Hey you can take that bloody look off your face for a start as there are a damn sight worse GD topic threads in this section ok , and i should know , i started most of them !
See what we have here revered fellow members is a thread for you to say which box sets you think are great and well worth purchasing , along with which ones you feel were rank and better off avoided
Also this thread covers ALL possible box sets through ALL possible genres ;)
I`m telling you folks this threads got legs :D
Speaking of legs i`ll kick this off with one of the best box sets i ever bought
http://img196.imagevenue.com/loc612/th_64518_LEXX1_123_612lo.jpg (http://img196.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=64518_LEXX1_123_612lo.jpg)http://img20.imagevenue.com/loc814/th_64526_LEXX2_123_814lo.jpg (http://img20.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=64526_LEXX2_123_814lo.jpg)
Now for the life of me i couldn't tell you exactly what it was about , except it has a hero you'd quite easily wish dead (Or at least deader) and a comedy foil who`d be funnier shot out into space .Also some piss poor acting , virtually no true story to speak of and the effects are kinda cheap looking for today and were even back then
So why do i recommend it ?
Eva Habermann
http://img238.imagevenue.com/loc242/th_64568_Eva_Habermann_006_123_242lo.jpg (http://img238.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=64568_Eva_Habermann_006_123_242lo.jp g)
That`s why
Or should i say
A 19 year old Eva Habermann :cool::cool:

That`s why :D
She makes the show brilliant , in fact she makes the show full stop ,as her presence in any of it`s pointless scenes lifts them to the heights of wonder and delight
Especially a certain scene where she takes a shower :cool::cool:
Also season ones movie box set has some pretty excellent co-stars including Rutger Hauer as a nervy drugged out pervy and Malcom Mcdowell as er , well i`m not sure who he was but that`s not important right now
No what is important is that you now know one of the best box sets you could ever buy
So onto one to avoid
Which sadly is Season 2 of Lexx and every season there after , as sure Eva appeared in the first couple of episodes but she`d lost a load of weight and seemed unhappy :(
Not surprising really as she`d made the show extremely popular yet had been really badly let down and kept hanging on by the producers :(
Anyway in my opinion the seasons after the first are some of the worst examples of how a couple of stupid producers can let success go to their heads :(
Still enough moaning about their mistakes as at least they helped bring

I bought both seasons of "The Monkees" from Australia (fortunately, I have an all region player). These sets are great. In addition to all the episodes, you get commentaries from all four Monkees, Bob Raefelson and James Frawley. You also get "33 and 1/3 Revolutions per Monkee" (an hour special from '69), the unaired pilot, Kelloggs commercials and a lot more. Here's the kicker: I paid only fourteen bucks apiece plus shipping. Whatta bargain!

Dunno if you'd really class them as box-sets (although they do have 4 discs in each), but the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy are superb; to me they're what DVDs are all about - full of excellent special features and documentarys.
Oh, and yeah - Lexx season one was very enjoyable, and mainly for Eva. Weird, yes, but fun

My favourites
The complete X-Files box set 61 discs of great Television - I also have the 9 individual series box sets
The complete Buffy The Vampire Slayer - 39 discs and Joss Whedon's autograph
Robin of Sherwood - British TV at its best
U.F.O.
Xena - Warrior Princess - guilty pleasure maybe but I guess I must like it as I have 2 different complete sets of this series.

Although I have mentioned a few of the movies in it in the worst movies ever thread there has to be a special mention here for "Decrepit Crypt of Nightmares".
I thought this was like the other 50 movie box sets from Mill Creek but this is a special breed of Turkey. I've only watched 6 of them so far and 3 have been crap and one is OK-ish so the omens (no pun intended) for the rest are not good.
What it does not advertise is these are 50 independent movies many by amateur movie makers who think that gore is more important than plot and lighting and photography is often similar to what a child with its first camera would produce.
I like B-movies but some of these movies stretch even my pretty low standards.
The River - Legend of La Llorona was pretty atmospheric and deserves singling out.
On the plus side it is cheap and works out at 30/40p a movie so it's not the worst money I have ever spent. There's also 3 Beverly Lynne movies here so it's gone up a few notches in my estimation.

any boxsets i want i dont bother buying but buy the individual special/limited editions. i do this as my nephew bought a couple of box sets (bond springs to mind) and they make another film and then ruin your nice boxset by having an odd dvd at the side. i also like buying some dvds from the usa as they have some extras in them we dont get in britain and sometimes theyre cheaper inc. shipping-they dont call it rip off britain for nothing! there arent any tv series id buy on dvd except gimme, gimme, gimme which ive got on individual discs, i might buy magnum one of the days though...
as for the dvd player, mrs avidfan bought me a new one (not multi region) and i just look for an unlock code on the web instead of paying extra for a multi region one-works a treat!

