The trouble with bikes is that you have a bigger chance of ending up travelling very slowly in a wooden box.

That's Kool. Don't ride a BMX myself (tho had one when I was younger), and I am sure your custom bike, while super Kool-looking, is also good to ride.
Never had a car - don't want one. Always loved to cycle. Had Bikes since I was eight. Some bigger kids, about 4 of them got me in an underpass and dragged me off my 1st bike when I was about ten. Cunts.
(If anyone has a red Raliegh 'Clipper' from about 1974 in the Glagow area, it could be mine... Can I have it back, please?)
And some fucker(s) stole my bike when I was @ Uni
In between I have had many bikes, some good, some bad. Now I have a beautiful semi-pro mountain bike that I use on-road, off and extreme.
It is always a joy to ride a bicycle :D

That sucks,I had loads of bikes stolen when i was younger,But i was lucky enough to never get robbed for it like you experienced :(
That is so out of order!
I actually keep my BMX in my house, and ill never lock it up anywhere.
I bought it mainly because i could never afford a decent bike when i was younger,so now money isnt a problem i thought id try to recapture my youth,The fact its single gear means it jkeeps me in very good shape (even though i look fat in the pic) lol
The cost of motoring these days is a joke,
Tax,insurance not too mention the petrol/diesel prices.
More people should use bicycles,Obviously its not an option for some people (work travel etc) but its great in 2 ways, cheap and keeps you fit.
What MTB do you have kiwi?
A friend of mine has a WELL top of the range MTB
its a salsa bandito, full XTR groupset/cranks etc carbon forks (cant remember the make) carbon bars & post, magura disc brakes, hope hubs, chris king headset, its a sick ride,
cost in the region of £2800 :) and weighs about 19lbs !

I never leave my bike chained anywhere either, gs1 - I have a small locking device but I use it only if my GF & I are out cycling 2gether and we stop @ a beer garden in summer, and only then both bikes are always in sight. If I go to a business meeting (I am self-employed) I always take the bike into the office with me, clients are always kool about it, they understand.
It's a great way to get around, no doubt about it. I can get into the center of town quicker than the bus most days, not to mention cars - all stuck in a traffic jam. The only down side 4 me is winter. I live in central Europe & winters tend 2b hard so it generally means that for 2 or 3 months, I can't get out on my bike :(
My bike, gs1, is an American-made bike. it weighs about 4kgs :) The trade name is Kellys - it has 24 gears (I only use 6! - I've yet to go up a mountain on it :D - I do ride extreme - every time I go out on to the open road amongst all the gas-guzzlers, can't listen to any sounds as I can when I am in the forest because I have to keep my wits-about-me so that don't end up in hospital or worse ... )
here's a pic - it's no where in the league with your mate's bike - but I love it :)

Uncomplicated, [no turbo or front-wheel-drive or electric windows or any of that poofy nonsense to go wrong], very cheap to run , and extremely reliable.
Primitive though - it's like stepping back 30 years when you drive it.
Sounds just like my Mustang, though it's not cheap to run, and it's stepping back 40 years:cool:

All owned objects take on the personality of the owner. What you see here is my car as Ford would like it to be and my bike as Kawasaki intended. The makes and colours are right. The bits fallen off and the dents as big as Fingal's Cave are not shown here, not to mention the key scratchs and the general demeanor of hard use and indifference.
They are both faithful servants. The car is roomy (by British standards), comfortable and an excellent mile-muncher: standard issue to junior sales reps since 1998. The bike used to belong to courier firm Addison Lee and oh boy does it show. It has been round the world about four times, but it is as tough as boots: so far it has carried me through nearly four years of daily commuting, plus trips to Venice, Florence, Lucerne, Chamonix and the Ardnamurchan peninsular in Highland Scotland: the Rough Guide to Scotland says simply - 'Motorcyclists: do not break down here.' The car is purely utilitarian: the bike is my true love. Swooping down the Brenner Pass into Italy on board this workhorse is one of my scheduled deathbed memories.

You obviously know it, bellsmyre49. But you are not entirely correct. There are a lot of ''things'' there. They are midges.
Actually there are more midges on Ardnamurchan than there are human beings on the whole of Planet Earth. I met every single one of them.

My first car I bought was a 1967 Mustang Fastback. It was black with the black deluxe interior. I put mag wheels on it with big and little tires. It had the 390 cu.in. engine with a 3 speed transmission. It would do the tire burnout just like in "Bullet". It had to sell it because I had too many points on my drivers licence. My current car is a 2010 Mercury Milan that is silver.

