According to a history of New York I read several years ago, there is a nude, Art-Deco style statue of her in a time capsule buried in the foundation of one of the major skyscrapers built in the 1930s -- I can't recall whether it was the Empire State or the Chrysler building. It was included in the time capsule as an example for future generations of what, in the 1930s, was considered the "perfect female body".

What a woman indeed!

In the early 70's I read she would walk around the movie set stark naked and uninhibited! Someone with a camera shot away while she seemingly posed deliberately. Ingenues like her would let men take photos of them naked for as little as $20. Perhaps you are right and she is a burlesque queen or stripper. There was sometimes confusion sometimes between actresses. Others were outright pranks, just for April Fool's Day.The one image I have is of her wearing a white chiffon robe. I think it's a fake, so I won't bother with it.

A one minute clip of Joan(Aline MacMahon is the girl showing nothing in the tub) from Gold Diggers of 1933. Most of us have seen caps from her with her legs crossed, and showing lots of side boobage. She rarely looked better, IMHO.

These pics are a slightly different clarity. Pic #3 is about as good as topless in my imagination.
We have seen the swimsuit (3rd last) before but not with the extra side boobage.
And there is that chair again (2nd last)- a friend of my brother's, friend's, uncle's neighbour knows the photographer's brother that took that set (of at least 30!) but a rich boyfriend of Joan's bought up all the negatives and hid them in a vault :p .. oh and of course 20 were TOTAL NUDES!! :p :p

Don't want to be a pain in the arse, but the mix up is an easy one to make.
I think the problem stems from this set of photos.
Both Joan and Bette had a very similar appearance at this time, particularly their hairstyles.
Personally I think Joan always looked better:)

Bette co-starred with Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak and Warren William in the 1932 Pre Code "Three on a Match." This is the only film I am aware of where Bette wears a swimsuit in a scene (Joan wears a sun suit instead).

Joan and Bette were lifelong friends, having come up together in the Warner Bros. treadmill of the early 1930's.

Hopefully no dupes...check out the 2nd image! So much boobage was on display, some moron put an x on it for fear someone my run the image in a paper somewheres...at least someone removed the ink..and the photo wasn't destroyed... those photos of her looking her "oldest" are from the mid 60's not bad, she must have lost some weight at that time... all sizes...