The Best boxsets are the complete ones with all the extras including the 3 disc Peter Jackson King Kong, the Long Good Friday (2 dvd 1cd), Kingdom of Heaven (4 discs), Lord of the Rings trilogy (4 disc versions) and The Wicker Man (3 disc version-the original, not yours Cage!).
What I detest though is buying a box-set and then finding a later release with more extras but that's down to corporate greed. If you are a fan of one movie/series it has to be annoying when you spend a lot of money on the definitive version and a year later find a newer updated all singing, all dancing version.
Prime examples Blade Runner, brilliant movie but which box set do you buy?
Final Cut - 2 disc version
Final Cut - 3 disc version, 2 DVD & 1 CD
Final Cut - 5 disc version
Final Cut - 6 disc version, 5 DVD & 1 CD
Peter Jackson's King Kong
2 disc special edition - which I bought on its release date April 10 2006.
3 disc deluxe extended edition - which I also have, which was released on November 13th 2006 just in time for Christmas.
Also incomplete box sets, I have Charles Band's Puppet Master box-set but was disappointed as it only has the first 2 movies, a later one with lots of flashbacks and Demonic Toys which is Ok but NOT part of the Puppet Master series, although it has Tracy Scoggins in it. Charles I love your movies but please give us some proper box-set collections -like the 5 disc Subspecies set.

A master class in complete-ness with 9 DVD's. Each movie has 2 discs, 1 containing the theatrical version, the other the Director's cut and there are more extras on each disc to keep even a completist like me happy. There's even an extra extras disc.
This is how box-sets should be done!
I have 2 copies, 1 that I bought at full price and 1 when Asda had it on sale at £14 and it's now on sale at Amazon for under £10. If you haven't already got it what are you waiting for?

To avidfan, and anyone else, when it comes to multi-region DVD players, it's not the cost but just finding one. I went on eBay just to price them, thinking I could then buy one locally and save the shipping cost. I called around and I couldn't find one place that sold them. The closest I came was Best Buy. They told me they used to sell one brand and they don't have that anymore. So I had to go back to eBay and buy one from an electronics place in Chicago (I'm in Southern California). I went mid-price. I got a brand new Toshiba multi-region player for 50 bucks plus 15 dollars shipping. Not bad at all.

Just noticed there is a new one out, which combines all (once again) in a single package.

As there is now a movie, I expect there may soon be another box set on the way?

A friend just loaned me a couple of seasons of "SCTV". I'd forgotten just how funny this show was. The box sets are great. You get full length episodes, commentaries, new interviews with the cast. Johnny LaRue, Bob and Doug McKenzie, Count Floyd, Edith Prickly, Lola Heatherton, Bobby Bittman, it's been too long since I visited with the good people of Melonville. I can't wait to see the rest.

With many of our all-time favourite movie monsters and plenty extras as well. Great movies and model busts of Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolfman. A real treat for nostalgics wanting a break from wannabe directors who seem to value gore more than they do a decent story.

These are all hilarious, I only saw the show about twice before it was cancelled the first time, but have bought all of the DVDs. Starting on Volume 3, I think, the sound is unedited, and scenes that were never on TV are made for the DVD only. Plus the commentary is as funny as the show sometimes.

Alien 3 & 4 never happened, they dont exist. Only 1 & 2 were made. Yes, thats right (mutters to self).
You might be interested to know there are discussions going on about another Alien movie, and Sigourney sounds interested. You may have a stand alone.
Series best for me is Babylon 5. Fantastic box set and JMS commentary is great. Five seasons plus a movie box set. Honourable mention Top Gear Collection 2.0.
Movie best would be The Lord of the Rings, directors cut, each movie in its own box. After you get through the movies there are 10's of hours of entertaining additional material. Wonderful.
I am very pleased that I got my Indiana Jones boxed set before the latest movie.
Cheers.

