Even though I'm a massive Iron Maiden fan I have to agree that for the title of Greatest Band Ever you'd find it hard to top what the Beatles did.

You have to pick The Beatles, no question. Excellent composers, "the most thoughtful utilization of instruments" (quote Lemmy) and look at the amount of work.
Imagine what they would sound like if they had had the possibilities of digital recording and 21st century marketing. Wow!

The greatest band in the world? The Band: Messrs Robertson, Manuel, Helm, Danko and Hudson. Even Clapton wanted to join them. Jagger flew home from the U.S with a copy of Music From Big Pink, touting it as the greatest record he'd ever heard. He wasn't far wrong there.

I'll argue forever about what was their best LP (CD) -
But, yep, it has to be The Fabs.
Don't forget, if the Mop-Tops hadn't have come along,
It would have been left to Cliff & The Shadows to conquer the World.

THE BEATLES.

- Four major singers.
- Great creativity in their compositions.
- The adding of non tradicional rock & roll instruments (sitar, mellotron, clavinets and a large etc) and etnic music as well.
- The contributions of a great musical producer (George Martin).
- First band to record with a whole phillarmonic orchestra, just as an element to elevate the songs in a musical way.
- The way Ringo held the sticks and his single stroke patterns, as well as being the first drummer to play in a high level stage, was adopted by many drummers, and his influence continues till now. Phil Collins said that there pieces of Beatles songs that are extremely hard to play due to their drumming technical difficulties.
- The way Paul reinvented the bass playing.
- The way George played just to improve the songs, despiting any need of being a frontman lead guitar player.
- The way John elevated his compositions to higher levels than his conteporaries songwriters.
- The "before and after of" Sgt. Pepper's.
- They were the prototype of a Rock and Roll band.
- The long hair as a rule in rock.
- The way a whole generation was identified and changed with their music.

That were only a few reasons to be the best band ever. Their influences were (and still are) musical and social. They were nice, yes, but talking about music, Beatles are insuperable. There have been and there are many great bands in the world, in a wide range of styles, rock & roll, symphonic, progressive, hard rock, world music, but The Beatles took a part in almost every style (just remember "All my loving", "Can't buy me love", "Eleanor Rigby", "A day in the Life", "Helter Skelter", "Tomorrow never knows", "Within you, without you".); maybe many of those bands, without disregarding their work, wouldn't be that great without Beatles' musical precepts. The Beatles are a major influence in music, not only rock styles, today, and it will be for a long time forwards.

Best regards to you all.

It's nice to see someone else touting the Band. I listed them on the "Most Underated Band" thread.

UK= Led Zeppelin
US= The Eagles (very narrow margin over Earth, Wind & Fire).

However, if you look at quality of work over time is has to be The Stones, IMO

Some of you knew I would have to chime in for the best concert band ever. And that isn't to take away from my love for the Fab
Four or Led Zepplin, and yes the Eagles and the Stones. Actually, there are just too many that could wear the crown well so I'll stand by Pink Floyd.

From a personal perspective, either The Jam or Pulp, in that the music of those two bands and their message is something I can relate to more than any others. They were also both fantastic bands, by any standard :D

The Beatles are a no-brainer. But these are the bands I would put as runners-up:

CCR (about as great as rock and roll can get, shame they broke up so soon):

http://www.bungi.com/sigi/images/ccr2.gif

Rolling Stones (the only possible challengers to the Beatles, but still second place in my mind):

http://www.morethings.com/music/rolling_stones/images/rolling_stones_with_brian_jones.jpg

Velvet Underground (the only thing avante garde about them was their image. i've always thought they were one of the great rock-pop bands who produced tons of instantly accessible gems. they should have had tons of hits if they had been properly promoted):

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/420134/The+Velvet+Underground.png

Beach Boys (along with CCR and the Velvet Underground the greatest American rock band):

http://www.realcrash.com/images/beach-boys-to-tent-city.jpg

The Band (legend rests on only two great albums, three if you count Bob Dylan and The Band album. they were either great or boring but their great stuff is mind-bogglingly excellent):

http://theband.hiof.no/band_pictures/band_mfbp_back.jpg

The Kinks (the most idiosyncratic of rock bands):

http://pds3.egloos.com/pds/200707/12/14/d0032514_03073458.jpg

The Clash (maybe the last truly great rock and roll band):

http://www.1251mag.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/clash2.jpg

Allman Brothers Band (40+ years and still great even without Duane):

In terms of pure musical influence for years to follow it would be Steely Dan or Earth, Wind & Fire. Or Prince (but that really isnīt a band, is it?)

Regarding being iconic for their own generations I would say The Who, the Pistols and the Chilly Peppers

Oops... too many names already

Certainly, the Beatles had the greatest impact on the music business, and I have been a huge fan of theirs since 1964.
However, I'd have to call the Rolling Stones the greatest band ever. It's because of their sheer longevity, and the fact that they've never suffered a drop in popularity in fifty years of performing.

Beatles - Obviously.

Where would we be without them ? Like trying to judge Rock without Elvis, Chuck, Bo , Little R or even Bill H

Like trying to judge modern jazz without Charlie, Stan or even Dave B.

Or swing without Miller or Goodman?

Beatles obviously

They re-sold 'proper' music back to the USA and a whole generation in the US rose up and responded, thank God. Because we wouldn't have had Joplin, Jefferson, Moby, Ramones even Blondie (whose heart was in the right place).

Taking the Beatles as obvious, in my argument........... I tend to go for self-writing and self defining bands.

The Kinks

Beach Boys

BUT...........

.........if ever there was a Band that evolved and influenced as much as
The Beatles. It's an American band. The first multi-racial band in the USA in the 60s.
Busted, jailed, dead or found God. This band had it all. Preffered to rehearse and play locally whilst sitting on contracts and not doing the 'rock band scenario'...they gave The Doors their resident gig at Hollywood's 'Whisky-A-Gogo" to write and rehearse and probably smoke and rehearse....

The best writers, the best attuned band.
My favourite all time Band, with writers as good as Lennon-McCartney in the McLean and the irreplacable Arthur Lee.

RIP my friends.

For mass appeal, influence, and relevance has to be The Beatles, agreed. The simple, classic songwriting compositions are peerless.

The Rolling Stones get the the vote for their longevity - still going strong and filling stadiums worldwide! Of the two, I preferred the Stones for being more badass rock and roll. Ironically, the Beatles were too, but Epstein 'cleaned them up' and packaged them.

But my Best Band is Led Zeppelin for pure, raw, energy, power and grace.
Plant's voice was otherworldly, Page was am absolute wizard with sound and technique (in my top 3 guitarists), Bonham was an unparalleled powerhouse on the kit, banging out some of the most complex funk driven rhythms, and Jones was no slouch on bass and organ. The forerunners of metal.
Check out the DVD (live shows) - no-one will play shows like this ever again!

At the heart of all these bands were the writing teams - Lennon/ McCartney, Jagger/ Richards, and Page/Plant - but let's hear it for the unsung hero, the extra member, without which there would not have been as much 'creativity' - the Drugs! Let's hear it for the drugs.
I am not advocating drug use - I do not indulge myself - but would any of these bands have been the same bands we are all nominating here without them?

For rock has to be the Jimi Hendrix, then Zeppelin, the rest fall far behind those two , But for musical influence I would agree the Beatles , they wrote some fantastic songs.
