I have the complete collection of Viz comic, from the 1st ever episode (which was sold in tiny numbers around the pubs of Newcastle and started the cult following) to this months issue (I just cant stop buying it now)
My two favourite characters now (they have come and gone over the years) are 8 Ace and Sid the Sexist. I think its the regional stereotypes that I like, 8 is a pissed up Yorkshireman and Sid is a thick as shit Geordie (as I'm a Geordie that lives in Yorkshire the appeal is obvious:D)
Other characters I like are Jack Black and his dog Siver, and one I miss is Norbert Colon (tight as a fishes chuff!)
Any comments on Viz guys?

Thieving Gypsy Bastards really made me chuckle, even though 'Viz' had to apologise in the next issue for stereotyping and offending Pikey's.
Which I found even more amusing because most Pikey's can't even read.

I like those one off stories like Christ on a Bike and the Amazing Bum Face Goats etc. My faves are Finbar Saunders, Johnny Fartpants, the original Buster Gonad, Felix and His Amazing Underpants, Nobby's Piles and Morris Day - sexual pervert. Oh and there was one character that featured only a couple of times and I think he was called Captain Morgan and His Hammond Organ :)
I stopped buying it about 5 years ago when I failed to find it amusing any more.

In 1989, when Mrs T was selling off the water industry, she used taxpayers money to advertise the excellence of the public asset which she was selling for a quick buck. One advert featured milk floats (an electric commercial vehicle used to deliver bottles of milk to Britains doorsteps way back when) but delivering water in milk bottles. The message seemed to be that pumping water from a reservoir to a tap is a stupendous achievement.
Viz deliciously parodied this advert and lit up one of the scandalous wrongdoings of Britain's soon to be privatised monopolies with a simple photograph of a milk bottle with a piece of excrement inside it and the logo:
We take your shit and dump it untreated in the sea. The ten water businesses of England and Wales.:D

The "Top Tips" do it for me. I've got several favourites, but this one sort of sums the whole thing up:
A handful of angry wasps in a cigar tube make an ideal emergency vibrator.

I saw this thread yesterday and thought about adding to it but what to I add? I have loved Viz on and off since the late 80's, with great stuff like 'Rude kid' 'Tranny Magnet' and so many others its hard for me to remember the best. Then last night down the pub I went for a piss in the urinal and it reminded me of a fave 'You never miss with armitage shanks'.

I saw a one-off story in it recently called, "Fireman Fritter - He's Got Twitter Up His Shitter"
That made me laugh so much I had look online and found this on a google group.
"After a recommendation from a friend, I bought the latest issue of Viz
(three fucking quid!!!).
The main reason for the purchase was for the strip "Fireman Fritter - He's
Got Twitter Up His Shitter". A fireman is distracted from his job by
constant "tweets" from Stephen Fry, which come out of his arse on ticker
tape."
It sounds so good I'm going for a copy.

The Drunken Bakers are my particular fave at the moment. I can't really explain why but there is something about it which appeals. I suppose the inevitability of the shop exploding 'cos they're wankered rings certain bells maybe. As for Top Tips I think my all time fave has got to be either "Soil lasts longer if you dip it in Vinegar" or "Worms are easier to sharpen if you freeze them first". Also, as a 1 off strip, "Zipp-O-Lightning" was fucking genius. Anyone remember that one? "OK Fuckflaps, I'm taking you in!!"

New issue came today - yay!
Drunken Bakers is amazing - it's like Becket. And it's really sad. 8 Ace as well - he tries, but he can't give up the ace. It's tragic to see him try.
The stories - the best of them - beautifully paced, as well: and the artwork is much better than it has to be.
One of my favourites was The Fat Slags' comment on the recession (not this one - the last one): Walking around (in their winter boob tubes) on New Year's Eve, looking for a party to gatecrash: "At one time on New Year's, there'd be a pile of vomit on every front door step. Terrible now - there's nowt."

I always buy it if Mrs Brady is in it - especially when she discusses her bowel movements - "Eeeh it were like oxtail soup! Or the time "me uterus came away from me womb at the bingo and they had to burn the seat!"

Anybody remember the "Day in the life of" series a few years back. Loved the firemen one, where they spend most of the day going out with blues and twos on to get take aways, eating the food in the mess room then watching porn.
The cartoonist (no - artist) who did those captures smug expressions beautifully and is the same who still does the Jack Black ones.
Cockney Wanker is another favourite.
Glad Tabler posted Doctor Poo. Didn't that win a poll as best Viz strip ever.

