Brilliant post my friend. :)

You are right those guys are giants.
Sadly I never got to see Bill live.
Recently watched a lot of his stuff,
including the documentary of his life.

Rodney - No respect. That guy must have
introduced me to more young comedians than
I can remember in his 80's show young comedians
that was on HBO. Rodney introduced me to
Bobby Slayton, Jerry Seinfeld, Bobcat Goldthwaite,
Rita Rudner and my man the legendary Sam Kinison,
among the many of young up and coming stars.

Gilbert - I'm sure you knew that he was college
room mates with none other than, the Dice Man.

Well I was fortunate to see Sam Kinison twice live.
Both times in the San Francisco Bay Area, and he
was as awesome as ever. That guy changed my
life about comedy, I loved him so much. Had his first
few albums, and all the standup video including the
infamous Saturday Night Live hosting where he
appeared with Seka.

After he died, I spent a year in silent screams.
(Quiet versions of Sam-imitations) In honor.
Then, after a year or so, I went over to the dark side.....

Little Boy Blew.....he needed the money. :D
The master of Mother Goose nursery rhymes, Andrew Dice Clay.
Loved his performance at Madison Square Garden, New York.
Top o' the world, ma. I followed him for a number of years
but unfortunately never saw him live.

Thanks for your thread Greenskull.
For some of us in life, if we don't laugh, we surely will cry.

Now here is the guy I grew up listening to, Wally Londo himself, the Hippie Dippie Weatherman.....

George Carlin May 12, 1937 - June 22, 2008

http://img24.imagevenue.com/loc773/th_93737_georgecarlin_K_123_773lo.jpg (http://img24.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=93737_georgecarlin_K_123_773lo.jpg)

George Carlin was a comedian that made me laugh since I was a kid.

Ever since I was about 10 or 11, that guy was something else.

My brother and I had the albums "Class Clown"

http://img231.imagevenue.com/loc340/th_94367_88262_123_340lo.jpg (http://img231.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=94367_88262_123_340lo.jpg)

and "Occupation: Foole".
http://img245.imagevenue.com/loc433/th_94411_main-205_123_433lo.jpg

These albums ended up being classics in the history of American comedy.

His legendary 7 words you can't say on TV didn't go over well with my
step father and mother. Funny to look back on that.
He released them on Class Clown.

He grew up in New York and was a teenager in the 1950's.
This often worked well as reflection, and a springboard
for comedy pieces for little boys to relate to, such as his youth
in Catholic School in the 1940's. Those bits are unforgettable to me.
His version of the New York accent was hilarious.
The Bronx Cheer, the Raspberry, even the artificial fart under the arm.

The guy was a king when you were little. He had been around for years
before we heard of him. I don't even remember where we heard of him from,
because he was like a hippie (a.k.a. the hippie dippie weather man) and we
were just kids. I know he was in trouble with the law a lot.

http://img179.imagevenue.com/loc17/th_95389_georgecarlinmugshot_123_17lo.jpg (http://img179.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=95389_georgecarlinmugshot_123_17lo.j pg)

Years later his 7 words actually benefited some law for free speech!
http://www.acsblog.org/news-and-announcements-george-carlin-19372008.html

Then when we got older and started doing sports, this was the bomb:
George's legendary bit on Baseball and Football
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/humor7.shtml

His performance in "Bill & Ted's Excellant Adventure",
and "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" was stellar and he stole the show,
dwarfing the two stars of the film with his brilliance,
portraying Rufus, who's motto was "Be excellant to each other".
(Actually laid out by the ancients Bill & Ted themselves.)
He had appeared in a number of films and TV appearances.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0137506/

I only got to see him live once, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
By then I was an adult and he was a senior citizen.
The crowd gave a standing ovation, and encore.

Some quotes by George Carlin:
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/g/george_carlin.html

George most likely wants us to look back
on his life and think of the great laughs he gave us.
I would like to laugh when I look back on the
life and times of George Carlin, a real class act.
As well as class clown, occupation: foole.

Although this is by far my favourite brilliant Gilbert video clip , and as usual it`s totally off the cuff with his only pauses being to dart his eyes to see if his camera is still rolling , well did you think he`d ever pay anyone to actually film him ? :D

Many thanks for that friend Trip and outstanding contribution by the way , i thought it was maybe about time this section had such a thread especially as these headliners more or less created the footprints other comedians have since tried to follow in.

