Does anybody remeber the St trinian films of the 1950's. Generally the films aren't that good but for anybody who's a fan of black fully fashioned seamed stockings, wow!! :) :)

Ronald Searles first 'St Trinians' sketch appeared in
1941.
During world war 2 he was captured by the Japs and
worked on the Burma railway.
He continued sketching as a POW and hid his sketches under the matress.
After liberation in 1945 he took his sketches home and
got them published.

By 1953 Ronald had got tired of the St Trinians industry and decided to move on.
The following year the movie world stepped in and made a film....
" The Belles of St Trinians " based on his cartoons.

There were a whole series of movies during the 1950s.
In 1966 there was another movie .. " The Great St Trinians Train Robbery "
In 1980 " The Wildcats of St Trinians " was released.

Could that be Maureen Lipman in the middle ?
Finally, late last year 2007 yet another movie "St Trinians " was released featuring a cross dressing Rupert Everett and the lovely girls from the pop group "Girls Aloud."

Just seen the St Trinians 2007 version with Rupert Everett
did nt really work did it ?
wonder what it did in the box office ? 2 mill ?
Can't think that they ever bothered to dist in US ...or did they ?
There was no real glam in the cast and no quality cameo parts like .. Dora Bryan in former times.
A bit of glam finally appeared on screen right at the very end in the shape of 'Girls Aloud' ... but blink and you missed them.
But worst of all... Rupert Everett just did nt hack it.. they did nt even try to glam him up as a woman.. he just looked stupid with that scarf on his head !
The scenes with Stephen Fry and Russel Brand picked things up a little but basically the film did n't hack it.... let down by a weak script ... the girls stealing a poxy painting ....yawn...
Looks like the St Trinians film industry is finally in the scrap yard.. along with the 'Carry Ons' and 'Hammer Horror'..
there ll never be a reprise...
( poor Peter Rogers passed away last week too )
ah well... they had a good run.....

Let's be honest - the St. Trinians films are all pretty dire.
But worth sitting through once just to catch an occasional glimpse of the older girls like Dilys Laye (remember her?!) flashing their suspenders and showing their fully-fashioned stockings.

On the 'honesty' trip I'd admit they now - as an adult - appear dire, but as an adolescent watching them on school holiday kids tv - remember that - they were superb! That glimpse of stocking tops and suspender belt was as close as we got to smut - until we got the bottle to walk into the newsagents and buy a wank mag - but thats another story!

Strange to think what starts off these Movie and TV series...
for Doctor Who... it was HG Wells and his novel
... The Time Machine...
For the Carry On movies it was a TV show... The Army Game
For St Trinians it was some cartoons a guy drew whilst he was
being held prisoner by the Japanese in WW2
For Hammer Horror... not sure what inspired those guys...
was it Quatermas on the telly ?

The guy you refer to is Ronald Searle
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Searle I just wonder what the authorities would make of it today-a middle aged man drawing anarchic sketches of schoolgirls-and quite possibly making look a lot sexier-he actually drew them in cartoon form with big eyes, glasses and Beano-style comedy but the way things go these days and the sort of ANIME style(big breasts and shapely legs) thats around I think it would be unacceptable in this country at least. I think the idea that six formers wore stockings and suspenders was probably a device he disproved of but when I got to my sixth-form it was nothing like those shapely six-formers-damn it!!:D

Sabrina seemed to make a career from flaunting
her boobs... even way back in the 1950s ...
(how did she ever get on the holier than thou BBC ? )
great casting for St Trinians... but blink and you ve missed her
( a bit like Girls Aloud in the 2007 version )
I think I read Ronald Searle's biog and from what I remember he seemed to be
looking down on the Brits and sneering at their
page 3 culture.
In the end he upped sticks and went to live in France
a far more cultured nation.

Too right the b/w st.Trinians were the best I think it's what got me into uniforms/ black ff nylons ?
The early films were a bit of a pastiche of Britain with the class references . Alister Sim &George Cole were outstanding as Miss Fritton/Flash Harry. The sixties colour one with Frankie Howard was the begining of the end infact he saved it from a totally abysmal script. The last film linked on this thread well the least said the better.

