru Friday instead of the usual weekly. 100 episodes means the entire series can be shown daily and only repeat three times a year.)

Two examples I've seen in the last couple of years were the shows Jeremiah and Dead Like Me. In both cases they were originally shown (in the US) on pay cable channels and had nudity and "sexually suggestive" scenes in many episodes. When they were syndicated to free broadcast many episodes were simply not shown at all (which played merry hell with the story in Jeremiah) and others have lots of commercials to fill in the time from snipped scenes.

(All of this applies to US television.)

So, what other shows do people know of that have their naughty bits snipped for syndication and re-runs?

In the uk over the weekend the film Mrs Henderson Presents was on during the day. Sone nudity was cut but alot was left in. Not too sure how they decided what to allow and what to cut.

It would appear this is fairly common. You only have to look at the pilot episode of Stargate SG1. Shame it wasn't Amanda though!
