Still unfamiliar with .rar files and what to do with them ? and you have Windows: 9x/2000/ME/2003/XP/Vista then read this ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------
About .rar files:

A .rar file is a compressed archive like a WinZip .zip file, it has one or more files compressed inside. When by example a media file is packed in a .rar file then you will first have to extract (unrar) the media file from the archive to be able to play it with your media player. To extract the file(s) from a .rar archive you will need a program like WinRar that is capable of doing that.

WinRar is not free but there is a good free and trusted alternative RarZilla Free Unrar 2.52. Download and install it when you don't have WinRar.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and install RarZilla Free Unrar:

RarZilla Free Unrar 2.55 (3.3MB)

Very simple but powerfull .rar archives extraction tool that can extract password encrypted .rar files. You can start the extraction simply by double clicking on the .rar file or by dragging and dropping it on the program, also supports spanned archives.

http://img179.imagevenue.com/loc535/th_31701_RarZilla_123_535lo.jpg (http://img179.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=31701_RarZilla_123_535lo.jpg)

Freeware.
Runs on: Windows XP/Vista/7
Download:
http://www.philipp-winterberg.com/software/rarzilla_free_unrar.php

--------------------------------------------------------------------
How to extract the .rar files when RarZilla Free Unrar is installed:

Browse to the .rar file you downloaded and double click on it, a RarZilla Free Unrar window will pop-up (see screen below) and it starts extracting the file(s) inside the archive to the same folder where the .rar archive is in. When done (succesfull or unsuccesfull) the window will disappear again.

http://img45.imagevenue.com/loc546/th_36168_RarZillaNoPass_123_546lo.jpg (http://img45.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=36168_RarZillaNoPass_123_546lo.jpg)

Note: when a movie is split and posted in multiple (spanned) .rar parts like this:

filename.part01.rar
filename.part02.rar
filename.part03.rar
filename.part04.rar
...
filename.part??.rar (last part)

Then you will first have to download all parts to the same folder on your computer to succesfully extract the file.

After extracting you can delete the .rar file(s).

Note: some files are password protected (see screen below), when that is the case note down the password (case sensitive!) you will need it later during the extraction.

http://img137.imagevenue.com/loc1154/th_31702_RarZillaPass_123_1154lo.jpg (http://img137.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=31702_RarZillaPass_123_1154lo.jpg)

Things that can go wrong: :(
--------------------------------------------------------------------
You got all the parts in the same folder and the correct password but the file will not extract succesfully.

That happens sometimes, check, when it is a spanned .rar archive, if all the parts were downloaded correctly, you can do this by comparing the filesize: all the parts must be exactly the same filesize only the last part is allowed to be smaller:

filename.part01.rar = 99,9 MB (104.857.000 bytes)
filename.part02.rar = 99,9 MB (104.857.000 bytes)
filename.part03.rar = 95,2 MB (99.858.692 bytes)
filename.part04.rar = 99,9 MB (104.857.000 bytes)
...
filename.part??.rar (last part) = 16,8 MB (17.630.672 bytes)

In this example filename.part03.rar is corrupted and needs to be downloaded again, when all first parts are exactly the same then most likely the last part is corrupt, redownload and try to extract. Should work then.

The file is extracted but it won't play in your media player: :(
--------------------------------------------------------------------

That happens when you don't have the needed codecs installed.

The free and trusted media player GOM Player will play 99% of all media types without the need to find and install codecs, it even plays damaged movies. Give it a try when you have problems watching movies, it will save you a lot of trouble. You can drag and drop a movie on the screen of GOM Player to make it play.

When there are still questions feel free to ask.

Take care, Dub.

Hi Turk.

Dziobas Rar Player

You will need to download the first and last rar part of a upload to be able to view the media file inside, see the Dziobas Rar Player Faq:
http://ds6.ovh.org/faq-rar-player.php

Download:
http://ds6.ovh.org/drp.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I myself don't use it, i use GOM Player in combination with WinRar.
When you have WinRar i advice you to do the same you will only need to download the first .rar part to view the movie then :)

You can do that like this:

Download the first .rar part (filename.part(0)1.rar) and save it to your desktop.

Click with the right mouse-button on the downloaded file and choose the option 'Extract Here' from the menu that pops up:

http://img103.imagevenue.com/loc768/th_62024_RarPlay1_123_768lo.jpg (http://img103.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=62024_RarPlay1_123_768lo.jpg)

The file will start to extract and its media file pictogram will appear on your Desktop, after a short time WinRar will ask for the second .rar part, just ignore and don't close WinRar. Open GOM Player and drag and drop the pictogram of that media file on the screen of GOM Player and it will play in 99% of all cases:

http://img18.imagevenue.com/loc1134/th_62024_RarPlay2_123_1134lo.jpg (http://img18.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=62024_RarPlay2_123_1134lo.jpg)

You will only be able to view the start of the movie of course and when you close WinRar the pictogram of the media file will dissapear again.

