Download and Convert Embedded FLV files!

Hi! We've all clicked on links to sites such as ******* and seen a video we like. A few people have asked me how I download these. So instead of repeating myself, I've decided to just make a how to. I've made this as simple as possible, most people will be able to do this without the instruction, this is for the ones that can't.

The program I use to do this is Flash Video Resources Downloader 1.0.1 - this is a firefox add-on and I've found it works with more sites than others I've tried.

All you do is go to the page containing the embedded .flv file and press the download icon as shown below.

Next you're greeted with a new tab. Select the 'Get Video' button as shown below.

Another button appears with 'Get flv' on it. Press it, this is where you're gonna see if the video is downloadable. If it's not it comes up as 'An Error Occured: Could not retrieve .flv file'.

If that doesn't happen then you've reached the final step... hurray!! A familiar window should appear. Simply select 'OK'. Oh, make sure you selected 'Save File' as opposed to 'Open with' again as shown below.

And there you go. You've got your video all ready to do stuff to. I usually convert them to AVI format using OJOsoft Total Video Converter. It's not free but it's good. I'm sure you can find ways of getting it.

Once converted you can begin splitting and joining. For this I use AVI Splitter & AVI Joiner. These again aren't free but the trail versions are perfectly workable. I use these two programs because they handle every AVI file, some programs don't.

I use Firefox and an Add-on called Download helper 3.2.2
It also rips pictures from non free image sites, it can also convert from .flv to .avi, though you need an extra file from their website.

Run the movie, launch aTube catcher and it automatically loads the link. Then it auto converts to a usable format. Rarely lets me down.

Forget whether or not net video hunter (http://netvideohunter.en.softonic.com/) is the
sucessor to aTube catcher or not, but it works
pretty much in the same way. Firefox/Pale moon.

Sounds very complicated to me, i just use realplayer for this, once installed (i hardly ever watch anything with the player), you also get the Realplayer Download & Recording Manager.

When you hover over a youtube or x-rated streaming site/clip, it will put a Realplayer icon above the clip you're watching,like so..

Just click it, then will open a small RealManager,downloading it to yr My Documents folder,in the My Videos you will find the clips.
Don't do more than 3 at the same time, had some faulty clips.

Only bothering thing is sometimes this 'Download'-icon will stay in your screen,no matter which page you go to, renewing your page doesn't help, only closing your browser...
(and yes,i use Mozilla Firefox, not an IE problem.)

I usually just let video play then go to TempInternetFiles and find it.
But I've had a strange problem today after converting the flv to avi.
I can only play it with VLC, WMP and WMClassic only give sound but no picture.
Since I wanted to playback on my DVD player that does handle avi it was frustrating to find that the avi burned to disc only gave me sound.
Any suggestions re a foolproof converter?

I use VideoCacheView from Nirsoft.It shows all videos in your tempinternetfiles folder when you run it and you just have to copy it to any folder on your computer(My Videos for example).It doesn't convert FLV files though.

I use Firefox with the FlashGot addin. It makes it easy to transfer downloads to separate download managers, but it will also allow you to capture FLV files. FLV Extract (http://www.moitah.net/)can extract the audio and video, but you would have to mux them into whatever container you want.

I just leave them as an FLV file, though. Most new software players play them just as well. MPC (Home Cinema version), VLC and MPlayer all work. Even if you muxed them into an AVI container, you still may have trouble getting them to play if you don't have the right CODECs set up. If the FLV container had H.264 or VP6 video, your player needs to have those CODECs available, no matter what container you used, unless you encode them again.

You must have been using an old version of VLC, because it should have worked. This page (http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_flv_files.cfm) tells you how to play FLV files using WMP. It also talks about setting up ffdshow with MPC, but I think the new Home Cinema versions don't require it. Your DVD player probably doesn't have the right CODEC, so you would have to encode using a CODEC that the player supports to use it.

i'm not sure that's going to work for all videos. and this is just a guess on my part- but maybe with the download assistants you get a chance to build a file out of streamed content that windows would not have done itself?

This may be a protection scheme built into the file. I used to occasionally get this or similar problems until I tried a program called UnLocker. It clears these protection attributes and allows you to copy or move the file.
