This threads for asking those questions that are currently bothering you , ones that need to be asked because if you don`t get the answer you might have to do something serious to distract your nagging brain and itchy tongues tip , like some actual bloody WORK
Questions can be about almost anything (Forum rules permitting) from long forgotten child stars ,to how close would i be from Jupiter if i was on the moon ?. You can ask about that beloved chocolate bar which suddenly vanished from the shelves , or that favourite show you just remembered you liked and which never reappeared . See no matter how tedious it might seem to others if the answer to your question is bugging this be the place to ask for that calming answer , as in "HEY" this is "YOUR" piece of mind we`re talking about ok !.
Now for me (Well you expected as much right :o ) it`s concerning a Sci Fi show which was on a couple years back if memory serves , it was an American show about government created electrical discharging sea creatures which had escaped and were breeding . Doesn`t sound that dangerous i know but somehow that meant the earth was going to flood , in fact the last episode had this major flood which wrecked the town. Had a chunky guy who was trying to find his brother ?, some long haired hot female professor and a kid who had one of the creatures as a pet , only it had bit him and now he shorted out fuses or something.
Alright it might have been an odd series but i liked it and used to eat mighty meaty pizza and get drunk while watching , hmmm so maybe i have rose coloured specs on ?.
Either way i can`t remember the name of the show , or what happened to it
So any help along those lines would be greatly appreciated

Surface was not renewed after its one season because it was crap. I know because I watched it. (Don't ask why, until I saw GreenSkull's post I had mercifully forgotten it.)
Next question: What ever happened to actress Heather Paige Kent?

Hey I've got the Surface DVD box-set. I remember reading some of the publicity beforehand and was very excited as I have a great collection of sea-monster movies on DVD. It started off fine but was one of the greatest disappointments of the last few years as it deviated away from the main plot and threw so many curved balls and alternative plot-lines that it was hard to see where it was actually going. I guess that didn't help the show's survival.
Talking of TV science-fiction what about the Bermuda Triangle based show The Fantastic Journey with the late Roddy McDowell and the stunning Katie Saylor? I haven't seen any repeats of this for decades and Katie Saylor who was taken ill whilst they were filming has disappeared off the scene.

I used to get a British comic in the 60's and I cant remember the name, but one of the storys/characters was Billys Boots about a kid who was crap at Football untill he wore an old pair of Football boots that belonged to 'Dead shot Keane'
Can anyone remember this, if so what was the comic called?

Many thanks for the titles name and all the extra info reiver58 , nice one . Also a hearty cheers go to all the other contributors on this thread :D .Especially DT for his well thought out opinion which has made me inclined to remember the show even more fondly than before :p . Plus in answer to your question Heather Paige Kent disappeared because she took time off to have a couple of babies .Which was convenient really as she`d found herself at a bit of a loose end after her "That`s life" show was finally put out of everyones misery ,oh and casting agents no longer gave her those call backs :D

lol, i had a comic in the early 80's that had billys boots in it, "tiger and speed" it also had hot shot hamish in it amonst others. iirc, the comic split and it paired up with another comic (eagle) that had the mekon and dan dare in it!

I'm also trying to remember a 70's kiddies show that I used to watch - featured folks travelling through time I think, and I seem to remember their time travelling devices were on their belt buckles ? Fairly sure it was an American show ...

Whatever happened to PJ Sparxx ? , last time i saw her was in the early nineties in a film whose name escapes me (But then this thread is for missing memory gaps) .She was riding a condom wearing guy in the woods, looking quite overweight and with a bit of a bad boob job .Not that it detracted from her beauty i may add, anyway i know she retired and probably due to the risks involved with her then career plus the aging process .But does anyone know what she`s meant to be doing now , i mean apart from laying low .
Whoops might have answered my own question there , then again i live in hope :D

Common sense. There used to be a couple of really cool stores in this town. One was a vintage toy store, the other was a book store. They both closed down because they couldn't afford the rising lease costs. They have both been vacant for months. Couldn't someone have been smart enough to either lower the rent, or at least let them stay until they had new renters lined up? As it stands, people are out of work, the property owners are sitting on two empty buildings and two cool stores are gone. Makes no sense.

What ever happened to accountability? When we screw up,it's some disorder we got because we saw our grandma's boobs when we were 5. When we fail to manage our money it's the governments fault, and demand they bail us out.Meanwhile, the government grows more and more unaccountable for it's own actions.

Erm...shops, you know the small ones within walking distance, they all seem to have vanished. The goverment in this country constantly repeats the mantra that the big supermarkets are creating employment and work opportunity; no they f*****g ain't, the mega-marts just shut every other poor b*****d down.
Now if you want anything you have to get in your car and drive bleeding miles. So much for saving the planet and you have to battle your way through Mr fat-lardy b******d and his equally obese wife and offspring in flip-flops.
I hate Tesco's....I mean I really hate Tesco's.