Finished watching The Wire box sets this morning and without a doubt i have to say this show is the ultimate cop show . Mean i used to think nothing could beat Homicide Life On The Streets , but this baby blew it away. Only thing disappointing about it is the fact there`s not going to be anymore of them . That and the second season wasn`t up to the same standards as the other four and had some really annoying sub-characters. But then i should have known by the title theme, which is the poorest of the lot. Coincidently the theme i liked most is season four , which also happens to be the best of the five in my opinion

The format and subject matter of her show might not appeal to everyone but I find her very funny and very cute , never more so than when she has her hair down. The sister`s attractive to, just a pity there`s no actual full frontal jewdity from either of them. Still maybe things will change and clothing lessen in the next season , or at least the one after that

Anyway that aside it`s still a great show as the self centered uncaring attention seeking Sarah (http://www.vintage-erotica-forum.com/t45235-sarah-silverman.html) wreaks havoc each episode, while her too good to be true sister makes allowances and excuses for her. Also the next door neighbours are funny enough to have their separate show. Just a shame the guy who plays the cop isn`t the best with the old timing, and that there`s only six episodes in the tiny season. Would`ve been cool if they`d been more extras aswell , but then it only cost me a fiver so who am I to complain :D

I`d remembered watching the film when I was young and hadn`t thought it much cop , well apart from the cool looking cylon centurions . Also remembered the original TV show back in the early eighties which to be honest was pretty much total pants . All except for one episode that is where if memory serves a centurion and human cylon were stranded on earth during Halloween, now that was an episode i enjoyed as it was full of humour and had a bloody sad ending .
Anyway what i`m saying is in general i didn`t hold BG in very high regard and so would never have purchased a season of the new show , let alone the entire complete box set.
Thankfully a friend knew better and got me it and so since early Christmas morning i`ve been watching them , and holy crap the show is brilliant !. So brilliant in fact i`d actually put it on a par with Farscape . Not just because it has similar fantastic looking honeys , but that the script is tighter than a gnats chuff and as unpredictable as a woman !.
Already on season three and it`s panning out in a way i would never have believed . Sure it would have been perfect if they`d actually built at least one proper centurion and not relied on slightly jarring CGI . Yet that aside the show is more or less flawless and i could not recommend it strongly enough :thumbsup:

It's one of the best shows i've ever seen! Be interesting to see what you think of the ending, some fans did'nt like it, i thought it was perfect and i hope you do too!

Haven`t got there yet as i`m just finishing "Season Four " , so far and without giving any spoilers away i must admit i`ve become quite disappointed with the way the shows progressed. But then it started to go awry in the middle of the third season i think. Pity really as they`ve become far too bogged down with starbucks destiny , mysticism , flashbacks and dreams for my liking. Also the main characters seem to change their personalities as the current episode dictates , then once it`s over they revert back again. Man and where`s the action gone ?.
This season especially has been maddening !
A cool new storyline idea starts up and a massive space battle begins , so what do they do ?.
Why let it all happen off camera, while we get to hear two now very tiresome leads discuss if there`s an afterlife and discuss and discuss and discuss = Yawn
Oh and can someone put the plank that is Tahmoh Penikett out of his misery , as he has only one acting style = Ham
Also who told Mary McDonnell she was allowed to get botox injects mid season ?, she looks frankly ridiculous and worse bloody expressionless .
Never ceases to amaze me why actresses think it smart to change the way their face moves , or in the case of Mary , doesnt
Anyway as of now the show has begun to unravel for me :(
Still there`s twelve episodes left to go so hopefully they can pull something out of the bag , and my head out of the oven.
Would help if they properly utilized Grace Park and Tricia Helfer , as both are great actress and total babes but have been strangely sidelined

like Greenskull, i have a habit of waiting for box sets to lets say mature rather than become cheaper lest you call us cheap-arses.
With that in mind i trawl through HMV & local shops looking for bargains.
I grown fond of CEX the thinking mans pawnbrokers as recently i found life season 1 for £10, bargain, great series.
With the advent of streaming sites, ive now found it is possible to watch many of the recent shows...NCIS, CSI, Heroes..etc 1 day after they are shown in America rather than waiting 6 months for the series to premier over here & a further 8-9 months before you can buy a box set so the only reason to buy a box set now is for collection purchases, however many series like supernatural, CSI...etc have a nasty habit of releasing half-season box sets with £30+ price tags, not cool.