I've always liked Alister Sim. He had a wonderful droll and sinister presence, and was apparently a really nice person which is nice. He even turned down a knighthood because he did not want anyone to call him sir!! Just for the record I will snap the Queen's hand off if offered a knighthood :) then again I'm not as nice as Sim.
The thing that stands out about Sim's Miss Fritton is the femininity of the characterisation. Sim does not play her as a pantomime dame, or as camp, but as a genteel, slightly criminal, lady. Beautiful work. It reminds me of the actress who played a male photographer, you don't see the character as anything else as a man; Fritton is a woman who is simply played by a man...which is unusual.

Alistair Sim was a genius in the same way that the late Sir Alec Guinness was in creating believable characters-witness this in the marvellous dark comedy "Kind Hearts and Coronets" where he plays seven members of his family. Sim is brilliant also in "Green For Danger." Joyce Grenfell like another brilliant comic actress since died Irene Handl played a lot of characters where you could believe it was someone else and not her-nearest to that these days possibly Maureen Lipman who did some of Joyce's monologues on stage. I personally didn't like the St Trinians films, because I don't like that sort of knockabout comedy however the glimpses of Sim as Miss Fritton were funny. I also think it was wrong to remake it, even Wildcats of St Trinians was dire although lets face it the site of Debbie Linden(Mavis) in black stockings and suspenders and Luan Peters-skinny dipping were the only highlights.
I don't remember the scene but I have since seen a speeded up version of Margaret Nolan(Vicky Ireland) doing a striptease which was of its time-I wonder who those films were really made for? Certainly not family viewing I would say.

I much preferred Julie Alexander's two little strips in "Pure Hell". One was as a harem girl which turned me on to belly dancers big time. The other was peeling out of period costume while reading Hamlet - how bizarre is that? The film always cut away when getting to the good bits though. Very frustrating - I've got the clips somewhere...
Its Gerald Thomas not Peter and Peter Rogers it was who died last week.
Peter Rogers, the producer, died a couple of weeks ago aged 95 - he was married to comedy movie producer Betty Box - Gerald Thomas, the director, passed on during the mid 90's

The films were very much "of their time". I love "The Belles of St Trinians'" - the first one - a wonderful send-up of post war education system.
The latest one - a brave idea I thought - really showed how things have changed. There was always two types of St Trinians girls - the younger pre-pubescent ones - who were scruffy, scheming and extremely violent and the "sixth-formers" all sexy stockings and glamour. Nowadays knives (and guns) in schools are a real issue and you're made to feel like a paedo for finding the school uniform look attractive (however mature the person in it). Not wishing to address those taboo's, the film didn't really have anything left to skit. (It's a shame we NEED films to send up this mad country. "Carry on Banking", "Carry on Spinning" etc etc)
Don't know if this has been mentioned in the thread but St Trinians was based on a real school (spelt St Trineans). What a delicious thought! It was in Edinbrugh between the wars and adopted "unorthodox" methods. The philosophy was that every child should be left to find something they were good at and encouraged to pursue that. A breath of fresh air from constricting "one size fits all" comprehensives and National curriculum etc.

Some of those photos originate from my old St. Trinians group especially the sixth photo (that I mentioned) which I scanned 7 years ago.
Sorry for the centre seam on the magazine page but I didn't have photo editing software at the time. If anyone is interested the photo was scanned from an issue of Woman's Own in 2002.

Some of those photos originate from my old St. Trinians group especially the sixth photo (that I mentioned) which I scanned 7 years ago.
Why so small images?
Do you own larger scans perchance? :D

When I was 9 or 10 I would see these films in the local cinema on a saturday afternoon. The odd thing was ,I hated the bits with the adult schoolgirls but loved the parts with the younger girls because they would get up to mischief and all sorts of scrapes .
Whizz forward a couple of years and my preference changed. I knew then why my dad gave up his valuable drinking time to take me to see them. And I thought he was just being a caring parent.

The only large scan I have is the magazine scan I did (sixth photo in that list)
Unfortunately I don't have larger scans of the other photos...they were the same size on my St Trinians group where Beezer maybe got the photos.
I'll find the magazine scan and upload once I find it.

Got there in the end. Here are the two clips that I promised of Julie Alexander strutting her stuff.
Very mild compared to some stuff here, but it certainly made an impression on me as a young lad. I remember thinking, "if only I could see what the audience were seeing..."

