View Full Version : Favorite Opening Theme For A TV Show

Estreeter

A lot of TV shows had a great opening theme (Intro) over the years and make the show instantly recogniseable without even seeing the show,
Some that come to mind instantly are
Mash, I Dream Of Jeanie, Cheers, Love Thy Neighbor, Looney Tunes, Gilligans Island, I could go on. But this is my favorite
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUT07eZoXPw
The Sopranos

Can anybody add some instantly recognisable themes

Thunderbirds - I want that played at my funeral just as the coffin slowly slides behind the screen.
Although I toyed with the idea of having the Stingray theme - "Anything can happen in the next half-hour".

I've been told I have a warped sense of humour.

Forgot about Mike Post. You could do a separate thread on this guy's TV theme songs alone. He did "Rockford Files", "White Shadow", "Riptide", "Magnum P.I.", "Greatest American Hero" and lots more.

You can't beat The Prisoner, The Professionals(an unseen episode that has a much more dynamic opening and a voiceover that was dropped for some reason), Battle of the Planets cartoon based on the Japanese version called Gatchaman now that was worth rushing home from school to watch.

I'll see your Mike Post and raise you Perry Mason.

Heres one of the 40 second opening sequences (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHqebO8aAc4).

and here is the full piece (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCaCXXCM42Y&feature=related) at a slightly different pace.

The theme is entitled "Park Avenue Beat" by Fred Steiner.

Cos if you want the best 'uns, but you don't ask questions,
Then brother, I'm your man. 'Cos where it all comes from is a mystery,
It's like the changin' of the seasons, and the tides of the sea.
But here's the one that's drivin' me beserk, Why do only fools and horses work?
La-la-la. La-lala-la. La-la-la. La-lala-la.

CLOSING

We've got some half price cracked ice and miles and miles of carpet tiles,
T.V.s, deep freeze and David Bowie L.P.s,
Ball games, gold chains, whatsnames, pictures frames and leather goods,
And Trevor Francis track suits from a mush in Shepherds Bush,
Bush, bush, bush, bush, bush, bush, bush ...
No income tax, no V.A.T., no money back, no guarantee,
Black or white, rich or poor, we'll cut prices at a stroke,
God bless Hooky Street. Viva Hooky Street. Long live Hooky Street.

Iconic 1980s serial which really captured the spirit of the age. Lots of bling, superficial glossy surfaces and glamour with an extremely seamy and ugly underbelly. The strength of the series was that it knew the surface was fake and explored the implications of this fact. Don Johnson as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs had the facile charm and rich boys toys of successful pimps: that was their cover. But James Edward Olmos as Lieutenant Castillo, their boss, gave this pop video an unexpected depth in a performance rich in character and the sort of Alpha Male personal authority necessary to keep Crockett and Tubbs under command.

The opening sequence and tune gives you a lot of information about this show in 60 seconds.

One from my youth that I found myself whistling this morning Robinson Crusoe, and then I started singing 'On white Horses' anyone remember that one?

I remember the series and the tune very well. It was a staple of holday TV, along with Casey Jones: both total rubbish, but enjoyable rubbish.

The white horses in the series are of course Lipizzaners, a breed which might have died out after WW2, had not General Patton 'liberated' vital breeding horses from Czechoslovakia before handing the territory over to the Red Army. They are really lovely horses aren't they?

They remind me of a very good novel called Airs Above The Ground, written by Mary Stewart, which I read as a teenager: a clever crime/espionage thriller which featured Lipizzaner horses as a key element of the plot. Airs Above The Ground is a really difficult dressage manoevre performed by horses in the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Only the very best horses can do it. The novel is a really good read and I recommend it highly.

The very pretty girl whom we see in tabler's clip is Helga Anders, who would have been 16 or 17, just the same age as her character (called Julia) who has been sent to live on a farm where her uncle breeds Lipizzaner horses and discovers her true calling to be with these remarkable animals - but I'm making the series sound better than it really was...

Sadly, Fraulein Anders passed away in 1986, aged only 38. My German isn't very good but I think herzversagan means that she died of a heart attack. Damn shame.

Two of these are my favourites too. Only vaguely remember the rally theme. Dr. Who was both a technical triumph and great music. Must have sounded totally trippy at the time.

World In Action. Bleak, savage, beautiful. How on earth could anyone imagine a Hammond Organ and guitar would sound like that with the right score. It made the bane of many people's lives sound like a depressed Tiger that's about to rip your head off.

I forgot about World In Action when I wrote the UFO post. Whose treatment of the Hammond is completely different but nonetheless just as effective. I'm eating my words here. I said the UFO theme tune was the only example of Hammonds sounding good. Goes to show that the right musician can use any well tuned instrument if it has the sounds he or she wants to make.

Can anyone else come up with any good theme tunes with Hammond Organs in them?

Guys I remember (I think) something called The Singing Ringing Tree, now what I'm going to describe sounds like one of my old drink and drugs trips but I'm sure it happened!
There was a man who was turned into a bear, a nasty dwarf and a mechanical fish and a princess who was kiddnaped and turned into something else!

Can anyone else remember this or am I having weed flashbacks?

I believe the story about the tape being almost transparent was also true of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, after all the operatic vocal overdubs were completed.