As a german, of course, i drive a german car. So here it is. A cornflower-blue Audi A3 8L Turbo (11/1996).I'm driving it for 13 years and had no major repair costs until now (btw, typical for Audi). Pure quality but expensive to buy.
Forget Daimler Benz, BMW or Porsche. I tell you the germans prefer Audi.
The pics are from the sales day but i swear today it looks almost exactly as then. No tuning or pimping. As i bought it. But it has a few scratches now.
With this nice little horse i have to continue a long, long ride into the sunset.

I've just worked out that at current petrol prices it would cost about £130 to fill the tank and it would only travel about 220 miles on that amount of fuel

I much preferred the Opel to the Capri although owned neither I have driven both. The Ford had masive marketing behind it but essentailly it was just a Dagenham Dustbin Cortina in a pretty skirt. A long bonnet line made it look sweet although in reality a 4 speed gearbox and jumpy rear axle were hardly sports car material. A pal of mine gave me a ride in his 2.8 turbo model and the way it skipped across uneaven road surfaces on corners tested the limts of my bowel control

Bodie and Doyle also hammered around in an Escort Mk11 RS2000. It was always one of my dream cars and after leaving university and getting a job it was one of my first purchases. A 1978 RS2000 Custom in white, only 110bhp which is nothing nowadays, but plenty back then when the equivalent Capri was only good for 98bhp. The handling of the Escort was in a different league to any Capri at that time ( apart from maybe the extremely rare Aston Martin developed Tickford turbo )
Another early car of mine was a 1900SR A series Opel Manta. That was superbly engineered and also handled way better than any comparable Capri.
The 138 bhp 3 litre Capris of that time had basic rear suspension and although moderately fast in a straight line handled really poorly. The rear axle of the Manta with the Panhard rod made it so much more secure on the road.

You are right about the capri, it had the underpinnings of a horse and cart with a live rear axle and leafspring suspension, the same that could be seen on cars of WW I vintage.
The Ford were also held back by that nail of an engine, the Kent unit and sizes from 1300cc, linked to a cable clutch. As I said, a very basic car but given a work over by the geniuses at Ford's all powerfull marketing department. Th Manta B was a better car by design all round and yet the Capri kinda hit the hot button for your average working class brown collar joe who could never afford an E type Jag and yet saw the same long bonnet on the Capri. They also had phenominal fanny magnet and knicker WD40 potential with all the Sharron's and Julie's.
I drove a 1600 Mk IV and a 1600 MK V Cortina at the time and I thought that they were great, and yes I too wanted a Capri until the day I drove my first Vauxhall Cavalier 1300 GL, It ate the 1600 Cortina for breakfast in every way. Sadly I was stuck with two further Ford Jelly Moulds, a 1600 Sierra in white and then an 1800 GL Sierra in White with a Sun roof and the CVH engine. The engine mounts were changed 3 times to try and stop and engine judder that never went away. 70,000 miles later I took delivery of my 1800 SRi Injection Vauxhall Astra...........I have never ordered a Ford again in over 20 years.

One of my earlier cars was MkII Cortina 1600E, this was fitted with the 1600 Kent engine but better breathing by means of a different manifold and a dual choke Weber carb ( not the twin 45DCOE Weber carbs fitted to the Lotus ) gave the Ford lump 88bhp. The handling was better than other MkII Cortinas because of the lowered Lotus suspension.
The same engine was in my Mk1 Escort Mexico, but the lighter weight made the Escort much quicker.
Another Ford I ran back in the 80's was a MkIII Escort RS Turbo. The ones you could only get in white. It was a well developed turbo installation with boost coming in smoothly from 2500rpm. Nice car to drive and handled really well. Only other Ford car I've ran was an ST24 Mondeo, which I thought looked pretty smart with the black paint.
A couple of SRi Cavaliers and a GSi2000 have also filled my garage at various times. Smart Recaro interiors and a very high ratio 5th gear made them effortless to drive over long distances.
My current Impreza Turbo is different class though, handling is superb, the exhaust burble is awesome and the car looks gorgeous from any angle.

I had a bad experience.:(
I bought an "Ford Escort L" in the 80s. Apparently the factory had a problem with the carburetor. In two years i had to change three times. Although the problem was in origin, i had to pay them all, with the excuse that they were pieces that were worn.
In the third year i talked to the director of the dealer, who was also a personal friend, for making me an offer, because it recognized that the car came out defective.
Your buy-back offer was 50 percent lower than that of an Opel dealer in another town, where i knew no one.
The result: I bought on "Opel Kadet GSI", and Ford never again
Salut !

