I do realise I am asking for trouble posting such an opening question.

SO

this is NOT a question about crazy people or testicles.

This is a question about nuts - nuts that grow naturally upon the planet, i.e. natural nuts ;)

me? I love cashew nuts - they are the best!

What nut is your fav?

There are no nuts in the botanical sense but I like Almonds - and marzipan! http://bestsmileys.com/drooling/3.gif

Hazelnuts. For two reasons alone:

1) What has a hazelnut in every bite? Thick milk chocolate for your delight? Nougar and caramel gold and light? And... Don't forget the hazelnut in every bite!

2) Nuts whole hazelnuts. OOH. Cadbury's take 'em and they cover 'em in chocklit.

Sorry, got a bit nostalgic there for a moment ;)

Seriously though, Lidl's own dry roasted peanuts. Cost about 30p for half a hundredweight, and like avidfan said of his, are far nicer than the more expensive brands :)

I don't actually like hazels that much tbh. They're small, brown, wrinkled and bitter. And if anyone wants to add a punchline to the last comment, feel free :)

Right enough of dancing round the contentious issue , let`s roll our sleeves up and get down to it .

I say Brazil Nuts are the best as they contain by far the most beneficial nutrients, plus are particularly healthy due to their high selenium content, which makes their protein content "complete". This means that, unlike the proteins in most plant products, Brazil nuts' proteins contain all the necessary amino acids to foster optimal growth in humans (in the same way as proteins from animal products do)
Selenium is also a powerful antioxidant linked to lower rates of cancer and heart disease. Brazil nuts are also a very good source of zinc (essential to digestion and metabolism) and an added source of protein. These nuts also contain high amounts of fat , but these fats are unsaturated and therefore "healthy" , although not so much the way i eat them which is why i`m currently blessed with "Weight"

"SO I`M FOR BRAZIL NUTS , WHO`S WITH ME !!! "

Personally I prefer 3/4 inch chrome Lug nuts...

One interesting thing about Brazil nuts is they only germinate in the rainforest...plantation crops are barren of the true nut which are the size and weight of a cannon ball. What we call the nuts are packed inside the big carrier nut.

Biologists found that a very small native bee uses the brazil nut tree flower as a smell communicator with the other bees in the colony. The Bees only live in the rainforest and they're the only insect that routinely travels between Brazil nut trees.... no rainforest, no nuts!

That's ok slowdriver - you brought back a long forgotten memory :D

Unfortunately, I've had that jingle stuck in my head for days now  but I can hardly blame you for that, my friend ;) :)

GreenSkull, I'm not taken by brazil nuts - Anytime I've bought a bag of mixed nuts, the brazil nuts are always last to be eaten. The fact that they are eaten shows I have nothing against the nut itself (it's not personal, like), it's just they're not up there with the top nuts.

Let's suppose you have a mixed bag of Olympian nuts - they're all there  & this is the 100 meters. The Final.

(Don't ask me if it's a salted bag of mixed Olympian nuts or a non-salted bag, that is an irrelevant question, a bit like asking what kind of running shoes are these Olympian nuts wearing? ... :D )

Here's my winning order.

1. Cashew

2. Walnut

3. Pistachio

4. Pecan

5. Almond (We'll have no nutism here!)

6. Peanut

7. Coconut

8. Chestnut & Hazelnut (It's a photo-finish for 8th & 9th places)

10. brazil nut

Thinking back to schooldays, does anyone remember Chewing Nuts? Not actually a nut at all, they were the bargain basement end of childhood confectionery. Small, round bullet hard caramels coated in the cheapest chocolate imaginable, they took on a whole new lease of life when shoveled into your mouth at least a dozen at a time. Sucking the nuts (steady now) for about a week and a half caused them to slowly soften, at which point a magical transformation took place, and they became the bestest toffee in the world :)

Ah memories.

Get your nutcrackers out. ;)

I've always had terrible problems cracking nut with nutcrackers. I carefully place the nut in between the teeth of the crackers and squeeze the lever - CRACK! - pieces of shell and nut fly halfway across the room and I have to spend the next 15 minutes rummaging through the furniture and scrabbling over the floor picking up the darn bits! And what's actually edible is negligible. :(

Only minutes from me is one of the self-proclaimed peanut capitals of the world. Actualy, China and India produce about 50% of the worlds peanuts with the US providing a modest 10%. I used to hunt on a farm where the landowner grew many an acre of peanuts for hog feed. Harvest time was especialy nice, getting the freshest peanuts possible to take home and roast myself. Delicious!

My second favorite would be Cashews. Lastly, Brazils.

I think if you travelled through most of the southeastern United States (other than Florida, the orange capital) you'd find a "Peanut Capital" in most every one of them. Mine happens to be home to the Planter's Peanuts company, established in 1912. I guess they felt safe to claim a peanut capital title for that association.