And back to the thread ;)

Doctor Who, Late Pertwee/most of Tom Baker. The music was awesome and the visuals were as scary as hell to a 7 year old :)

The theme to Black Beauty always sends a shiver down my spine, just a wonderful theme:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0aZCGcaxTo&feature=related

I also have fond memories of the song "Eye Level" by the Simon Park Orchestra, the theme to "Van der Valk" and a UK number one no less :)

Too many to mention them all, but one that springs immediately to mind was the opening theme to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", largely because the opening couple of seconds of it sounded like it was going to be Blondie's "Fade Away and Radiate".

Two other - better - themes I liked were Angelo Badalamenti's theme for "Twin Peaks" and the theme music for "Six Feet Under".

Going a lot further back I can remember the entire tune and lyrics for the opening and closing themes for "The Beverly Hillbillies" without ever having tried to learn them, which says a lot about their stickability.

"The Flashing Blade" Don't think too many people remember the latter.

Wrong again :p:D- that's another one like Robison Crusoe - sticks in the mind.

Here's a reminder - low quality but what can you expect from a tape of an old 60's show.

The intro for the Six Million Dollar Man impressed the hell out of me when I was a kid, although the series was crap in the main.

If you're a Brit you might remember a drama series called Warship, about the crew of a Royal Navy frigate called HMS Hero. That had a great intro.

Chris Carter's Millennium series is one of my recent favourites in the intro stakes.

Also, "Name: Richard Kimble, doctor of medicine. Destination: death row, state prison ..." - The Fugitive.

The Mission Impossible theme is really brill. And a biiiiiig shout for the Roobarb theme. :D

Hey guys, when the Marvel cartoons aired back in 1966, they had bumpers in between the segments that described their powers and weapons and/or talked about their lives. I guess when they syndicated them in the early 70's some TV stations opted to replace the bumpers with commericals, so most people have never seen them. I found a link on youtube for 4 of them together in 1 clip. 2 for Hulk and 2 for Iron Man.

:D:D:D I was going to write more but I thought I would keep it simple. Very Generic. I feel like I have heard the theme before don't know what series but it is so close to another 70's theme, hell it might actually be close to a lot of 70's themes!

Edit: I think it reminds me of the Trapper John MD ('79) theme, also very generic:

Don't quite know why, but I've always thought the intro to Homicide: Life on the Street was one of the best intros to a TV series. It has to be the first 3 seasons though; they were changed for the 4th, 5th and 6th seasons and they aren't as good.

Intro to the first season (the best season by far):

The programme's theme music is "No Mean City" composed by Mike Moran. The vocals were originally performed by Maggie Bell, formerly a member of Stone the Crows, but an instrumental version is now used for both opening and closing credits

and no instrumental version could ever be a patch on the original Maggie Bell version...

Incidentally, while looking for that, I tripped over one I'd forgotten- short-lived (a couple of series around 1978/9) ITV detective series 'Hazell'- again, it's the unmistakeable Maggie Bell singing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KR-jU0NpjE0

These opening themes are an art unto themselves. I have a friend who fast forwards through all the openings, but I love to watch them. They are really an art form, and one of the best to me is from Six Feet Under...

http://youtu.be/KYAe0qwg9Yw

The music, the video, just perfect. The music is by Thomas Newman, son of the legendary Alfred Newman, and cousin of Randy Newman. They actually transplanted that tree from Pennsylvania, or somewhere, just to film it. The way the gurney wheel swivels just at the point of the uptempo of the music...the beautiful blooming of the flower in synch with the soundtrack..perfect.

I quite like the really simple title-sequence for this show, despite being a bit dated (and probably not the best show on earth).

Estreeter was exactly right, starting this thread, to pick out the Sopranos opening credits; not just the music but the accompanying visuals have you asking yourself, what could a programme that starts like this possibly be like? At the time the series was first shown I was only ever watching things I'd recorded and usually whizzed through the credit sequences impatiently, but that was one that I always made a point of sitting through.

Another must-see every time, and an equally happy marriage of driving beat and intriguing vision:

Yahoo! recently did a "tournament" to pick the greatest TV Theme of all time. It doesn't matter who won, because they left off the best of all-time, Hawaii Five-O.

The Survivors opening theme back in the mid-70s scared the cr*p out of me
I haven't seen the "new improved Survivors". Not interested.
There's something about this 1970s TV series which pushes so many buttons :)
Here's the theme tune, with a mangled version of the first episode:

They don't make "end-of-the-world" stuff like they used to :(

Some might say this classic theme sums up the GD/VET Mods (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRX4mlFi06A) :o

Although if they damn well did :mad::mad:

They`d be spot on right ;)

Cinéma Cinémas, a french TV show in the 80's, about movies ofc but also directors, actors, etc.
From the wide world, but often US (real) artists.
I've seen there the best interviews of John Ford, Charles Bukowski, Russ Meyer, etc..
Not at all the usual promotional poor stuff we have now about cinema.
The best show ever on french TV.

The opening music theme is by Franz Wazman (extract from "A place in the sun" soundtrack).
Plus short samples from various masterpieces movies.
Paintings by genius graphic designer Guy Pellaert.