I've got all the annuals from the start right up to The Last Turkey in the Shop which contains up to volume 161.
Don't know if there are any after that but must check as they are hilarious.
Favourites for me are 8 Ace and Grassy Knollington.
Thought the sketch where 8 goes into Patels for his usual and finds the cans have gone up to £1.50 was brilliant. Must be 8 Ace not 7 Ace as Patel tries to sell him 7 cans for £1.49.
Best Top Tip was " Always fart into the gas rings on top of your gas cooker. This will turn back the meter and save you pounds over a period of time "
I don't have too many ol' copies.., maybe a few annuals
but the old pulp is still in one piece so here are half a dozen scans I just made from Issue 32 - Oct/Nov 88

I haven't bought it for years but it was hilarious. My favourites were Mr Logic, Roger Irrelevant and Major Misunderstanding
Oh and Victorian Dad was pretty funny too - usually each adventure would end with him unable to contain himself any longer and indulging in some debauchery
The one-off strips were good too. I remember one about 'bum-faced goats' or something?
Anyway, found these on my computer, bit small but just about readable if you squint:

But most of the strips were comedy gold. As mentioned before Finbar Saunders was a favourite...." I'll put this up your mothers back passage" and Roger Mellies idea for a new game show "Celebrity Bumholes".
Another great character was Nobby's Piles "Oooo my aching grapes" and "My Chalfronts are half playing up" :)

01-16-2011, 09:31 AM
I stopped reading it for years and thought, 'it's not as good as it used to be', and sometimes, 'it's just not funny anymore'... how wrong I was on both counts. I went to stay with friends and imagine my surprise when I found they had a stack of Viz piled up, rather fittingly, by the bog. Well, my morning ablutions were all the better for it and I found myself nipping off to the loo at various intervals when I didn't really need to go (this was also the case when I was a student and a brighter spark than I, in our shared student house, thought of the tremendous wheeze to stick a load of jazz mags in a magazine rack by the toilet).
Anyway, I've become a regular purchaser of Viz each month for the last three years and I love it, it's one of the few certainties in my life at the moment (that and VEF amongst a few others) that provide me with some welcome light relief while everything else is miserable and shitty.

They often used to do a "one off" story on page 2 (perhaps trying out possibles for future development)
One of my favourites was one called "Doctor Poo" which had a Tom Baker style doctor wandering the universe in the Tardis looking for somewhere for a crap whilst being pursued by Davros and the Daleks
He finally achieves his aim and emerges with the immortal line:
"I'd give it five minutes Davros"

Wow, Viz.... That's a long time ago
Coming from abroad, I was completely flabbergasted by the style of Northern women. In the midst of winter still wearing short skirts and high heels, legs blue of the cold and drinking like crazy. This is why I loved the "Fat Slags".
As a student from abroad, trying to get a bank account in the UK proved to be a nightmare in the 1980's. That's why the parodie of a NatWest advert really got me going on Viz: Left school, no job, no money? Then Fuck Off! GnatWest, the Frank Bank.

You'll be reassured to learn, then, that nothing has changed and if anything the drinking culture has got worse (or, I suppose, 'better' depending on your viewpoint lol!). As a Softie Southerner, I remember being genuinely shocked when queueing in a Chippie in Derby in the mid 80's one evening for the first time, and seeing people buying chips and gravy/currry sauce/mushy peas/sweet and sour sauce. I asked my companion if that was their evening meal, and she replied "Every evening, for some." Genuine culture shock.

What typified Newcastle most, the characters in Viz or the characters in a certain town center night club known locally as Jurassic Park?
Is that place still going?

When younger I once got so drunk that, having missed the last train home, I tried asking the police for a lift home
The reply being along the lines of, 'no, we're not a bloody taxi service'
There are plenty of 8-Ace type characters round my neighbourhood. They go from one end of the main road to the other asking everyone - literally everyone - for a spare 50p. I'm sure it's definitely for a phone call / the electricity meter / food for the baby, and that they don't go to the first off-licence the moment they have enough for a can of Special Brew

a couple of things that amused me from the latest issue..
From Letterbocks,
Facebook isnt working today so I was wondering if you could let me use your letterbocks page to tell my 213 friends that "Cheese on toast with brown sauce rules-LOL".
Thanks in advance, its important that they know these things.
And from Top Tips...
Potatoes wrapped in tin-foil and kept in a cupboard become a welcome consolation snack if your house burns down.

Is that magazine still around? I used to be able to pick it up at my local newstand for awhile back in the early 90s but that was just a trial thing and he stopped carrying it. I miss the Fat Slags and Biffa Bacon. Are those still in it?