When you downloaded a file and miss the last part or you have the first 4 or 5 parts you can save and view the movie in the same way. Choose the 'Extract Here' wait till WinRar asks for the next file, then click with the right mouse-button on the new file choose 'Copy' on the pop up menu than click with the right mouse-button on a empty spot of the Desktop and choose the option 'Paste' close WinRar when the copying is finished and you will have a incomplete movie but you can play and watch it in GOM Player.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

GOM Player (4.51MB)

Hi val,

think this is whats happening:

Note: when a movie is split and posted in multiple (spanned) .rar parts like this:

filename.part01.rar
filename.part02.rar
filename.part03.rar
filename.part04.rar
...
filename.part??.rar (last part)

Then you will first have to download all parts to the same folder on your computer to succesfully extract the file.

When you want to extract a file that is split in multiple parts you need all parts downloaded and in the same place to extract ... otherwise it will ask for the next volume (.part0?.rar)

Look at the filename when there is ".part0?.rar" in it then you need all.

Does that solve it for you ?

For those .001, .002, etc... split files you will need HJSplit to join its a small program and also freeware.

It works very simular to extracting the .rar archives: download all parts to the same folder and then join them with HJSplit:

Run HJSplit > Join > Input File > browse to the location with the parts > open the .001 file (the only one you will see) > press Start and it gets joined.

When a file that is split into those .001, .002, etc... parts is a .rar or .zip archive you can extract it after joining.

HJSplit (http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/) (Freeware, Windows 9x/2000/NT/ME/XP/Vista (HJSplit 2.3), Mac, Linux, etc.)
Needs no install just unzip and double click on the exe to run the program.
HJSplit manual (http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/manual/)

Succes.

I just wanted to post this, since as this thread grows, someone will sooner or later ask this anyway:

How about rar files in Linux?

- Well, Linux has its own archiving tools, which are capable of processing rar archives as well. If using X, the default archiver program will launch as you click on the (first) rarred file and do exactly the same as Rarzilla or Winrar on windows. The most common archiving tool in Linux is Ark.

If you are not using X, or otherwise prefer to use the command line, just type:

unrar e <filename>

For all the options of the commandline, just type unrar and hit enter, and it will show all the options and strings for the command.

As noted above, for files ending .001 .002 etc, HJSplit also comes as a Linux version.

- Now if someone posts this for Mac as well, everyone will be happy ;)

UnRarX 2.2 (715 kB)

Drag and drop .rar extraction tool for MAC OS. Can handle password protected .rar files don't know if it can handle password encrypted ones.

Freeware
Download:
http://www.unrarx.com/

http://www.unrarx.com/faq.html

The easiest way to begin extracting your rar archive is to launch the UnRarX application and drag your rar archive into the main window.

In order to extract password protected rar files you must follow the following procedure:

Click on Toolbar Item labeled "Password"(a sheet should slide down from main application window)
Enter your Password
Click OK button
Drag your file into the UnRarX window to begin extraction.

Thanks for that very useful advice DubSalute. I had downloaded the 1981 movie 'Bad Girls' in 7 parts and purchased WinRAR to unpack it but it wouldn't work. I searched around on the web but couldn't find any helpful advice. It turned out that part 3 was short, so as you suggested above, I re-downloaded that part and it works fine.

Much appreciated,

Good to hear Deano! these are the things that you will and need to encounter once so next time you know what to do.

As described above will almost always help out, at least when you have the correct password when needed of course, its very rare that a post isn't correct. When you see that allready a lot of people responded or "thanked" then you can take for granted that the problem is on your end.

PS: at least you read one article ;)

With a spanned .rar archive all files should downloaded to your computer and in 1 folder.

click a download link > download file > save to computer (do not open!) > during the save procedure you can choose to what folder (location) you download, when you downloaded 1 part you download the next and download it again to the same folder etc.

when you have downloaded all parts but they are not in the same folder then open Windows Explorer and go to the part you want to move, click on it with the right mousebutton and choose the option "Cut" (Ctrl+X) (http://windows.about.com/od/dealingwithfiles/ss/movefiles_2.htm) on the menu that pops up then go to the folder where you want the file to be moved to and click in it with the right mousebutton in a empty space in that folder and choose the option "Paste" (Ctrl+V) (http://windows.about.com/od/dealingwithfiles/ss/movefiles_3.htm) on the menu that pops up then the file will be moved there repeat these steps when needed.

Only extract a spanned .rar archive when you have all parts in the same folder.

I do not understand when i download a rar file its keep telling me I do not have nessecary volume....Please explain the steps to overcome this....

Make sure to download (Save) to your computer do not open it ... download first, you most of the time will need multiple parts.

When you see .rar files like in by example "filename.part01.rar" with the "part.." in the filename then you need to download all the parts (volumes) before you can extract succesfull.

When you only have dowloaded 1 of the lets say 7 parts and you go extract then you will get the question that it needs the next volume to continue when that happens then download all the other parts first and extract only after you have downloaded them to the same folder on your computer.