Yes, I agree, you will have read that I never ordered a Ford again in over 20 years.
However last year I was working on behalf of a client who rather than pay the agency that I get my contracts through to drive an agency car, they insured me to drive one of their surplus fleet cars... a 2.0l petrol Mondeo Ghia estate.
Now this car was a gutless wonder with a misfire and hesitation and an ability to stall at the slightest provocation. It was due a service and I booked it into my friendly local Ford dealer for a full service where I asked them to correct the faults. (I told my wife and wrote down a prediction in a sealed envelope which I gave to my wife) Sure enough the delaership told me that I had the wrong engine, it was a known fault and I should have got the later model, essentially the dealer blamed poor engine design and yet they tried to sell me a newer Ford...........there may be one born every minute.....but it aint me. Oh and they did not correct the fault
They make nice looking cars....but I would not trust a Ford Dealer one jot.

All Ford. Never had a bad one yet. Have I just been lucky ?I also prefer Fords, given that I am motoring at the Tesco/Lidl end of the spectrum rather than the luxury end, where I might rather like to own a Mercedes or a BMW (I have travelled in a BMW seven series and it was a splendid car). I drove several Austin Metros/Rover 100s and I thought that was a horrid little car with a rough unpleasant engine and a rotten gearshift which always trapped my thumb against the handbrake lever whenever I put it in reverse. In that class, although underpowered, the Nissan Micra was much nicer to drive and surprisingly nippy if you pushed it hard. Under-powered little cars which are well put together can be a lot of fun. I briefly owned a Mk1 Vauxhall Astra which I liked but which wasn't very reliable, what with brake discs warping, ignition problems etc. That was stolen from me. The insurance money paid for a Mk2 Ford Fiesta which did pretty well, in spite of the fact that it was a shopping trolly and I was using it for motorway driving. It was reliable and cheap to run and I got excellent use out of it, until that one got stolen as well.
My present car is a Ford Mondeo 1.8LX: I got it from my last employer. It was my line manager's company car and he abused it worse than little orphan Annie, so I got it 5 years ago for £500, which was dirt cheap for a reliable and well serviced car and reflected the "cosmetically challenged" discount. Tabler looked very askance at the assorted dents when he saw it and he was admiring it from its best side.:D Brilliant car: comfy, quiet capable of license losing speeds without too much strain, yet paradoxically I am better behaved and more responsible driving it than I was in my Fiesta, which I did tend to flatline at 95mph if the motorway was empty. I think I had enough talent to max out that little car but the Mondeo can do a lot more than I can, so I don't feel inclined to even try to reach its limits. I also lived with a new Ford Focus 1.6 diesel for a week, covering nearly 1,000 miles and I would happily buy a brand new one if funds allowed.Of the cars I have owned or driven, the best were all Fords. The blue oval is a fine brand.

Still on my Ford Mondeo Mark 3. I just got through the MOT so all things being equal that's one more year of fast-enough, cheap and comfortable motoring.
Mechanic: Mr Scoundrel, your car looks like shit.
Scoundrel: Is that a fail?
Mechanic: No. I just wanted to tell you your car looks like shit.
Scoundrel: Has it passed the MOT?
Mechanic: Yep.
Scoundrel: Then I couldn't give a f*** what it looks like.
Silly little man: what's a spot of minor cosmetic damage between friends?:D

And it's funny that Ford retired the Falcon models here in the States in the late 1960's... I was surprised to see the name when I got there. Sweet cars though, again, It'd be really nice if we could get them here.

This was my first car.
Mine was a 149ci 6, the other option was a 179, and the S4 which was limited production, and breathed on for Series Production racing.
The Red Motor was very popular, they were light bodied and power to weight (for the time) was very good. I did a lot of long trips in mine. They were simple to work on and the engine was reliable.
Like most 60's cars the weakness was the brakes, drums all round.
For those of you not old enough to be familiar with driving with drums it involved a good deal of anticipation, compared to today anyway. More like being able to see into the future. Of course at the time it didn't bother us at all because we didn't know any different. But looking back...
One night it was stolen from out the front of my house and I didn't see it again. This sort of thing is a bit of a tradition in Sydney.
EH Holden
After 15 years of the all-conquering Holden, GM-H suddenly faced a challenge from Ford's new Falcon. Its answer, the EH, was as good a budget family car as any and made the world pay close attention to Australia's industry. Holden's production lines got up to speed and customers no longer paid a premium for quick delivery or made a "second-best" choice because a rival model was available sooner. A remarkable 250,000 EHs were sold in 18 months - the fastest-selling Australian car ever. Buyers liked the new six-cylinder engine; the style; the big boot; the choice of five body variants. All loved the value.(Peter Davis)

This is my car, a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Although not the first car I drove or was the principle (if not the only) driver of, this is the first car I bought brand new. When I took possession of the car, she had only 8 miles on her. Now she's got over 45,000.