What ever happened to accountability?
Brown today quoted that famous phrase from the Truman era (the ex US President not the Jim Carrey movie) The Buck Stops Here.
Let's see whether he understands it now.
School leavers who cannot read and write or violently mis-behave probably have more to do with trendy but inept teaching methods than to some imaginary attention deficit disorders. I knew I was crap at Physics as I just did not get it, consequently I got crap marks, which I accepted as being an accurate reflection. Nowadays my 10/15% would probably get me some kind of diploma. Why are we so afraid to recognise that we cannot be good at everything?
On another note, I see the odd Betamax items but where did all the video 2000 tapes and machines go to?

Simo - Sorry, dozy Bovon not articulating properly. Kelly Monteith played in a series of sketches in his BBC TV show (as far as I remember), and within those sketches etc, his 'wife' was played by Gabrielle Drake (an actress) who in 'real life' is the sister of the 1970s folkie(?) Nick Drake - 5 Leaves Left etc.
Hope that helps clear the confusion up? ;):)

Quality control in the minds of TV program commissioning editors ?
I've just discovered i have an attic in the flat i`m renting and while nosing around the web encrusted place i came across some amazing superhero print pint glasses wrapped in newspaper dated 1989, which had a guide page that only helped remind me (If it was needed) just what a poor state our current television standards are in.
Couldn't believe it , the schedule was full of decent educational children shows and grown up documentaries (BBC 2 had an excellent sounding one on Stalins former head of secret police Beria) .There were old comedy classics like Bilko and Steptoe, and newer quality imports of Cheers and Married with children. BBC 1 was showing 1946`s The Big Sleep that evening . While CH4 had on a late night showing of The Awakening of Annie. There were no brain dead repeats to be found ,and bugger all reality rubbish / quiz shows / cookery crud or celebrity based dribble.

The show used to be ITV before the ITN News. It was made by Thames Television, and there were occasional appearances by Rover 2000 police cars belonging to the Metropolitan Police, nice cars which never saw real service but were the preferred image for TV drama purposes. I rather liked The Tomorrow People although I didn't follow it religiously. The special effects budget was, ahem, modest:rolleyes: and this certainly showed, but in spite of that, it was original, inventive and intelligent. They spend a lot more now to churn out absolute drivel.
The show was cancelled after 5 or 6 years in 1979. It didn't have a bad run really, and nothing is forever except Coronation Street:(.

It famously featured a young Nicholas Lyndhurst in Nazi uniform, also Mike Hollaway who was the drummer with Flintlock (those of you from my neck of the woods and age group may remember Flintlock,if not let's just say they were a poor man's Bay city Rollers!)

I'm sure something happened to ice creams also, undoubtedly in their bid to save a buck in manufacturing.
Sure I'm older now and my tastes may have changed, but many of the manufactured ones had distinctive luscious chocolate and unique rich creams.
I'm guessing brands and names may differ internationally, but how many Aussies remember the original Choc Wedge, Heart, Two In One, Cream B'tween and Eskimo Pie, the latter also being available as Cherry flavoured.:p

Right on GS. Everbody talks about rights but no one talks about responsibility. Here's the responsibility game: the true role of government is not to govern but to be a responsibility dump, responsibilities people dont want get off loaded onto government. But 'government' being the amorphous mass it is responsibility is so diffuse that no one's responsible for anything. This way no one can be blamed for anything. If you want to be free you have to be responsible, if you don't want responsibility you cant be free.
Education.
The liberal education system where everyone gets to pass (unless they really cant be bothered doing a minimal amount of work). It doesn't matter that by the time the kids get to Uni they still can't spell correctly and have a minimal grasp of grammar. Some Uni's now give remedial english courses, that's how bad it's become. I imagine that sooner or later 'mobile speak' will become acceptable writing simply because it's ubiquitous.

Must have been before the late 1970's as the first episode of Hazell had him being hired to collect debts, as did several other episodes in the first season.
He must have been in really Dire Straits then.

Hey Wendigo, glad you remember Marker.
Yeah, Marker used to collect debts, I know, but it was usually just the hook into a story where he'd go broke or waive his fee to help his client out. Above and beyond the call of duty, if you know what I mean. Hard to reconcile todays 'boys' with Gentleman Frank.

As we all know, the very best Queen's English is spoken in rebel circles, especially Georgia and New Jersey.:D:D
Yeah, but, he said..."Well Im just going to don my flat cap, stick some Whippets down my trousers and take the Ferrets for a walk.
Oh and if its winter and just below freezing I might wear a T-shirt.
Oh and on the way back I might hew out a coal seam!"
Whippets and flat caps and ferrets and coal seams? What the hell, scoundrel! Yes, but what does it all mean, Basil?

