picture cleanup etiquette question

I have a collection of images that I've gleaned from all over the parts of the internet. One of the things I do with some of the pictures is run them through photoshop to clean them up (stitch, recrop, color enhance, remove dust/scratches/noise, etc). I've posted some of the work I've done onto these messages boards (providing references back to the original person who scanned/posted the images as best I can).

For the most part, I've gotten a positive response to them; although one person who does some scans has indicated to me that they would rather not have their images cleaned up and reposted.

Is there a general consensus with regards to posting picture cleanups? Is there somewhere that people who post their scans indicate one way or the other how they feel about it?

I think you should ignore him/her/them

Let's be honest here. The image doesn't belong to the scanner. In fact, this "all credit to the original scanner" thing is pretty absurd. "ALL credit"?!? How about some, (most), credit to the original photographer, lighting people, makeup artists, models and publishers who created the picture that someone puts into a scanner? The idea that the scanner gets to control what's done to an image that he or she has scanned is kinda nuts. Scanning is not hard to do properly. The hardest thing about it is finding the mag to scan and any fool with a few bucks can do that. Giving a person credit for the scan is the best they deserve. Anyone who wants the unprocessed image can go find that scan. Not allowing "your" scan to be processed is an ego trip that deprives the rest of us of things like clean-up etc. that the original scanner was either too lazy or not skilled enough to do.

The general rule of thumb here is to give credit and link to original poster , they are the ones who took the time to either scan image or find it elsewhere on the web , as someone who scans magazines I see my images on other sites or am told about them (vef is only site I post) . To scan 1 magazine it can take up to 10 hours depending on condition of the mag and how dedicated to scanning I am , not to mention the time it takes to find them , I brought a bunch back from Mexico late last year and another scanner takes trips to different countries in Europe every year looking for magazines, so it's more time than money
I don't mind people cleaning or straightening my scans but I want credit for my time also all my scans have my mark , the photographer the model and anyone involved in the original shoot were paid money and all I ask for is a little credit for my time as you do when you clean them .
If someone has not liked their scans to be cleaned , pm me and I will see what I can do .

Yes, now and then a scanner doesn't like this. I don't understand the attitude, but recommend you leave his posts alone, if that's what he'd like

Just so it's clear, you're not breaking a VEF Rule if you do improve their images, but we want strife less than we want improvements, and that is our policy. So don't post if they've asked you not to

PM me or post here if you have any questions