The films were great of their kind but meaningless I would imagine to anyone under fifty. They belonged to their time and place, an age of deference and when authority in the shape of teachers or bureaucrats was going to be challenged but not yet. They work only because one could never act or think in those ways then. It is worth remembering hanging was still being carried out and National Service was mandatory and television news readers wore evening dress after seven o'clock. Every teacher in the land had a cane, slipper or belt to threaten or actually use. It was time when "toilet" could never be said on the B.B.C. The later films – from the "St Trinian's Great Train Robbery" onwards are frankly awful. The presence of great comedic talents such as Sim, Grenfell, Handel and Cole carried the films when I saw them in later life. Younger, it was something else entirely.

I have to admit that it was a girl at my school who's family took the case to the European court which lead to corporal punishment being banned from schools. Now look where we are, its the school kids are carrying knives.
I agree with much of what danton says. But basically, they were kids/youths films, not aimed at an adult audience. The younger ones enjoyed the controlled defiance of the teachers. Every kid would like to get one up on the teacher. The older viewers, mostly male, enjoyed the older girls and the stocking tops.
Kids today do defy authority in more extreme ways than the St Trinian's girls ever did. And who cares about stocking tops when kids are sending each other pornographic SMSs.
Just heard a news report this morning about growing concerns over girls being bullied into taking naked pictures of themselves on their mobile and sending them on.

I saw an ad on a bus for the new movie and one girl caught my eye. Turns out she is Gabriella Wilde. Not much of her out there (only one entry on imbd), but I did find this. The other girls are Tamsin Egerton (centre) and Clara Paget (right).

Nice sexy pics of the new style St Trinians girls. I do love the opaque stockings over the fishnet tights look but nobody can beat the original St Trinians girls with the fully fashioned sheer black stockings and suspenders of the 1950s and '60s.

Back in the seventies (that's the 1970s not the 1870s) our school used to give us a christmas treat by getting out the projector and showing us all a movie in the main hall. One year - Guns of Navarone. Another year - one of the St Trinians films with Alastair Sim and George Cole. Black and White but we loved it.
The past really is another country isn't it...
Someone mentioned Green for Danger on this thread - that's my favourite Sim performance. A very fine comic actor.

I can't agree with the first part of your post at all. This lot are pale, "ohmygod" imitations of the originals, and they do absoloutely nothing for me whatsoever (remove those uniforms and you'd probably see bald beavers, tats and pierced navels).
The second part of your post however I wholeheartedly endorse.

I am struck by how horny these girls in stockings are (as seen in blue murder clip) without apparently trying, as they go about their tasks. A modern film would have girls strutting about and posing.
I guess that FF stockings were normal attire in those times albeit a little more covered up.

I recently had an entertaining evening viewing my St Trinian's films on DVD. Ah! The nostalgia!
I am firmly of the opinion that only the first three films really caught the mood. From "The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery" onwards it has been downwards in my view.
I re-read some comments and contemporary reviews. The one that caught my eye was one for "Blue Murder at St Trinian's". I noted that Sabrina was given very full billing, despite appearing very briefly (mostly) covered up and certainly not like this:
http://thumbnails41.imagebam.com/16385/a584e8163840463.jpg
(http://www.imagebam.com/image/a584e8163840463) http://thumbnails18.imagebam.com/16385/f7f0cc163840467.jpg (http://www.imagebam.com/image/f7f0cc163840467)
Sabrina was at the height of her fame - chiefly for her bust and blonde hair at a time when Jane Mansfield only had to step out doors to start a riot.
Wikipedia says this: (edited by danton)
Norma Ann Sykes (born 19 May 1936), better known as Sabrina, was a 1950s English glamour model who progressed to a minor movie career. Her main claim to fame was her hourglass figure of prodigious breasts coupled with a tiny 17" waist. Sabrina had a natural waist-hip ratio of 0.47, from the waist measurement of 17" and her hips at 36" when she first started modelling, although she deliberately filled out in later years when advised by several model agencies. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Sabrina was called: "The British Jayne Mansfield".
Born in Stockport, Cheshire, she moved to London in 1952 as a sixteen-year-old, and did some nude modelling, the evidence of which she later tried to destroy...
She made her motion-picture debut in Stock Car, in 1955. She then appeared in a small role in the 1956 film, Ramsbottom Rides Again. In her third movie role, Blue Murder at St Trinian's (1957) she had a non-speaking role in which, despite sharing equal billing with the star Alastair Sim on posters and appearing in many publicity stills in school uniform, she was required only to sit up in bed wearing a nightdress, reading a book whilst the action took place around her.
Her penultimate movie role was in the horror movie The Ice House (1969), as a replacement for Jayne Mansfield who had died in a car crash two years before. Her last film was a year later in the western, The Phantom Gunslinger (1970) where she starred alongside the late Troy Donahue.
In 1967, she married Dr Harold Melsheimer, a Hollywood plastic surgeon though they divorced ten years later. She currently lives in Hollywood.
Just what the other "girls" made of having to 'doughnut' Sabrina for publicity stills is anyone's guess.
I close with one photograph montage that inadvertently demonstrates the truth of my opening remarks better than I can. The age of women's tights destroyed my youth! Thankfully, I have my memories and the DVD's to remind me.