Erm who knows maybe this thread could even become a sticky ? :D ? :D ? :D

http://img234.imagevenue.com/loc137/th_35424_arts2_123_137lo.jpg (http://img234.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=35424_arts2_123_137lo.jpg)

Never had the privilege or opportunity of seeing the Legend Carlin ,Rodney Dangerfield or Sam Kinison . But i have watched Gilbert Gottfried and Andrew Dice Clay who i even met , although he was a bit out of it. Still nothing beats seeing Bill Hicks which i was lucky enough to do twice , ok something does and that was talking my way into meeting him backstage at Egham , i then actually spoke to him for nearly five minutes eventhough he was in a rush and heading off , oh and i shook his left hand !
Now i`ve most probably told everyone i know about this huge event (For me), although i`ve shortened the story for decency sake as usually i stretch it out for nearly half an hour :o

Even now i still get an overwhemling sadness at his brutally early death , my god`s if only he`d been with us all this time , i mean the places he could have taken us man you know :(

Anyway enough of this and time for another original comic colossal who i got the great chance to see live and also spoke to (Don`t worry this isn`t a running theme), found him as friendly as hell although he was as nervous off stage as he`d been on it , but i got to congratulate him on his work which i think he appreciated more than if i`d just gushed as i sorta wanted to .

The late , yet forever always to be great

GreenSklull ?, now either i`m still hung over or that`s plain wrong :D

Anyway that`s good to know and my pleasure Kiwi , that clip is taken from the awful (In his opinion) 1995 Lee and Herring live video. When he was then in a double act , which was actually a bloody funny double act although i prefer his stand up. Don`t know if you've already found it but this is the link to almost all of his work to date and the guy himself is so damn generous he lets you watch it for free and that`s despite his finances being in a right old mess !.

For everybody who fancies a life increasing laugh , although nothing beats him live and in person :D

Can heartily recommend his two DVD`s also = pure class !

Love most everyone you guys have listed so far, but Rodney will always have a special place in my heart. When I was a kid, I would look through the TV guide to see if Rodney was going to be on "The Tonight Show". If he was, I'd make a real effort to stay up and watch. My favorite Rodney joke is: "I got a new agent, a woman agent. She asked me if I had an 8x10. I said, 'Honey, if I had an 8x10 I wouldn't need the work.'" RIP Rodney. Mad respect.

Is one of those , a giant as in originality ,talent and spontaneity.A master of the character trait ,the rapier , fluent in 99 languages and creator of 98 of them.
Unfortunately in this country that also means you`re pretty much ignored by all media and especially television , as what`s the point of having someone on the screen who might make the viewers think along with laugh right ?.

Which is why when the BBC did eventually commission him to make his own 6 episode series (For the incredibly generous budget of under sixty grand) they stuck it unadvertised on late night BBC2 in a constantly roving spot , then told him to piss off

The show was called The League Against Tedium and it was brilliant , anyway you can`t find it anywhere nowadays but here is the shows title which gives an idea of what it was like

When I absolutly positivly need to laugh..... this is only a list my dear, as I am unwilling to learn the nuances of obtaining or creating clips...
But, the list is..

Rodney Dangerfield (with his physician Dr Vinnie Boom Bah)
Steven Wright
Richard Pryor (with Mudbone of course)
Bill Cosby about childhood and the "pleasures" of raising children.
In the thread would The Python and Benny Hill fit?
Robin Williams
Bill Engvall and the rest of the Rednecks
Don "Mr Warmth" Rickles
The MAN himself Johnny Carson
Redd Foxx
George Carlin from his early years....
Tim Conway & Harvey Corman for their skits....
Dan Rowan & Dick Martin
The Smothers Brothers....

and any bill collector that thinks I can meet his demands.

Over the years I've seen loads of American comedians and with out fail every single one of them did the same thing-SHOUT!! I didn't want my ears assailed by their lunatic ramblings-one of the worst is/was Gilbert Gottfried-he is also in Beverly Hills Cop 2 and yes he shouts-why? Did they think British ears weren't sensitive to American humour? Personally I prefer the old British greats and they are:
Ken Dodd-still around and still funny
Tony Hancock-died 1968
Tommy Cooper-died on stage literally
Morecambe & Wise-both sadly gone
The Two Ronnies-Ronnie Barker long gone, Ronnie Corbett still around.

On the alternative front we had our own shouters like Ben Elton, The Dangerous Brothers(Ade Edmonson & Rik Mayall), The Oblivion Boys(Steve Frost & Mark Arden), Alexei Sayle etc but they shouted because they were angry at 'Mrs Thatch' and by that time so was half the country.
The only comics from America that I liked in their early days were Robin Williams(he once took Parkinson apart-one of the funniest episodes ever) and Jim Carrey when he appeared on the late Bob Monkhouse's funny men show in the 1990's doing impressions of all things.

I have never liked raucous humour at the best of times and sometimes our American friends can be too over the top. Hancock didn't need to shout, he was funny the way he used phrases and words , Tommy Cooper was a natural clown, and that is why I love their stuff even now. I might Steven Wright & Emo Phillips to the list, at least they are quiet but very funny.
For a treat, do yourselves a favour and watch this classic brilliantly funny Tommy Cooper routine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKblP3_EkM0

He didn`t start out shouting ,his stand up character originally was more along the lines of a mimic imitating the pomposity and banality of other comedians of the day. Something he was and to my mind still is a master of. For example nobody has ever shown up Seinfeld`s repetitive limited range before him , and to such devastating effect
No he started to use more of a raised voice for the simplest of reasons, he couldn`t cope with hecklers and the shouting stuck . He figured if he was yelling the hecklers wouldn`t be heard , and he wouldn`t then have to try and come back at them.

Although i think of it more as a loud nasal whine than shouting :D

Me i rate him as one of the best , and like him or not the guy`s never afraid to push the boundaries past breaking point , or laugh at himself and his heritage

many more brilliant dead ones than alive .........

add more votes for the likes of morecambe & wise, ronnie's b & c, & tommy cooper..... bob monkhouse also sadly very underated as a live comedian...!!!!

only living ones i have ears for are dodd & connelly. both different to each other; one a gag meister, the other a story teller...!!!

ill give praise to peter kay for his observations, but hate smug people like gervais, who thankfully died during live 8, proving how totally untalented he is without a script in front of him..!!

so many others could have filled that spot and coped admirably..... even frankie boyle.. tho ill bet he'd have had show taken off air within five mins..!! lol

In my own personal opinion , Frankie Boyle`s about as funny as a colon cancer

Which is something i`d rather have, than ever be forced to see him floundering around on the stage again saying f#ck so many times you`d think he was being sponsored to do it . He spent his set loudly shitting on his paying audience , taking faked offense at the weakest targets and always finding the easy way out.

In other words my review of his live stand up is this = I found Marcus Brigstocke`s stand up funnier .

Yes i agree , never could there be a more damming review !

my point was more to point out how bad gervais was... more than to highlight boyle's 'talents'.... (i say that with a very odd look on my face) ...... boyle was funny, in the early days of mock the week, but he was allowed to go too far, and said some real bad stuff that wasnt funny in the end. his own show 'tramadol nights'..aka... paracetamol nights as thats how bad a headache watching it gave me, was just a total waste of time... not one funny bit, either in the sketches, or his short stand ups......

anyway.... this is to celebrate the good comedians... so lets continue old chap.....
as its "not like that, but like this!" "uhhuh" as dear old tommy cooper would have said..

Just found this thread today and have been laughing my head off. Great stuff on here guys. Some of my all time favorites are already on here but I have to get them some due. Bill Hicks was a man ahead of his time. One of the smartest and funniest guys to ever do stand-up. Richard Pryor is, IMO, the best stand-up comic ever. His jokes/monologues/stories were so highly personal yet so universal. He was an education to my white American middle class brain when I first heard him in the 70's. Rodney is also at the top. I remember seeing him walk on stage to start his set and some heckler, probably one of his cohorts, yelled out: "Hey Rodney...get a job!" Without skipping a beat Rodney replied: "I got a job....gettin' fags for your brother." No, he wasn't refering to cigarettes. ;):):D

Some of my other favorites, although sadly two of them have recently passed away, and with a nod to Greenskull who already posted some of his stuff.

There was a whole genration of comics in the post war period who toured the last days of music halls and working mens clubs. A few lucky ones like Morecambe & Wise transferred to TV (although it took them a couple of attempts) but many more were unable to do so and as the venues got fewer they had to find alternative ways of doing their act.

One of the best was Freddie Sales (1920-1994) who ended up making a good living in Las Vegas as host of one of the early extravaganza shows and writing jokes for people like Bob Hope.

I like people who can make me laugh. So I have saw a good number of them in my years. Mal Hombre mentioned Connelly who I thought was great. I managed to see his live show several times and at his best he would have you peeing in your seat.

There are many more that are and were really funny. Some mentioned on this forum already.

However, I will pick only two that could get me and the audience around me in histerics from the moment he walked onto the stage until he went off. One still living and one sadly dead.

Ken Dodd is a total comic genius. He can keep you laughing without the need for swear words or profanities. I saw him trade jokes with a heckler in such a nice way that you thought the heckler was part of the act. He wasn't, he was a drunken arse. Saw him on tour less than 3 years ago. He still has the audience in the palm of his hand. And before anyone says, his jokes are certainly up to date.

The late great Les Dawson. Was another genius. He actually wanted hecklers. Most of the time he had no act, it was driven by the audience of the day. Very few people could go on stage in front of 1 2 3 thousand people with no script just the ideas when he got there. Nice man, no airs and graces but genuinely funny, on and of stage.

Saw the great Stewart Lee on stage on the 23rd .

Am sure his new act was superb , although to confirm it i`d have to see it while at least semi sober.

Anyway here`s a great bit of stand up from one of his mates.

Honorables:
George Carlin

Henny Youngman

Joan Rivers
Ellen Degeneres

Bob Hope ( for his day)
Redd Foxx
Lois Anderson
Whoopi Goldberg ( early days)
Gilbert Godfried
Elaine Boosler ( spelling?)

Eddie Murphy ( early days)
The Smothers Brothers

There are a bunch of other great acts, but they have not reached the time-tested careers as the above, Like: Lewis Black, Lisa Lampanelli, Wanda Sykes, Dana Carvey, Dennis Leary, Kevin Nealon, Sarah Silverman, Jeanine Garafolo, etc. I loved the outrageous bits of Sam Kinison and Andrew Dice but they're acts were so short lived.

A few years back, Comedy Central did a countdown of the 100 Stand-up comedians; here's the Top 10.

1. Richard Pryor
2. George Carlin
3. Lenny Bruce
4. Woody Allen
5. Chris Rock
6. Steve Martin
7. Rodney Dangerfield
8. Bill Cosby
9. Roseanne Barr
10. Eddie Murphy

I think 1-3 are spot on. Lenny kicked in the door and while everyone was trying to figure out how to fix it, Pryor and Carlin slipped in and it was all over.

Other names on the list were Robin Williams (13), Bill Hicks (19), Sam Kiniston (20), Phyllis Diller (35), Lewis Black (51), Dice Clay (95) and Louis C.K. (98).

IIRC, the voters were comedians themselves. I can see both being that low at the time, but now Louis would definitely be higher. I think Dice is just right, in some ways he was a flash in the pan and some of his act doesn't age well. But I do think he was funny.

BTW, did you know Dice was in an episode of M*A*S*H?

The first time I heard Dice was in 91 or 92, picked up a mate from the airport...He bought a copy of The Day The Laughter Died while in the US.

Driving home down the highway late that night, he slipped the tape into the deck and told us be warned..... Car left the road and I nearly killed us all because of laughing so hard

The Marx Brothers

Jackie Mason
Redd Foxx
Lenny Bruce
George Carlin
Cheech & Chong
Richard Pryor
Bill Hicks
Sam Kinison

Out of the list, probably laughed the hardest and longest (Like Estreeter, to the point of nearly driving off the road) at Sam Kinison. Genius.

Here he is making his second appearance on the David Letterman Show in 1986. Some of it is dated, but if you were alive and aware then, it's still HIGHlarious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj9DdTXxDFU

Well, standup is only one type of comedy. Personally I have totally loved the sitcoms, films, and skit comedies that have come from the Brits. Stand up comedy in the states comes from poking fun at politics, sex, religion etc- things that are more societal. British comics, more than Americans, focus on more intra-personal suffering, which is why, IMO opinion, rock music from England and the UK in general is so much better than ours. Of course there are exceptions and its not my intention to negate or marginalize British entertainment at all, just merely voicing an opinion as to the differences in sources of inspiration. There is great suffering on both sides of the Atlantic, but in the states it is commonly frowned upon to exhibit that in song, or in a hollywood movie ending.

One American comedian who was very popular over here was of course Bob Hope, but if you watch his act his delivery was very British despite the fact that he left here when he was 8.

Just found this thread and haven't really seen many of the U.S comedians mentioned apart from film credits. That is the reason I reserve a dislike for Steve Martin, Rodney Dangerfield and Robin Williams.
If I'm basing my choice on stand-up I'd choose Milton Jones, Bob Monkhouse and Les Dawson. I'm a radio fan by heart and I believe that the wittiest, most intelligent comedian I've ever heard is none other than former Goodie Graeme Garden.
If we were voting for smug comedians it would be a tie between Michael McEntyre and Ricky Gervais. I never liked the office but it seemed to me that Gervais actually believed he'd re-invented comedy.

Nope he actually believes he is funny! Talented and for some reason it became totally socially necessary to pretend you liked the office. When you actually said actually 'I have only watched it for two minutes, I though it was crap!' Most people looked relieved and said to be honest I agree with you. Too many talentless prciks like Gervais seem to sort of get picked up by Radio One, who tell everyone they are wonderful and people are scared to say nope they are crap!

I cannot help but agree,I've said it before (Many times) that Ricky Gervaise is the least funny man in the UK.What I can't fathom is why the Americans find Him so hilarious,Guest spots on "The Simpsons" and a regular spot on "Family Guy"? Why?

Having once been dragged to see him performing stand up (Or i should say a well watered down version of Stewart Lee`s act on stage) all i can think is Merchant was the main brains behind the Office and Extras.
Both shows i must confess to quite liking.

Although not for Gervais`s presence , but for the surrounding cast.
Especially Extras and the superb Ashley Jensen.

Yikes i think Gervais showed his actual talents when he was allowed to write, produce , direct, narrate and act (Cough cough) in that unfunny abomination The Invention of Lying
