Needless to say I'm refering to Yorkshire. Thought I'd put up a few views of the Dales that I'm rather pleased with.

Superb pics D-P, the Yorkshire Dales and Durham Dales are probably my favourite places in the World, (the Durham Dales are more rugged, probably not as pretty, but wilder).

I dont know the Durham Dales anything like as much as the Yorks D's, though back in the 80s I worked on a TV documentary about the Pennines, spending 6 weeks shooting from Skipton to Hadrian's Wall and all points between. Quite a bit of it was in Weardale. High spot was the day we had a helicopter for the aerial shots. Eight hours on a sunny day 5000 feet above my favourite part of the world. We did an amazing shot at Malham Cove.

I remember going to stay with my brother when he was living in Apperly Bridge, and the rush of pleasure I got from contemplating the fact that the the cdars the passed me on the road as I took my dog for a walk were probably full of people who all spoke in a Yorkshire accent - West Yorkshire at that.

Some of my best holidays - actually, the best - have been in Robin Hood's Bay. I probably won't ever go back there now.

Great pictures.Two questions though,
The second pic in your first post- is that the place or model for the Windows XP default wallpaper?

The 6th picture in your second post, and the very last one (water falls)- do you have them in HQ, and without tags? They would make an excellent wallpapers.

I thought it always rained in England

It's relatively wet in the West and dryish further East.I live in the middle, most days it doesn't rain though neither is it mostly sunny either.About 22 inches of rain a year on average.
Fogs (the really thick ones) are a thing of the past , they were largely the result of pollution from coal.
It never gets very hot or cold either unlike in continental areas.

Apperley Bridge has a few claims to fame. The nearby village of Esholt used to be the one used in Emmerdale Farm, as it was called, before the revamp. Patrick Bronte, father of the famous writers, used to walk the 12 miles from Thornton at the other side of Bradford, to Apperley Bridge several times a week whilst courting. It is also the home of Woodhouse Grove School, the place your parents tried to get you in if you didn't pass the enterance exam to Bradford Grammer School.

As for RH's Bay, I dont think it has changed that much. Still a fabulous place to visit.

We once walked through a wood and past a sewage farm and through another wood and came to the garden at the back of a pub; then, round the front: The Woolpack!

John Wroe, an evangelist who died in 1863, tried to walk on the water of the River Aire at Apperley Bridge. The silly beggar didn't think to try it without an audience, so not only did he get wet but also got chased back into Bradford by an angry and disappointed (if maybe a bit gullible) crowd (it's a hell of a hill to run up, as well). There was a book - Mr Wroe's Virgins - based on his story, written by Jane Rogers; a TV series based on the book featured several young actresses (inc. Minnie Driver and Kathy Burke) in various states of undress(to get back to the main topic of this forum).

There is a really nice little Folly in the woods to the right, as you come out of Bradford, and once you get past the river and canal. Quite a walk, though.

But these are images of a few of my personal favourite places in GOC.

Fountains Abbey-near Ripon:

http://img263.imagevenue.com/loc572/th_76581_Fountains_Abbey_North_View_122_572lo.jpg (http://img263.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=76581_Fountains_Abbey_North_View_122 _572lo.jpg)http://img201.imagevenue.com/loc424/th_76583_Fountains_Abbey_South_View_122_424lo.jpg (http://img201.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=76583_Fountains_Abbey_South_View_122 _424lo.jpg)http://img194.imagevenue.com/loc247/th_76584_Fountains_Abbey_2_122_247lo.jpg (http://img194.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=76584_Fountains_Abbey_2_122_247lo.jp g)

Popular tourist destination, maintained by the National Trust and you have to pay to get on to the site, plus its a fairly arduous 15 minute walk through a wood to get there. When I was a kid it was free, and we went there for family picnics several times.

Holme Moss:

Way back when there was a craze for Citizens Band Radio, people used to drive to the carpark at the top of Holme Moss because up there you could get reception all the way to the North Sea. The view itself on a good day is more than 40 miles, across the Vale of York: you can pick out the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the cooling towers of the notorious Drax power station, especially when it's cold and the plumes of sulphur dioxide are rising. Sorry about this sour note, but it's a fact.

The winter scene is of the Moss itself, which is the point where Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire join together. In the village of Holme, just below the reservoir, there's a pub called The Fleece, which I have posted on Tabler's favourite pubs thread. The road soars from Holmfirth (where Last of the Summer Wine is set), up past Holme to the summit of Holme Moss, into Derbyshire towards Glossop. BTW Glossop doubles as Royston Vesey in The League of Gentlemen. Before it reaches Glossop, it joins the A6024 and runs either NW towards Manchester or SW towards Sheffield: the Sheffield Road takes you through the Woodhead Pass. This used to be a favourite rideout for me on my motorbike way back when I still lived in West Yorkshire .

Nostalgia, nostalgia...

Great pictures.Two questions though,
The second pic in your first post- is that the place or model for the Windows XP default wallpaper?

The 6th picture in your second post, and the very last one (water falls)- do you have them in HQ, and without tags? They would make an excellent wallpapers.

Thanks. I've not seen the wallpaper you mention, but I doubt it. As for the waterfall pictures, first is Linton Falls near Grassington, the second is West Burton Falls. I do have them in higher quality without tags. Do you want them for personal use? If so, I'm sure I can dig them out for you.

Is the sunset one Ribbleshead?
Lovely pictures by the way, makes me feel almost homesick!:)[/QUOTE]

Yes it is. Not actually a sunset, rather a somewhat heavy-handed use of a sunset grad. Would have been better with a back lit steam train crossing of course.

I was just hoping to use them for my desk top.I'm partial to waterfall pictures, and the two are both really nice.

Sorry, of course, I now know the one you mean. I suspect it might be from a US agency collection. Nice to be compared though. As for the waterfall pics, I will make a gallery of a few higher res ones and send you the link so you can have any you like. Might take me a little while.
All the best