The car's nicknme is Tina. Most of the cars in our family have been named. Between my parents and siblings we've driven the Cruisemobile, Stuart, Ruby, Scarlet, the Gray Ghost and Blue. The reason she's called Tina is because she's silver, which is the color of platinum, the chemical symbol being Pt and in the comic book Metal Men, the female Platinum robot is called Tina.

The last car I actually owned was an old 1995 Cavalier GSi in Burgandy Metallic. (similar to the one in pic). Haven't needed one for last couple of years; fortunately; with the price of fuel here in Uk right now.

Incidentally, I always thought that the esteemed 'Mr Estreeter' was one of our American cousins; not an Aussie? (going by his Holden 'Ute) You learn something every day here.

A very boring Vauxhall Astra 2007 my Granda left me. It has a turbo so you can get a bit of speed up.
I have one of these:

Yes, it's high maintenance, but I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

The CV was a great car. I worked for / served my time in the main dealers in Belfast. All The old Citroens were great, the SM was the first car to have headlights that moved with the steering. John Lennon had one. But they were a bastard to work at. A service could take hours.

My mother in law had a couple of brand new CXs back in the 70's - I loved them .
I've had a couple of GSs - another great car but a complete bastard to work on. You had to take out the heater unit to change the front disc pads

Sorry your right CX fleets. Spark plugs were a big job on these cars. The 2CV was a laugh, but the diane was just junk. When The hand break slipped you stuck a 2p coin in to fix it. They lasted as long as the shite cars.

As a non-driver of many years, I note with interest that no-one has ever said to me, "You should buy a car. It's great."
What has been said is that driving is a useful skill to have.
But no-one, ever, has pointed out that I am missing a whole lot by not owning an automobile.
Interesting.

You should've tried to change the spark plugs on an old 1973 VW Type3 variant (had one back in late eighties)..... sounds easy, being a flat four; except they put a thin metal panel between the plugs and side of the engine bay...
meaning u had to have a plug socket with ratchet made of bendy metal, fingers like pipe cleaners, or the proper vw tool at great expense; for what reason i have no idea..??!!
swear it would have been easier and quicker to have taken the whole engine out just to do the plugs..??

Sorry to say against you, my friend billybunter,
directional beacon but are not an invention of Citroen, but
Preston Truker on the car of the same name "Trucker" in 1948, among the first in Citroen to be equipped with the DS in 1968 was then followed by SM 1970, when access to the dustbin of mechanical SM, from my experience this is the only car where it falait out the engine to make an adjustment valve that shit, but I must say that I hate these cars, I've never had the soul of a sailor:D preferring a real car rather than something that acts like a boat:D, suffering from seasickness
Matter of taste. ;):)

It is actually the other way around. A steel sprung car, if worn or loaded, will bounce around like a boat. A (real) Citroen will keep its stance at all times.
Some earlier models had soft suspension, but they were never bouncy. Later models have stiffer suspension, but ride and handling is still superior to ordinary cars. Thats what make them so great. But as you say, its a matter of taste.

Wife drives a 2004 Mercedes S430.
Haven't had a car payment in years and want to keep it that way.
I have a broken down 1983 Porsche 944 in the garage with a cover on it that one of these day I'm going to restore. But it has sat and not moved since 2004.

A VW Lupo diesel would you believe. £30 a year road tax, and in the time Ive had it (over six years) its never failed its MOT, that put the mockers on it hasnt it! Although its just passed its latest one. Best MPG Ive managed is 70, but it does only have an 8 gallon tank.

I sold my Opel Vectra 1.6 last October. It was a 1995 model my father bought in 1997. He passed it to me a couple of years later. Great car, always served us well but it's just getting old and I don't really need a car in Vienna. You can get wherever you want within an hour with our public transportation system and without worrying about traffic jam or finding parking space. Parking your car in Vienna can really be a pain in the ass, especially in the evenings.
This is what it looked like, except that mine was silver metallic:
