View Full Version : Your First Album/8-Track/CD/Cassette Purchase?

I was just sitting here thinking back about the very first album that I can ever remember owning.
I bugged my parents to death back when I was in first grade in 1976 to get me a Kiss album or 8-Track tape. I had never even heard them before but there was a huge buzz about them back then. For my birthday, I received Kiss Alive...the first one. I still have it to this day and still sounds better than the CD version...nothing beats the sound of vinyl.
The first purchase I ever made with my own money was Joan Jett and The Blackhearts "I Love Rock N Roll" on cassette....I still own it as well.
So, what was yours?

Aside from a few budget compilations (20 Explosive Hits, etc) and Pink Floyd's 'Relics', my first full price album was 'The Slider' by T-Rex.
I was suitably impressed by the packaging and production, that it began a lifelong 'habit' of weekly collecting.

I've still got an 8 track in my car but the only fucking cartridges I can find are Neil bloody Sedaka
I still have 8-Track tapes, passed down from my older sister, but nothing to play them on. They are in storage in the attic.
I know there is a few Pink Floyd, Queen, Reo Speedwagon, J Geils Band tapes up there.

It's got both of those -although the "wire wheels" are actually a Cadillac hub cap on an ordinary steel wheel. Anyway I see you're in W Tennessee - I'm sure there loads of these old barges about?
.
Oh yeah...they are everywhere. You see loads of late model 70's and early 80's 4 door sedans on the roads here. Most with wheels 5 times too large for the car and music you can hear blocks away.
This is the Modern World - the Jam (1978) - the first album I bought myself.
As albums go it wasn't their greatest, In the City (1977) was much better as their 1st album. And All Mod Cons (their 3rd album) is still to this day one of my all time favorite albums.

The first single I bought was "Bangla Desh" by George Harrison. My first 8 track tape was "Golden Hits" by The Turtles. My first cassette tape was "Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits". My first VHS tape was "The Last Waltz". My first DVD was "Salt and Pepper", a Jeannie Pepper video.

The first piece of vinyl I bought was Substitute by THE WHO. I still have it and it plays as good as the day I bought it. In those days record shops had listening booths were you could go in and sample a record. I never really bothered with 8track or cassettes. I was always the one who had the tape snag. Then you had to open the cassette and repair it, sometimes with a splicing kit.

My first 45 RPMs were "The Unicorn" by the Irish Rovers followed by "Snoopy and the Red Baron" by The Royal Guardsmen but next came some of those great Creedence Clearwater Revival 45's that had an A Side hit on both sides. As far as I know only The Beatles and The Beach Boys gave you the same bang for your buck. And that's what they cost. One dollar.
My first 33 RPM LP was "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly

This thread has inspired me to think back:eek: I used to trawl secondhand record shops for old motown 45s and anything on the chess label. Saturday morning early was the time me and my mate rode the number 17 bus into town to seek out some vinyl. Every purchase was a victory;) when we got girlfriends they just didn't get it:confused: mine said "let's get out of here it smells like old paper" Yes I thought, that is why I come here to smell old musty record sleeves. I don't know why but girls never had that collecting passion that boys did. Even now the missus tuts ans mumbles when I buy a new record:p

I cant remember tapes or things like that but I remember my first vinyl, it was the single 'When The Lights All Went Down In Massechusetts' by the BeeGee's. I think it must have been either 1968 or 69 and I bought it with my pocket money from Bruce Moore's in Hartlepool while visiting my Granny.

I spent some time with Rick Wakeman about 12 years ago and although my first album was Animals by Pink Floyd,I lied and told him his album,(my 2nd album) was my first purchase white rock.
White rock is the soundtrack to the 1972 winter olympics(ideal background music for parties)and this was typical all night viewing.
You've probably never heard of it and it's only due to chilling out that I had. We used to get a train to London and spend all night at the all night cinema, which showed things like The song remains the same or Woodstock etc. Nothing like this was on tv and videos were specialist/mail order outlets.
.
Rick told me he'd written and recorded most of it and then left it alone. When the final day of recording came he found himself in the studio with the live orchestra and a last minute panic. The finale of the film (the important bit) was virtually ad libbed, all the keyboard stuff unrehearsed.......but I think he got away with it.:)

Cool story!
I met Rick Wakeman at a small private solo piano concert in California, back in the early 90's. It was an interesting night! He would play the baby grand piano, then tell funny and strange stories from his career between the songs. One was that he was on tour and driving through the U.K. countryside when he had a bad attack of the runs. So he knocked on the door to the first country house he could find, and asked them if he could use the bathroom. They let him in without him saying he was a celebrity. After he was in the toilet for a while, the door opened and an arm popped in with his first solo album and a pen! And the woman asked if he could sign it?? He said, at that point, he couldn't refuse.
After the concert, he stood to the side of the piano and the guests were invited to meet him. I went up to meet him and after I was going to just move on, in passing I said that I had just bought the newest Yes concert CD with him and the reformed Yes band. He then stopped me and said that he had nothing to do with that release, and wound up talking about Yes with about us 3 or 4 people for around 20 minutes. He was a very easy going, grounded person. No bad celebrity attitude, just another regular guy.

... and an amazingly talented one!
That is an amazing story and very well told.
Sorry I didn't think a simple thanks was enough!
Let me qualify this post by relating my own small relatively recent experience.
I found Renee Geyers website (if you were Australian, you'd know her) and enquired if I could buy an autographed copy of her autobiography.
I later Googled various bookshops. Her own link was the cheapest!
I sent her a money order, and nothing happened for a couple of weeks, so I contacted her again (she contacted me 3 or 4 times personally) as her secretary had gone on holidays around this time.
So she finds the letter apologises profusely and sends me a copy of her latest album, also personally autographed with a "I hope you like this" message as well, for nothing along with a nice message in the book.
Around two or three weeks later I saw a show of hers and while my friends were waiting to have a CD signed I opened with "You probably don't remember me, I emailed" .., before I could say any more she shouts my name and admonishes me for sending a money order through the mail!..
I thought that was what they were for?

Paul McCartney - Pipes of Peace.
It's supposed to be a horrible album, but I kinda like it; it has great sentimental value and listening to it just brings back Christmas '83.

Firsts bought with my own money
LP record: Double Fantasy by John Lennon. On the day it came out. No longer have it. All that I bought prior to May 1983 were destroyed in a tragic fire.
Cassette: Piece of Mind by Iron Maiden. It wasn't available on vinyl at the music store I went to. No longer have it. Durability was the problem with cassettes.
CD: I got about 5 the same time I bought a player. This was around 1994. I was the last in my neighborhood to break down and buy a CD player.
I did own some 8 tracks. But I never bought those. I received a portable 8 track player as a gift and a few people gave my their old 8 tracks every now and then. I would say I hated it, but to me at the time it was better than nothing. Now, I'd probably opt for nothing.

I was also thinking about the first music I ever recorded from the radio (on a Philips reel-to-reel) and I reckon that was Meddle by Pink Floyd. I seem to remember John Peel playing the whole album on his radio show! :D
Ah, the memories! :D

1st 45 (7") - Ticket to Ride/Yes It Is - The Beatles (the label stated From the movie 'Eight Arms to Hold You'. The single was issued before the movie title was changed to 'Help!')
EP's were not commercially available in the US in the early 60's
1st LP - Hard Day's Night - The Beatles (the shitty Capitol release that contained ONLY the music from the movie). I played this album so much that my mom finally told me that every time I made her listen to it I had to listen to one of her albums. Since she was into BeeBop and Cool she 'forced' me to listen to Miles, Byrd and Trane. I think I actually won out in this deal. I still have this album and there are no grooves left. You put the stylus on it and it just skips across the album with a random note or two.
1st cassette - I honestly don't remember, but I'd put money on it being another Beatle album.
1st 8 track - Steely Dan's Greatest Hits
1st CD - The Nightfly - Donald Fagan

A week or two later I purchased Queen's - Bohemian Rhapsody. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ)

- 1st and only 'owned' 8-track was given to me by a friend in 1978, from his older brother's collection (stolen). It was Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies.
