Media Player Classic [+/- 3MB][freeware]
Operating System : there are versions for Windows 9x and 2000/XP/Vista/7
Choose the correct one for your system and choose the latest stable version.

Note that MPC is also included in most K-Lite Codec Packs like the:
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack [+/- 17MB][freeware]
Operating System : Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/7
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm

Note: make sure to set the save filetype of the images to .jpg, the .bmp type is not supported by a lot of image hosts and also it will give you bigger filesizes. You can set the filetype to .jpeg when you save thumbnails or a image with Media Player Classic:

Best to use a 8 rows 4 collumns setting otherwise the thumbnails will get to small to be usefull.

Have done mys first movie screenshots with media player classic.
Works fine but i want to have more screens then 8 * 4.
If i set the rows to more then 8 i recive an error message.
out of memory buy more.

System is running von 3GB Ram. More XP cant work with.
Any idea?? Want to make better screens because the 5 or 6 min "space" ist too much.

Buying memory will not help ... somehow 8x8 is the maximum number of thumbs that MPC can handle i always use 8x4 thats the most usefull setting on MPC when you want more then look at Image Grabber II (http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t25615-image-grabber-ii-freeware-tool-to-make-movie-file-screenshotspreviews-windows-982000mexp.html) it gives very simular results but you are free with the number of thumbs you can use.

Hmm, i thought i have seen some screens with more than 8*8 screenshots.
MPC always prints his logo at the top. So i have tried to make the same.

But for more i will try Image Grabber. Thanks for Info.

The clip or movie where you want to make screens of must be opened in MPC first cause when there is no mediacontent loaded the save image/thumbnails options are not possible and they stay grey ... think that is whats happening in your case ...

Does anyone know of a Linux app that creates thumbnail screenshots of the sort that MPC does?

Not familiar with Linux but Google gave me these 3 options:

movie thumbnailer (mtn):
http://moviethumbnail.sourceforge.net/

QFrameCatcher :
http://developer.berlios.de/projects/qframecatcher

GFrameCatcher:
http://developer.berlios.de/projects/gframecatcher

Succes.

Thanks for that.

Info for any other Linux users reading this:
mtn is a command line only app, and from what I can tell you need to compile it yourself. Good for geeks, I suppose.

QFrameCatcher and GFrameCatcher are essentially the same programme. The former is optimised for KDE and the latter is optimised for Gnome.

I've installed GFrameCatcher and it works perfectly. It's only job is to create thumbnails of movie files, so it's interface is very simple. The one drawback with it is that it doesn't pick up the aspect ratio of the movie, so you need to adjust pixel sizes of thumbnails manually.

Perhaps other option for Linux:

The windows version of KMPlayer has a storyboard option:
http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t57835-let-the-kmplayer-do-the-storyboard-for-you.html

Perhaps thats also possible on this Linux based KMPlayer:
http://kmplayer.kde.org/screenshots.php

But no experience with it whatsoever.

Hi I am trying to produce screengrabs for ripped video. Following the 'how to guide'. however whn it comes to he save image i get a message saying
'cannot create thumbnails for files with no duration'. Is this a setting thing? as i can't find it. Any help would be appreciated.

'cannot create thumbnails for files with no duration'.
I'm not familair with that error, does it only happen with one file? or also when you try to make screens from other video files?

Sometimes - when ripping a video and converting to another file-format - the time-scale (code) gets lost. By result: the video-length is zero. The screenshot-function however needs this time-line in order to function properly.

Just a thought...being a non-Expert though

thanks Roger Allott and DubSalute
i tested GFrameCatcher and it works fine. thanks !

btw, Totem (the default gnome movie player) can also create thumbnails, but it takes one image every 4 seconds, whatever the duration of the movie is (i didn't find any way to change that parameter)
.
I also tried EKD (http://translate.google.fr/translate?prev=hp&hl=fr&js=n&u=http%3A%2F%2Fekd.tuxfamily.org%2Findex.php%2FDoc uments%2FImagesPlancheContact&sl=fr&tl=en), a very promising project for video edition.
You can extract every images of a video and then create a contact sheet with all or only some of them but this is less simple than with GFrameCatcher if you only want to extract thumbnails.

A few days ago I thought it might be a jolly good idea to update my codec package. I've had the K-Lite Mega pack and it seemed to be pretty flawless for ages, so I got the new version (9.3.0). It still comes bundled with MPC HomeCinema, which I find to be a damn good Windows tool for thumbnails.

However, the latest version of MPC-HC has a problem with thumbnails, in that if you're running Vista you'll probably get an error message "Attempted an unsupported operation" when you try to save a thumbnail.

A search of Google tells me that this is a known bug (see http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/mpc-hc/ticket/2554) and the latest info is that a prog bod seems to have found a solution (see https://github.com/mpc-hc/mpc-hc/commit/b8965612d66843374da1286b6496abaaa61dc75f). However, it seems that the solution requires re-compiling the source code to create a new .exe, so one hopes they'll be getting an update out shortly.

In the meantime, I've re-started using Video Thumbnails Maker, but that for some unfathomable reason has developed a bug where screenshots are duplicated in the thumbnail image for no good reason (see below for example). This makes it look like the video is 'stuttering', when in fact it plays perfectly.

If anyone else has had this problem and can recall how to solve it, please let me know.