Very sad news.
A great artist -from the depiction of monstrosities in the prisoner-of-war camps, to the many but all beautifully drawn post-war cartoons, not least St Trinians itself
I'm a great fan of the Launder and Gilliat 50's films myself. They had immense charm which sadly the modern versions fail to capture. I could never quit- work out why there was never a stage in between first year monster tearaways and stocking-clad upper year girls. But that was all part of the fun.

Very sad news.

Searle's drawings of St Trinian's School do just pre-date his capture at Singapore. The overwhelming content of the work he produced as a P.O.W. (at risk of instant death at Japanese hands) was to record the appalling treatment of Allied soldiers. Searle's post-war views on this episode are worth reading. He worked on the infamous Burma Railway (a.k.a. the Death Railway) and witnessed brutality and elaborate cruelty at first hand. It was from his recollections that I learned that there is no bridge over the River Kwai; and that many, many more Burmese were killed building the railway than Allied P.O.W.s (roughly 5 times as many).
His biographer makes some interesting parallels between the drawings Searle made of Japanese-inspired horrors and later St Trinian's drawings. St Trinian's as conceived by Searle is much darker, more openly sadistic, than the subsequent films. I think this wartime episode had a profound effect on Searle; perhaps it was always part of his character, but his ability to distance himself from reality created the sense of a man somehow detached, which disturbs me for one.
Like Sardax, I am a great fan of the first three films. The Sixth Form are delicious, the Fourth Form dangerously precocious and the central cast heroes of British film history: I delight in Sim's performance, Grenfell's genius for timing - watch her when someone else is speaking the dialogue; many young actors' could learn from her. As a portrait of a society waking up to a new world, to my mind the ethos of these films is superbly right. Actually, things were not so rosy at that time, but as cinema goers then we revelled in the prospect of well spoken venial crooks running a posh school and figures in authority made to look foolish at a time when B.B.C. television and radio (!) announcers had to wear evening dress after seven o'clock and the Queen went into hiding when 'expecting' her children.
Searle appears in one scene at the end of the Belles of St Trinian's as a parent pacing Miss Fritton's study.

Just a little background info: the girls themselves were originally based on the pupils of St M@ry's Convent school in Cambridge. Whilst an art student at the old Cambridge Art College, Searle used to sketch 'cartoons' of the girls who used to play netball in the quad beneath the art school windows.
For any Searle fans the collected drawings are available in:
'St Trinians - the entire appalling business'
pub by The Rookery Press (2008) ISBN-13: 978-1-58567-958-4
I agree completely with the comments regarding the first three films; the first (The Belles of...) is easily the best imo, with diminishing returns thereafter. The great Alastair Sim is sublime as Miss Fritton and I think the St Trinians films were made partly following the successful L & G adaptation of 'The Happiest Days of Your Life' which transferred the stage play to the screen. This featured Sim as Wetherby Pond, the head of Nutbourne College, a school about to reluctantly share occupation with a St Swithin's girls school, under the headship of the magnificent Margaret Rutherford. For those who enjoy Launder & Gilliat comedies, it's a little classic, with Sim at his very best.