Its complicated, brian, but I'll do my best...
Yeah, but, he said..."Well Im just going to don my flat cap, stick some Whippets down my trousers and take the Ferrets for a walk. OED/Websters translation: I shall wear my stereotypical 19th Century North of England factory workers' clothing and take my stereotypical North of England caged animal pets for fresh air and exercise.
This is not a traditional North of England sterotypical cloth cap.
http://img263.imagevenue.com/loc115/th_78440_Baseball_cap_122_115lo.jpg (http://img263.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=th_78440_Baseball_cap_122_115lo.jpg)
This is a stereotypical 19th Century North of England cloth cap.http://img179.imagevenue.com/loc63/th_78441_Traditional_cloth_cap_1_122_63lo.jpg (http://img179.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=78441_Traditional_cloth_cap_1_122_63 lo.jpg)
and this one was in vogue up to the 1960s.http://img127.imagevenue.com/loc1121/th_78442_Traditional_Cloth_Cap_2_122_1121lo.jpg (http://img127.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=78442_Traditional_Cloth_Cap_2_122_11 21lo.jpg)
The Northern love of ferrets was practical. They are excellent hunting animals (rabbit stew) and superb for dealing with rats and mice, even better (and cheaper) than cats.
But ferrets are not cute:
http://img182.imagevenue.com/loc374/th_79219_Ferrets_are_not_cure._122_374lo.jpg (http://img182.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=th_79219_Ferrets_are_not_cure._122_3 74lo.jpg)
Ferrets do not wear cloth caps, even if their stereoptypical North of England owners wear them: http://img259.imagevenue.com/loc466/th_04663_Ferrets_do_not_wear_cloth_caps_122_466lo. jpg
Like their North of England owners, ferrets are plain snarling, no-nonsense business-like animals who get on with the job.http://img154.imagevenue.com/loc42/th_79220_Ferret_122_42lo.jpg (http://img154.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=th_79220_Ferret_122_42lo.jpg)
As for whippets, they were the poor man's race horse: even a hard-up miner or factory worker liked to go to the races for a drink and a bit of a flutter: http://img253.imagevenue.com/loc53/th_79588_Whippet_2_122_53lo.jpg
But as with all gambling, it could easily be the road to ruin, hence the phrase; ''It's gone to the dogs now'', which could be the answer to all lot of ''whatever happened to'' questions on this thread.
Oh and if its winter and just below freezing I might wear a T-shirt.
This refers to a region of North East England called Tyneside, regional capital Newcastle, from which region 'Geordies' originate. The stereotype here is that Geordies have alcohol when everyone else has blood, so they do not feel cold, fear or pain. When the ambient street temperature is below freezing and the windspeed is 10mph or more, Geordies celebrate their superior constitutions by wearing white/Newcastle United tee-shirts and training shoes, while their girlfriends wear short skirts and high heels on the same principle. Any resident of Newcastle who wraps up warm in these conditions is disgraced and has to move to London.
This youtube link refers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFoRHWw2Dp0
Oh and on the way back I might hew out a coal seam!" Coal mining was a traditional economic activity of Northern regions, much mis-prized by southern softies of doubtful sexuality who had a phobia of honest work or getting their hands dirty.
Whippets and flat caps and ferrets and coal seams? What the hell, scoundrel! Yes, but what does it all mean, Basil?
See above.
Hope that helps, brian.

Thanks so much scounds, for your effort! I really love to learn about your culture, seriously, and I've learned so much on this site. I know what a whippet is, but I'm still not sure why you would want one down your trousers, though. That video on Geordies was hilarious...they remind me of our real Yankees, way up in New England, New Hampshire, Vermont, etc. A tough and hearty breed. I've heard Geordies mentioned by Mark Knoppler before, but didn't know what they were until now. Anything you want to know about Jersey or Georgia, I'm here for ya, buddy! Not that you would want to know anything about Jersey or Georgia, but if you do..I'm your man! Yeah...I'll be waiting. For a while, I imagine. Yep. Really fascinating, Georgia, we've got trees, and stuff. Yeah. Boy, that's good stuff. Yeah. Trees, and land, and all. Yep. And rednecks, of course, we're just lousy with them. Yeah, trees, and land, and rednecks. Yep. Somebody please kill me.