I do tend to lurk round my local Blockbuster looking for bargains. I recently got the Blackadder box set which I'm very pleased with, although I'm rather sad that they didn't choose to include the pilot episode of the show. Quite surprised as well, since I've watched it several times on Youtube.
Best buy so far though was the Eddie Izzard box set, from HMV's website: price in the HMV shop £50, price off the site £12.99 including postage :)

Spindoe!!!!!!!
Ray McAnally stars in the 1968 ITV series as crime boss Alex Spindoe who is released from a five-stretch only to find his assistant has taken over his empire and stolen his wife. So he sets out to steal it all back again...
Six episodes of pure malevolent joy - Ray McAnally plays Spindoe like an accountant whose figures don't quite add. Up.
Yay for ITV 60's drama. :)

:D
Actually have two episodes of Battlestar Galactica left , and they`ve been left for a reason. That being the ten episodes leading up to this final two (No pun intended) have been bleeding torturous.
What the hell happened to this show ?
It started out fun ,believable despite the story , and better still damn sexy !
For me the series came to a dead stop during the boxing episode , that is the episode which was devoted to a couple of boxing matches that would never have occurred if the writers hadn`t become so obsessed with turning the show into Thirty Something in space :(
Ok the Presidents botox didn`t help the shows credibility that`s true , as the likely hood of someone with terminal cancer and about to die in a few months bothering to get a face lift wasn`t easy to accept .
But then she started behaving oddly at the end of season three , so why shouldn`t she then look odd and sound odd ( Well you try talking without moving your lips) for the last two seasons ?.
Still it wasn`t just her , and it wasn`t just the "Going through the motions" acting from other leading people who before really put there hearts into it .
It`s as i said , the way the characters personalties changed to suit the scenes progression.
So you have a father turn on his son when the episode previous he praised him too the hilt , then the next episode he embraces said son again because it helps add to the following story , then a tale after that he`s turned on him again.
But you know what really put the nails in this shows coffin for me ?
Warning spoiler alert
Ok of sorts
Three things destroyed the show for me , three total let downs of ideas that which would have , if followed , solidified this show in the pantheon of classics .
Those three things being
Don`t forget i warned you
1) How Boomer and Caprica six form an alliance , kill one of their own kind and now must go on to convince the rest of their fleshjobs that the war against humanity must end etc .
Only the most important part is never shown , we don`t see how they convinced the rest of their kind or get to learn how human cylons really live. In fact the chemistry those two characters had at that moment is from that point on ignored . Even worse the whole show jumps ahead an entire year, what a bloody cop out !
2) The human cylons disagree and a civil war begins , the possibilities of which are far reaching and destined to be cool to see. What with the expected space battles , betrayals and such like.
Only we never get to see anything after the civil war breaks out . Also most annoying is a huge cylon versus cylon battle does take place , only it does so off stage and away from our interested eyes . No we sadly miss out on the battle until the war has more or less ended and the 5`s ,6`s and 8`s are in full retreat. But on the plus side during those four episodes where we never even see mention of the raging battles , we do get to see the frozen faced president coo over the whispering voiced Admiral and a half dozen other such simpering lame stories which bring nothing to the overall core story arc !
3) Baltar talks to a Cylon soldier , he tells it all about god and the soul .How in gods eyes the cylon would seem to be a slave in not using his god given free will etc . The cylon listens and absorbs , then ...........
Well it gets destroyed just as soon as it begins to believe ,of course ,and that particular idea is never mentioned again , of course .
Spoiler over
You know some shows you start watching and you enjoy them so much you really don`t want them to end . You dread for the final series . For me this WAS one of those shows , that is it was until after Season 2, Episode 19: Lay Down Your Burdens: Part 1
:(
Now like i say i can`t even be arsed to watch the finale :(
Better cheer myself up by naming some of the shows actors who need more lessons , or at least need to be aware that the people watching them have paid at the door and deserve some effort if not respect
Edward James Olmos = Admiral William Adama - The whisper supreme , who sporadically shouts, and if we`re lucky also gurns like he hasn`t crapped for a month.
Mary McDonnell ... President Laura Roslin - Excellent before the botox , now performs on a par with a stoned ventriloquists dummy .
Jamie Bamber... Captain Lee 'Apollo' Adama - Was alright to begin with but now just clenches his jaw a lot , and likes bringing his hands to his face during intense scenes , as it helps obscure his lack of interest.
Katee Sackhoff... Captain Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace = Don`t get me wrong the girl is good to look at and watch, but her catch phrases "We`re going the wrong way " / " Who am i then " etc , grated on me so much over the last two seasons that i`m bored of her now.
Michael Hogan... Colonel Saul Tigh = Taking about catch phrases this plank is full of them , well two , "Gods damn " and " Frakk" which he repeats add nauseum from season three onwards . Mind you so does everyone else . Hmmmm so why even have him on board then ?.
Aaron Douglas...Chief Galen Tyrol = Ever seen a drunk try to get his flies undone while standing in a gale ?, well if you have you`ll know the face this man pulls when he`s attempting to act.
Tahmoh Penikett... Captain Karl 'Helo' Agathon = He acts alright , oh boy does he act. That is he acts as in you can see he`s trying to act . Which really he shouldn`t bother doing since he can`t. . Helo is it me you`re looking for ?, yes we need someone to use as expressionless scenery ,you`re hired. This dope would have been the first casualty of war if i`d had my way !.
Kandyse McClure... Officer Anastasia Dualla = Imagine a black Smurfette who`s just suffered a stroke on both sides , that`s Dualla that is .
Michael Trucco...Samuel Anders = As with most of them he started out alright , but nows a dribbling vegetable , literally .
Lucy Lawless ... D'Anna Biers = Her accent drifted more places than even the floundering plots .
Kate Vernon... Ellen Tigh = Another one with annoying new personality syndrome , or should that be drone , as in on and on and on .
Round and round all those actors go , will they ever be consistent again , who the hell cares or knows
Six who have been consistently brilliant throughout though , and kept me watching up till now have been .
James Callis... Dr. Gaius Baltar = The man can act and with even the dumbest lines , so no complaints .
Tricia Helfer ... Number Six = Astounding performance with every different personality played , hot damn gorgeous as well .
Grace Park... Lt. Sharon 'Boomer' Valerii = Same as above , top notch and painfully cute.
Alessandro Juliani ... Lt. Felix Gaeta = Convincing , only why they did what they did to him was pointless along with limbless .
Donnelly Rhodes... Dr. Cottle = One of the unsung stars of the show , so why not give this guy a back story , or in fact ANY story !!!
Dean Stockwell ... John Cavil = Has done more than most to inject his character and these wavering story ideas with some life , in fact i swear when he`s on screen you can see the true anger behind his eyes. Anger because he knows just how big this shows script writers have blown it !
Although my favourite from the show was the briefly seen
Michelle Forbes... Admiral Helena Cain
Still the least said about the treatment of that sparkling character the better :(

Major laughs again excellent thread :) Really loved the words about battle star in particular. One of my favourite box sets i have bought is the blacks books one . Really brilliant show to begin with but also you get excellent commentaries for every episode with the whole cast. Actually worth buying the box set almost just for those commentaries as theyre so funny. Also on the last disc it has a mini extra show done with puppets that look like the stars . Might not sound funny but believe me i laughed so much i got a cramp in my jaw:)

Network is an absolutely splendid company - I'd go so far as to say it's doing a better job than the BFI in preserving archive TV and making it available.
Last month I bought the Network DVD set of the 1971 LWT series, The Guardians. It was a dystopian political drama set in a future Britain heading towards fascism. Great series altogether - intricately plotted and brilliantly written; it even has one scene with a brief clip of a future episode of Coronation Street.
Network also released the 1983 television series of Stan Barstow's A Kind of Loving. And next month it plans to release one of the best remembered series of the 70s - The Hanged Man, starring Colin Blakely. Can't wait for my copy. :)

Band of Brothers box set. Fantastic series, and it's only £14.99 on play.com. If you enjoyed Saving Private Ryan you'll like this. Much better than 'Pacific' that was recently screened on Sky.
The interviews with the real soldiers as they are now are amazing. The last scene were Major Winters is narrating what happened to all the men as they're playing baseball is fantastic. Damian Lewis is perfectly cast as Winters. In fact the whole cast are perfect.

Another cheer for Network; resurrected one of my all time favourites - "The Sandbaggers", the gritty, grimy side of government intelligence work. All politics and backstabbing, not a Martini in sight. Roy Marsden peerless as the boss, Burnside. Favourite box set - Dad's Army. Annoying box set? The Complete West Wing UK edition - which you had to buy to get the extras expunged from the R2 issues. Grrr.

So onto one to avoid
Which sadly is Season 2 of Lexx and every season there after , as sure Eva appeared in the first couple of episodes but she`d lost a load of weight and seemed unhappy :(
Not surprising really as she`d made the show extremely popular yet had been really badly let down and kept hanging on by the producers :(
Anyway in my opinion the seasons after the first are some of the worst examples of how a couple of stupid producers can let success go to their heads :(
Have to disagree - I originally caught season 3 when it was on late night TV and was fascinated.
I recently bought the whole box set and found the first season's four feature length films to be too long and dragging in parts.
Seasons 2 & 4 are hit and miss - there are some brilliant episodes with quite a bit of repetitive filler - but always still good to watch - even if it's just for the marvelous set designs.
Season 3 though, still stands out as mini-series-masterpiece.
And perhaps sacrilegiously to many .... I think Xenia Seeberg is hotter than Eva Habermann. :)

Just finished watching three and already ordered season four
Without a doubt this is one of the greatest shows around right now and season three was the best yet . Jimmy Smits was a top foil and then nemesis for our blue eyed boy ,and i must admit at one point they played a slight of hand misdirection trick that even i fell for  :D
In fact the only unnecessary parts of this otherwise slice of pure televisual joy concerned a fat woman supposedly wasting away in a hospital bed , who acted so badly i began wishing it was a proper 3D release so i could have leaned in an suffocated the gasping blob

Sorry to disagree, but I thought it was quite disappointing, and nowhere near the standard of the first two.
The story was too contrived, and it just didn't really grab me.
Still love the idea and the characters, and the acting, dialogue and direction is top notch. But for me the first two series were full of suspense, and really unfolded cleverly to a gripping climax. This one didn't.

The best DVD box I´ve bought:
The James Bond attachebox ultimate collection. The 20 first Bond movies restaurated, with 5.1 Dolby digital surround, or DTS!
Well worth the high cost!
The worst DVD box:
Transformers 2 special edition. Packed in a plastic box is a DVD case shaped as Bumblebee, and you had to find out for yourself how to open the case...
Expensive, but simply stupid!
Best wishes dlnhank

Finished watching The Wire box sets this morning and without a doubt i have to say this show is the ultimate cop show . Mean i used to think nothing could beat Homicide Life On The Streets , but this baby blew it away. Only thing disappointing about it is the fact there`s not going to be anymore of them . That and the second season wasn`t up to the same standards as the other four and had some really annoying sub-characters. But then i should have known by the title theme, which is the poorest of the lot. Coincidently the theme i liked most is season four , which also happens to be the best of the five in my opinion

Have just finished the whole set and you're right it does blow everything else away.
Contrarily, I enjoyed the dockers and smuggling in season 2 better than the school scenes in 4 ... but Season three was, for me, the strongest.
I'll probably only watch season 1 again though in the near future - as it'll be interesting to see the origins of the characters again - knowing what happens to them all.

On a similar note to 'The Wire' is Generation Kill. Fantastic show and decent DVD box. Only 3 discs but some really nice extras. Top stuff.

I'm a big fan of Dexter myself, and finished watching the third series a few weeks ago.
No need to feel sorry , we all watch these sorts of programs with different mind sets and with differing expectations
Did smile at your use of the word contrived though given this is a series that preempts any murder by first warning us with a watered down version of the theme tune :D
Me i found season two less engaging than the third (Not that i didn`t enjoy it) because
- Warning mass spoilers contained underneath , which should only be highlighted if you haven`t already seen season two and three or have no wish to -
Throughout season two i found the danger Dex was meant to be in at times very predictable and not properly threatening when compared to the third one (Since it soon became clear the death dealing DA was willing to do anything to anyone and at any time ). Be it the odd house fire or the lumbering bay harbour butcher hunt . We knew he wasn`t going to get either singed or fingered . Lila too the female second love interest was so obviously insane even a sociopath like Dex would have realised from day one. Sure she had great legs but her awful over exaggerated English accent was too bloody jarring for me . Typing of which her final scene death in Paris went against the code in all possible ways , ways i won`t go into now though as that lazy tag on still annoys me a little. Because it`s something Dex would never have done . What else didn`t work so well for me ?. Ah yes the relationship between Carradine and Sis never worked for me , not least as they had zero chemistry and Carradine played it as if he knew he was on a tv show ?. Plus one of the best story lines of the season that being Dex`s set up of the brilliant Doakes for the BHB crimes fizzled out in a quite disappointing manner , even if visually it ended with an almighty bang :D
Season three on the other hand (For me) was very believable in comparison to the second. Being much more tightly written and having a more ambiguous moral centre, and as i`ve already said having a guest actor with true gravitas . Hell gravitas nothing the guy at times almost took the lead  Especially loved the roof top scene where he completely lost it yet remained sinisterly in full control. See that`s the kind of best friend / evil enemy Dexter needed for his third outing and i`m very glad he got it. Liked the cutter to , even if i did spot him as the killer the first moment we saw him. But then that`s still an under lying problem with these sorts of shows. Time is limited and it`s pretty much impossible to hold such cards to their chest. Mind you it might have helped matters if they`d hired a total unknown for that role.
Almost forgot , i really enjoyed the fathers presence in so many scenes .Never more so the one at the end with Dex in the Cutters clutches , because i hadn`t a clue how the guy was going to get out of that one. Thank God for wonky table legs eh
Phew , and that`s why i preferred the Third to the Second :D

This single DVD contains all 40 episodes of the fantastic animation series that was The Trap Door. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trap_Door) By far and away one of the greatest claymation series of all time.
It's less than a fiver people! Fire up your paypal accounts and get it ordered. And when you receive it and watch it, make sure you watch past the end credits.
You'll thank me for it. You either missed it as a kid or forgot about it.

There's a DVD box set of Monty Python's work out there. It's called: "Almost Everything Ever In One Gloriously Fabulous Ludicrously Definitive Outrageously Luxurious Monty Python Boxset".
I bought it about 18 months ago for about £70 and it's my favourite DVD box set. I reckon it's still available now. There are 15 DVD's in the set and here's what you get:
7 discs: Monty Python's Flying Circus, series 1 to 4,
1 disc: Monty Python Live At The Hollywood Bowl,
1 disc: Monty Python And Now For Something Completely Different,
2 discs: Monty Python's Meaning Of Life, film and bonus discs,
2 discs: Monty Python's Life Of Brian, film and bonus discs,
2 discs; Monty Python And The Holy Grail, film and bonus discs.
A must for all Python fans.

I bought the first two series of "Battlefield" recently and would heartily recommend them to anyone interested in military history.

Series 1 covers ...
1. The Battle of France
2. The Battle of Britain
3. The Battle of Midway
4. The Battle of Stalingrad
5. The Battle of Normandy
6. The Battle of Berlin
Series 2 covers ...
1. The Battle for North Africa
2. The Battle of the Atlantic
3. The Battle for Russia
4. The Battle for Italy
5. The Battle of Leyte Gulf
6. The Battle for the Rhine
Each box set contains six 2-hour episodes, and at £8.99 for each box set they're superb value.
Each Battle is split into various parts covering the lead-up to the battle itself, the tactics used by each side, the leaders, commanders, weapons and details of the forces involved, as well as the various phases of the battle, and the aftermath.
There are no interviews or discussions by historians so you actually get around two hours of footage in each programme, with some simple maps to show the disposition and movement of forces. There are some areas of overlap (for example, "The Battle For Russia" naturally included references to Stalingrad which is covered in detail on another disc) but for once, the programme makers didn't spend ages covering the same ground. There were also a few generic shots which cropped up once or twice, but these were hardly noticeable.
One of my main gripes about WWII documentaries is the use of the wrong footage, and I tear my hair out whenever I see shots of Typhoons in the Battle or Britain, or even worse, dogfights between Zeroes and Wildcats in the European theatre! I struggled to spot any obvious mistakes in these series.

Worst has got to be the most amateurish DVD set ever to appear on the legit market. The Master was an 80's series starring an ageing Lee Van Cleef as the master, a ninja warrior looking for his daughter. Poor pictures, out-of-syncaidio, absolute rubbish.
Best well one of my faves is Chance in a Million. It was released as a collection of all three series recently. Again 1980's but featuring a surprisingly sexy Brenda Blethyn and accident prone Tom Chance played by Simon Callow. Absolutely hysterical, and Breda gets down to her underwear a few times!
For Brits of a certain age, the holy grail could well be a DVD collection of Turtle's Progress ...

Yes I bought two discs too...my VHS tapes had better quality than the DVD´s..and the tapes is former rental tapes from the eighties.
A fun fact is that George Lazenby appears in one episode. He plays a secret agent on a mission...

Don't know that this qualifies, since they're spread over several sets, but my best one is "The Saint" starring Roger Moore. Wonderful time capsules and you'll have fun spotting actors who later turned up in the Bond films, including Lois Maxwell, Shirley Eaton, Anthony Dawson etc. as well as others (I just watched one with a very young Donald Sutherland).
Curiously, the B+W episodes are better plot wise than the colour, (even though the lower budgets show through more) probably because they're based on the original stories. Plus the wonderful opening "he's the famous Simon Templar!" can't be beat.
The worst? Not that I bought it but I saw an advert for the complete Brady Bunch series. I thought why on earth would anyone want such a thing?

Not much of a box set (only 3 discs) it has to be Fawlty Towers (or is that flowery twats?). 12 episodes of some of the best comedy ever to hit TV. Brilliant writing, excellent acting and those wonderful wobbly sets so beloved of 1970's British TV. Cleese and Booth created memorable characters and were not afraid to share the laughs around. Who could forget Basil attacking the Austin 1100 with a branch; the fire drill; the Siberian hamster called Basil; the psychologists; and last but not least the Germans guests?
The show's dated really well and will still be watchable for decades to come which is just as well. Shows like this will never be made again while TV (as well as the film and music biz.) is run by faceless accountants.

All together now: "Keep away from that Trap Door... You're a FOOL if you dare...Keep away from that Trap Door... 'Cos there's something down there...'
Yeah, I was only an undergraduate when that was out. As I was when Dangermouse was in its prime. Got the box set of that as well.
Best value: the reissued smaller box , complete West Wing which at least had the extras the US versions had had all along, deleted from the UK releases.
Along with Dad's Army - first Xmas it was out: £100. 'Too much'. Following Xmas: £50. Now? £30 on average.
Worst value? Warner Brothers have recently reissued Looney Tunes cartoons themed by character (2 for £10 in HMV). But I thought I'd better check, always up for filling the gaps in the collection, as the sods keep deleting them from YouTube. The Sylvester box and the Tweety Pie box have no fewer than six in common between them.

The 'remastering' actually includes some subtle improvements to special effects done in CGI. The BluRay edition has an option to see the original effects instead, but I couldn't justify coughing up £50+.

I nearly fell foul of that with some CSI box sets, placed an order but oddly there was no secure web site, instead it said they would contact me by e-mail
The next day I got an e-mail asking me to provide my card details

I the first series on BluRay a few years back. Managed to pick it up brand new for $NZ30 (about 10 quid). Even the guy in the store was surprised at how cheap it was!
There's one enhancement that's not CGI. For "Tomorrow is Yesterday", shots of the Earth from orbit were actually taken from the International Space Station.
Would love to get series 2 & 3, but can't find it anywhere these days. :(

Comes in a box set resembling a soldier's foot locker. A decent TV series depicting the Vietnam war from the perspective of a squad of young soldiers and their sergeant. Not all the soldiers make it to the end of the series.

Gotta agree with Max, season five was a let down, and I haven't seen season six! That said I can live in hope that the zip will be back for season seven!

My Favorites...
• The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr.
• Buffy/Angel/Firefly
• Babylon 5
• Dark Skies
• Day Break
• From the Earth to the Moon
• Max Headroom
• The Middleman
• Stargate SG-1/Atlantis/Universe
Worst experience I ever had with a box set was when Space: Above and Beyond finally was released to DVD, and the discs were defective on two different copies!