If i remember this rightly i believe his wife became very ill in the late nineties and then passed away , which was meant to have sent him into a deep depression and so he retired from acting to concentrate on raising his children . Oh and of course getting treatment for his depression :(
Shows no signs of coming out of retirement either , as he recently turned down the chance to co-star in ghostbusters 3

What ever happened to my support hose? I remember them being here, but I can't find them to save my life. My wife "cleaned up" the other day, I hate when she does that. She goes through the house like a white tornado, sticking shit everywhere, then when you ask her..."what did you do with my underwear", she says..."I don't know, look in the top drawer". Then you look in the top drawer, and guess what? No freakin underwear! Afanabala! She hasn't the faintest freakin idea where she put anything, don't even ask. But she did it fast! Those support socks were over $20 a pair, but I'll never see them again. I would have worn them for the next twenty years, but she probably thought they were too old, and threw them in the garbage. I think I'll jump in there myself, one of these days. Jeez.

Rant over..deep breath.
Move to our valley. Lots of corner shops, no need to go anywhere near such evil places. All the basics readily available within easy walking distance plus any you might need if you feel like a good scratch-built curry. Which for me is often. Going onto the more traditionally British side of things there's this butcher. Again in easy walking distance which sources all his beef from a herd of Aberdeen Angus from a farm in the next valley. You see right in front of you thick, tasty rib-eye steaks cut fresh off the bone.
Don't get me wrong Tesco and the like to sometimes sell good things. With fresh produce the problem really is that by the time you pick it up and put it in your basket more often than not it's nearly off or in some scientifically devised stage of decomposition which is deemed fit for human consumption. Which means that more often than not by the time you actually feel like eating it's nearly inedible and so thrown away.
That's the problem with supermarket chains. From the time you enter the car-park to the time you leave you're cynically manipulated and exploited with all the tricks that psychology and the other sciences and arts can provide.

Yes i know that , i mean why did he stop acting and clear off for 30 odd years ?. Maybe he suffered from "oh bugger, how do I top THAT syndrome". You work your way up to becoming an actor, then star in arguably the defining science fiction film of your generation and then what? Who can tell. Or maybe he took truckloads of acid, as one did in the late 60's and subsequently for every audition he attended afterwards suffered flashbacks in which a calm rational voice at the back of his head said "you can't do that Dave"...

Perhaps with 2001 people regarded it as just another job, not realising just how huge the film would become? On paper at least, it sounds like just another slightly trippy 1960's sci fi fest.
"Well there's these astronauts, see, and a computer, that talks, and it takes over and decides to rule the world <pauses for deep herbal inhalation> <coughs> and there's this black monolith and it's like all trippy and stuff, and then they go to Saturn or Uranus or somewhere and everything goes all mad and your main astronaut becomes an old man and then a baby and stuff".
Keir probably read the script and thought "hmmm, easy enough paycheck, and let's be honest, no one's going to want to watch THAT so my anonymity is assured..."
But then of course Mr Kubrick got behind the cameras and everything fell spectacularly into place ;)

Poor bugger , he thought he`d found a role in a small indie space pic and so make that months rent and keep his privacy. But it all blew up in his face. No wonder he sought sanctuary in village theater products of mother goose for thirty years
Three scenes make that film .The one where the ape goes ape and throws the bone that drops and turns into the spaceship. The bit where it becomes apparent HAL can lip read and of course "Daisy daisy ". Also the classical music snippets , but then that`s more like the garnish i guess

About 10 years ago I was working for a catalog company and got an order from a customer with the last name of Dullea. No, it wasn't him, but when I confirmed the spelling of his name and pronounced it correctly, he was taken aback. The customer said it was one of the few times the name was pronounced correctly. I casually mentioned that I assumed it was the same pronunciation as the actor, Keir Dullea. He claimed that Keir was his uncle. He told me KD had some drug and alcohol problems but had turned his life around and had been sober for many years. He could have been feeding me a line, but how many people have you run into with that last name?
I know that Dullea is hitting the convention circuit. Last year he was at Wonderfest, an annual science fiction/fantasy model building convention.

Single did nothing of course as she was pretty rough to look at and couldn`t sing worth a damn, mind you that never stopped the spice girls did it .

As it's Guy Fawkes Night here in the UK, I'll ask whatever happened to those youngsters who'd make a 'Guy' out of some old discarded clothes, stuffed with rags and old newspaper, the head made from an old football, the arms and legs from cardboard tubes - all this would be placed onto a hand built trolley and carted off to the local High Street where a suitable position would be found and those famous words "Penny for the Guy, Mister" would be asked to the passers-by.

I can hear brass bands playing and I can see a young boy wearing ankle boots and going hell for leather with his legs outstretched down a steep cobbled street. ;).
Small boys in the park........jumpers for goal posts?
Now I shouldn't eat sweets as they are just empty calories but these are two bars that I miss.
1 The Aztec bar, it was like a big Mars bar but tasted better
2 The rum and raisin bar, you got two individually wrapped fingers of rum and raisin in gold foil within a paper wrap.
3 Mint Cracknel, chocolate with suicidal sharp pieces of peppermint brittle inside. They tell me this is still made in South Africa.

I thought his song about the randy bantam cock was brilliant.
Do you remember as a kid going on the swings or roundabouts in the park until you came off giddy?
Or hot summer days when you were playing outside and running so hard or rolling down hills that you could feel the pulse in your own head and your heart thundering away inside your chest?
I was thinking about sweets and all the cheap sugar things we had as kids like those polystyrene flying saucer things that melted in your mouth and had sherbet inside them, but I was in an old fashioned sweet shop in the town this afternnon and you can still still get all these things, cola drops, pear drops, boilde sweets of every type. I used to eat so many boiled sweets that the skin used to peel on the roof of my mouth. No wonder I have so much metal in my head now.

Don't remember Aztecs having fruit in them.
Still on sweets, my favourites were Mint Cracknell (probably no longer in existance due to health and safety measures, as I remember, they were made from shards of candy and I remember many an injury), Texan bars, Old English Spangles (amazing flavours, I think they made a comeback, but not with the original flavours) and Stroodles (?). The last came in an apple shaped pack and were little peices of apple coated in chocolate (if I remember correctly).
Let's not forget Old Jamaica chocolate bars.

I'm also trying to remember a 70's kiddies show that I used to watch - featured folks travelling through time I think, and I seem to remember their time travelling devices were on their belt buckles ? Fairly sure it was an American show ...
Maybe it was called "The Tomorrow People"? Just before setting off on a trip they'd say "Lets jaunt". I only ever watched one episode, the one where some 'balloons' followed people about and jumped on them and became their new clothes. I remember becuase in one scene the oriental looking member of the team was laying on a table with what looked like a swimming cozzie on and I thouhgt she looked quite sexy. This was a british prog.

Joy was in one or two scenes of the comedy series "The Thin Blue Line" and she's the malteser-stuffing sexy minx before and after the ad breaks during "Loose Women". She 'pole-dances' in one bit, wears a swimming cozzie in another, and wears a bikini top in another. She did a shoot for FHM or Loaded or Maxim, but only one photo is any good.
I used to really fancy Joanne Ridley. I did see her in one episode of a kid's tv series about a cylce-courier company. She wore tight pair of shorts and her legs were glorious!

I just remember them being like a Milky Way, but different.
Article by Ruth Mortimer in Brand Strategy:
'Cadbury's tribute to the inventors of chocolate lasted ten years. The Cadbury Aztec--named after the ancient Mesoamerican culture thought to have first used cocoa--was introduced in 1968. By 1978, the bar was itself consigned to history.
The Aztec was a chunky nougat and caramel bar, not unlike the Mars Bar. Mars had launched in the UK in 1932, and dominated a massive chunk of the confectionery market. Cadbury had no direct competitor to the chewy bar and its catchy "A Mars A Day Helps You Work Rest and Play" slogan. So it launched the Aztec bar with advertising featuring a bunch of costumed actors on Mesoamerican pyramids.'

Marks & Spencers special Christmas chocolate mousse ?
They last had it in Christmas 2006 , but since then nada.
For those who don`t know it was this big solid plastic bowl of amazing tasting milk chocolate mousse , the really thick kind that you can`t find anywhere nowadays.
Unless you make it yourself of course , but who`s that gay ? ( As in overly joyous).
Anyway so it had this amazing mousse and at the bottom really sweet fresh orange segments. The whole thing was topped with whipped cream , plus that was then topped with thick (Again) orange segment shaped and flavoured pieces of milk chocolate
They always used to sell out really quick so i made sure i bought three that year , little knowing that it would be the last time i got the chance to taste it .
Why`d they stop selling it ?.
Not even as if they replaced it with something better , as for the last three years all they`ve sold are flamboyant looking cheesecakes , profiteroles cakes and cheapo quality (But not priced) mousses
Arrrgggh i hate M&S

I used to get a British comic in the 60's and I cant remember the name, but one of the storys/characters was Billys Boots about a kid who was crap at Football untill he wore an old pair of Football boots that belonged to 'Dead shot Keane'
Can anyone remember this, if so what was the comic called?
It sounds like it could be the comic strip "Look Out For Lefty", which, believe it or not, had overtones of "Steptoe & Son." Lefty lived with his old man in a junkyard, and, if memory serves me right, that is where he found the boots. The comic may have been "Whizzer & Chips", but not 100% certain on that.

discipline! Kids today need a good clip round the ear, never did me no harm. And bring back the cane in schools.
Sorry, have to disagree on this one Billy, I went to a sh*thole of a secondary school when corporal punishment was freely available and having being on the receiving-end of the cane, which I will repeat because I feel strongly about this.
Myself and about ten other boys were 'caned' across our hands for, and I quote: 'Running on some loose stones'. At the time, I was escaping a roughing-up, usual sort of fare in a crap school, but for this, the headmaster broke a cane over my fingertips. The pain nearly made me vomit, I'll never forget that feeling, also the reaction of my compatriots ( the look of their faces was just fear)
He then went into his office and brought out about ten more canes and nearly broke the fingers on the other boys.
When I grew up and got bigger and stronger, I often wondered about going around to that c***'s house and doing exactly the same thing to him in front of his wife, to see how he liked it.
The reason why they stopped using corporal-punishment in that school was the fact that the pupils in the end decided they were'nt taking that sadistic sh*t any longer and two teachers had the crap kicked out of them.
As far as I'm concerned, they deserved everything they got.
Isn't the Catholic church in a spot of bother over abuse of children at the moment.
You remember good teachers... and you really remember the bad ones.

Well, nowadays the pupils have the upper-hand. I was caned many times; yes it hurt but it did me no harm. The catholic church is in bother at the mo due to sexual abuse, which is a different subject. Don't forget the teachers today who are beaten and abused. If a child got a clip round the ear these days their parents would be filing a law suit instead of telling them off. And the reason corporal punishment was stopped was because of an EU law. Not a pupil rebellion.

Sorry to be pedantic but it was a ruling in the European Court as a result of action taken by British children. The Court which was set up by the UK in the aftermath of the second world war, is based on our common law and pre dates the EU by several years and it has nothing to do with the EU. It just annoys me that our 'wonderful media' continue to peddle the myth that they are one and the same, not to mention being anti British, when they are not.

Fortunately I only went to an inner city state school where fear of a beating in yard exceded fear of a caning by the teaching staff.
However, I did notice that the worst teachers with the lousiest control and teaching skills were the first to reach for the cane. Teachers with presence and authority never seemed to need that crutch.
Secondly, I have read many autobiographies of the great and the good who went to posh schools and boarding schools, some first division and some conference league level and the brutality of what they endured from Monks and religious Brothers makes me wonder if this was some form of a closset sexual abuse.

Corporal punishment has been replaced with chemical control. Maybe we should call it corporate punishment? I read about one teacher who had 60% of her class on ritalin. Cranking out drug addicts is not what the school system is meant to be. Got a problem? Reach for a pill! Better living through chemicals! I'm sure the pharmaceutical companies love the profit but what is the real cost to us as a society? I'm against corporal punishment but I'm against chemical control even more. More children act out because of boredom than anything else. Better teaching methods and changing the curriculum to reflect our modern society may hold their attention better than a bang on the ear.
My two cents.

Indeed, indeed, my friend!
I'm not for corporal punishment per se, but sometimes punishment is warranted rather than a "time-out." I'm not now and never want to be a parent, so maybe I shouldn't talk, but I see my sisters go through this crap with their kids. In the seventies when we were still kids it got trendy for parents to explain why the kid wasn't allowed to do this or that. This led to endless explaining and negotiating. We hated "because I said so," and "that's the way it is," but it got us to put our energy into something more constructive than being a jailhouse lawyer, which is what my sisters' kids are!
"Hey, you're just a kid. You don't know how the world works. This is for your own good. Etc. Etc."
It took me well into adulthood to realize most of those old cliches are true.

I remember when saccharine was outlawed in the states because it might cause cancer, you would have had to drink over 500 cans of pop a day to increase your chance of getting cancer by a small percentage. You'd drown before you got cancer.
It's incredible. Food additives which miniscully raise the chance of getting cancer are outlawed in a heartbeat, but tobacco is still legal.

Snap, I had a cane broke with the impact on my fingers from a sadistic sh*t of a headmaster as he assaulted 10 of us for running on some pebbles! Major infraction.. As I grew older and stronger I sometimes thought about going around to his house and doing to him what he did to me in front of his wife.
One of the reasons they got rid of the cane in our school was because some of the bigger lads decided enough was enough and when threatened with corporal punishment told the teacher if he proceeded he would have the crap kicked out of him. Some teachers didn't listen to that advice and suffered the consequence.

I used to have the orange coloured version way back in the late nineties. I used to like the taste as well! Basically it was a mix or Irn-Bru (remember that) and vodka and was 5.5% (stronger than most lagers at the time). WKD now comes in several 'flavours' and it's alcohol content is down to 4.5% and is now a favourite among the 10 year old set, I kid you not -
From today's Metro,
http://www.metro.co.uk/news/856226-schoolgirls-aged-10-name-alcopops-as-their-favourite-drink
Got to start them early to get brand loyalty:rolleyes:.
Back to topic - whatever happened to those 1970s lolly ices - Cider and Cherry Brandy flavour (not together of course). No alcohol in them, but they were bloody tasty! They were usually the cheapest thing on the van. You can't seem to get them any more.

Gimme the good ole Monaro and Torana any day.

Mitsubishi has been less successful than most in this area.
Their aggressively-named sports car came out as the Mitsubishi Starion when it was supposed to be Mitsubishi Stallion.
Pajero is a rather unfortunate name as well, don't know how that got through. Obviously they didn't have a Spanish-Japanese dictionary.
Another miss was the "Carisma" when they should have called it "Dull As Dishwater".
They also came up with the Mitsubishi Lettuce, clearly they were on a roll.

Nah, it was "Scorcher".

News journalists who give a shit about things other than how well their jackets fit and whether their teeth are sufficiently capped .You know those other things, such as their actual job description. Which is to surely not accept at face value everything they`re told , to dig for the truth and counter false claims with reasoned pressing fact based arguments. They say the first signs of democracy is a free press. But what have we here ?. Journalists that promote the propaganda of the powers that be. Journalists that don`t bridge a gap between them and us , they just side with them against us
We live in an age where the media doesn`t just muddy the waters it builds a razor topped wall between us and the truth . Journalists  Whores to a man the lot of them , especially the grinning giggling women

I hear most of these at least fairly regularly. Of course, I work at home, so I hear "good morning" mainly from my wife. And if I'm getting up at 7:00p.m. it's a "good morning" that sounds pretty sarcastic...
Not much occasion for me to hear "please" any more. I don't have kids, and I don't have co-workers to want to borrow stuff.
Now, "thank you" I hear a pretty good amount in the real world, but not enough people hit the Thanks button here.
"Excuse me" I never hear. If I do hear it, it's from another guy who's bumped into me (while I feel to make sure my wallet is still there). Women never say "excuse me" to me, even if they run over my foot with a shopping cart. Moreover, because I'm a bit, shall we say, large, they seem to think that I'm taking up too much space everywhere I walk. Someone has apparently told women (especially attractive ones) that it's okay to glare at complete strangers who haven't done anything malicious to you.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.
R.I.P.

I haven't a boddington what a boddington is blatt, old chum, but if it is as i suspect then i may have an answer, if not for now, then later.
I have a friend that has made his living for many years from renting initially video tapes and now DVD's, as well as retailing the cheapest cigarettes in town.
Rather than upgrade all his stock to blu-ray, something he expressed a reluctance to do as apparently they damage easily, not to mention online viewing, he has gone into home brew kits in a fairly big way, along with various spirit brewing kits.
I don't really know how it's panning out for him. He has enough money invested elsewhere, so i believe the shop is really just a hobby.
He did get into it around the beginning of the economic recession, which i strongly suspect will be back and with pubs becoming more and more unfriendly, i'm sure he will build a client base.

In the United States it has been legal to make your own beer since 1978. A lot of people have taken advantage of that law to form microbreweries and sell their creations, which is legal as long as you get a license. Like anything else, getting a license is easier in some counties than in others.
The microbrewery fad has died down a little, but in the 90s and early 2000s it seemed like people were so obsessed with buying beer that had a tiny little production that they didn't really care what it tasted like. It became a very snobbish thing to buy beer from a guy who only turned out a few cases a week... As a non-drinker, I just stood back and watched, amused. People will always find an excuse to pay more for something that is readily available, confusing rarity for quality.
Now, making hard alcohol, that will still get you in trouble.

Unless I'm mistaken, i believe he's selling something for brewing (top shelf) spirits as well. Although i think it's a chemical thing, maybe, that you have to add an essense of flavour to. I could be wrong about that too.

As i promised before, i dropped into my mates shop yesterday and he's definately selling 'top shelf kits' - whisky, bourbon, scotch, rum, vodka, ouzo, tequila, etc. You name it.
Although he went into his sales routine, i didn't take notes.
I don't really understand the principal. I'm sure a simple online search would explain it.
To my uneducated understanding you brew something akin to pure alcohol? (that can't be right, as it'd kill you).
Then you add a small amount of 'flavour or 'essence', as it's called on the bottle.
I tried some Jim Beam brewed this way a couple of years ago and that particular 'brew' wasn't as good as the original. And at $500 for a basic stainless steel 'still', without the other parts and ingredients i don't think I will be attempting my own anytime soon.
Kinda nice to know the option's there for those that want to though.

True enough fellow member, but at least he never sanctioned drone strikes on American citizens.
That still freaks me out
Almost as much as Barmy then claiming he was a bad man so got what he deserved , yet then didn`t show anyone the proof of that claim:confused:
Which in my mind still wouldn`t have justified dropping a bomb on the guys head ,so taking out a quarter of the street he was living in :(
Whatever happened to ???

Oh wait i forget that`s exactly what they are doing .

Just a short detour off topic, but really...comparing Bush to Obama?
He inherited a royal freakin' mess, and has done incredibly well, considering the insanely staunch resistance from the Republicans against everything he has tried to do.

Yeah keep living the dream man keep living the dream , doesn`t spoil ma Grits any :D
So keep snoring as the reality of what he said he wanted to do , what he could have done if he had of really wanted to do what he said ,and what he very quickly did do instead ain`t none to pleasant a bit of information.
In other words let`s just say no wonder the likes of JP Morgan (Thank`s for not prosecuting us merely for breaking the law) , Goldman Sachs (Ditto, plus cheers for all the hundreds of billions ) and the arms industries (Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb , come on now , everybody , bomb bomb bomb) etc etc adore him so much ,and have continually contributed to his campaign so so so much. In fact so much they dwarf the amount any politician in your country has ever been given before.
Guess it`s purely because they love his smile huh ? ;)

I fixed it for you. Now I'm no big fan of Bush; he mostly did nothing for 8 years. But Obama? This idiot is commander-in-chief of our military and won't salute the flag! He's personally responsible for trillions of dollars of debt we can't afford, and even though he swore an oath to defend the constitution he's tried to subvert it ever since taking office! He Should Be Impeached And Tried For Treason ! I hope I'm not being too subtle.

Well, Obama was just yesterday considered as the fourth greatest president in US history, besides FDR, Johnson, and Lincoln, I think it was. His polls are back up to around 50%, also.
Talking about "trillions of dollars" of debt..that's totally unfair and biased. Most of that was already in place from the Bush administration to start with. The rest was mainly trying to avoid the next great depression. Very unfortunate, but necessary.
And you surely can't call Obama an idiot with a straight face, can you? Come on, now. Really? If you think that, it doesn't speak well for you.
This man has had more accomplishments than just about anyone during his presidency. Most of his failures as a President has been due to the stubborn, dumbass Republicans, like the Orange Asshole speaker of the house Boehner. Moron.

I`m not exactly sure who this post was directed to , but i don`t think him an idiot.
Simply a man who professed to have principles unlike his predecessor . Yet turned out to have even less regard for the bill of rights that Bush and so i find him the worst kind of hypocrite . Or aren`t you aware of the National Defense Authorization Act that Bama mama will no longer veto, despite it containing provisions that allow for military detention without trial for US citizens. Detention as in indefinite.
Mind you nothing surprises me about him anymore , or even disappoints me .
He is what he is.

The episodes haven`t been shown for decades due to the guy on the left believing the guy on the right had spoken out of turn to the media over thirty years ago. When in fact he`d done nothing of the sort and was a victim of journalistic exaggeration . Still you know how some cnuts can also be tossers ?, well that`s James Bolam for you. A total tosser who to spite Rodney Bewes has refused to allow any episodes to be shown. So depriving the long since semi blind, semi deaf and full on broke Bewes of a small fortune in residual fees.
But then that`s tossers for you :(

What ever happened to phil cool , the stand up comic who used to pull all sorts of weird faces . Also what ever happened to kelly monteith he was massive back in the late eighties on the bbc but disappeared.
Phil Cool was "discovered" by Jasper Carrott whilst he was touring on the stand-up comedy circuit. Phil had a cult following through his TV shows (I used to have the series on VHS). Unfortunately Phil suffered a heart attack about 15 years ago. This put an end to his performing career. There were rumours a few years ago about a possible come back but it never materialised.
Kelly Monteith was an American comic who found fame in the UK in the late 70's. He had his own show on BBC2 which ran for 3 series from 1978-80.
When the series finished he faded away in the UK and went back to the US were he stills performs stand up.

I was very surprised and disappointed myself when i found out , never more so once i`d delved more into it a little and found the poor guy (Quite literally) hadn`t even done anything wrong.
All very sad, and "What ever happened!" about giving a friend the benefit of the bleeding doubt :(
Has also taken the edge off another show i used to like with Bolam in , Only when i laugh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGrdm4C6dUE)

She was the very first American P-Star i flipped over , yet suddenly vanished without trace
Something doubly weird given her notoriety and the fact this "Internet" of ours sees and knows all.
Last film i saw her in (Name of which escapes me) she`d really stacked on the pounds, although that`s all to the good as far as i`m concerned as who wants a skinny woman
Oh well i guess as long as she`s happy that`s all that matters.
Though i bet the guy she`s with is happy enough , the damn bastard ;)

No clue what happened but i do clearly remember it .
Mind the late nighties was when Ch4 still had the crazy idea of trying to be a creative and imaginative force of brain expanding good for British television. Sadly that dream died in 2000 with the introduction of Big Brother and all the slurry shite that has since followed.