Note: when a movie is split and posted in multiple (spanned) .rar parts like this:

filename.part01.rar
filename.part02.rar
filename.part03.rar
filename.part04.rar
...
filename.part??.rar (last part)

Then you will first have to download all parts to the same folder on your computer to succesfully extract the file.

one question. how do you get them in the same place? because i just downloaded two seperate files and they opened up in two seperate winrar windows.

By "in the same place" he means in the same file folder or directory on your harddrive.

if you have first .rar(s) of a movie on Mac

In Mac you can open the first Rar by your software extractor like (StuffIt), it will ask for the location of the second one, at the same time you will see a temporary folder that holds the extracted part, you can take from it , copy to another place, cancel the extractor software, the temp file will be deleted but the copied file will remain, you can view it with the player..
of course only the beginning part that you have downloaded can be viewed.

It's worth noting that Winrar is able to unrar the first one or ones of a spanned set of .rar files.Say there are 7 .rar files making up a video and you've only downloaded the first one or two you can run Winrar on these to make a working part file. This gives the option to preview a video for example without committing yourself to a big download. If you like what you find then download the other parts.

Hi Woofer,

I downloaded the files and 7zip extracted them without any problem.
Are all files named in the same fashion?
CrnlCr.part1 100.431.872 bytes
CrnlCr.part2 100.431.872 bytes
CrnlCr.part3 100.431.872 bytes
CrnlCr.part4 100.431.872 bytes
CrnlCr.part5 100.049.828 bytes
That's what Winrar expects and if it doesn't find a file it may give the 'next archive' prompt.
Also check the file size of the fifth archive.

If its any consolation, I have been having the very same problem. Unrar function with RARzilla worked great for a while. Now, nothing I do seems to work. Dont know how you managed it,i get wrong password message after about 1,min into the process using 7zip.

It can't be the password. When I enter a wrong password for this file, I immediately get a 'not supported archive message'. If 7zip was already extracting when you got the message, there must be somethng wrong with one of the following parts.
By default, 7zip leaves whatever it has extracted on your HD, even after an error message. Check the folder where you extract.

Unrar function with RARzilla worked great for a while. Now, nothing I do seems to work.
On every download ? i just downloaded RarZilla Free Unrar 2.53 and tested it, works fine for me.

Know that on some downloads you will have to enter the password twice to start extraction.

Woofer

Rarzilla has worked fine on just about everything and yes sometimes it asks for the password twice.Dont know what else there is to do having checked the file sizes are the same, redownloaded them all and tried 7zip.These things are sent to test us,think i'll stop before i need a toupee.Thankyou all for trying.......Onwards and upwards.

This has nothing to do with extracting. The video file extracted properly, but you need the right video codec.
Use a program like Mediainfo, Avicoded or Gspot to determine which codec has been used and install that codec.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but a piece of free software simply called "The Extractor" is a good alternative to WinRar.At least,it works well for me and it's been very well received on downloads.com,here

Hi!everytime i do download rar files with 4-5 parts,i have the same problem:
i do start extracting the first file(1),and then, when i try to extract the second one,it says it has already a fila named 1,overwrite?and it doesn't open no more files.so i cannot see more than the first part.
i cannot rename or change the name of the files, and never opens more files .
what can i do?
thanks

all files are the same size, except for the last one.

Make sure all the files are in one folder.then right click on the first file, then click extract here if that does not work the files are corrupt or your winrar program needs replacing.

it doesn't ask me to extract here,or there.it just does it.
then, when I go for the second file,it asks me if overwrite,or not.
do you have to replace rarzilla the program sometimes?

sorry,I didn't thank you for your help.
thanks so much.

Try using Winrar, while technically not free all that happens after the trial period is you get a nag screen when doubleclicking rar files,if you use the right click method I described above you don't even get that.

Complete novice (not even sure I'm posting this message properly!) Have Mac OSX 10.4.11 and can't play rar files. Apologies if it's all been explained earlier, but any offers of help on what i've got to do to make the files play? Got no problem with avi and mpegs... but rar and wmv just draw a blank. Thanks in anticipation.

For Mac you can use UnRarX 2.2 to extract:

How to extract the .rar files:

For playing the media files (avi, mpg, wmv, etc) us a mediaplayer for MAC OS X:

Some pointers for MAC users on media players besides VLC Player as found in the Mac OS Programs and Tools (http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t32086-mac-os-programs-and-tools.html) thread.

VLC player (8 up to 23 MB depends on the OS)
Freeware
Versions available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc...
Download:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Freeware media player Movist might be a good alternative next to VLC:
Another very fine (and small) Program for Videoplayback is 'MOVIST' (http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/Movist.shtml).

The WMV-Playback is nearly flawless, especially when jumping back and forth a few frames. Goodbye to all the artifacts, which VLC usually displayed for a few seconds.

Next freeware option could be MPlayer for OSX:
I can recommend the freeware 'MPLayer for OSX' as an alternative to VLC. I use VLC to playback most stuff, but i cannot get it right to play WMV-Files without showing Artifacts for a few seconds after jumping forward or backward.

You can find it on sourceforge: http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/

Flip4Mac to enable wmv playback in Quicktime:

With some movies, when I download the .rar files, one or two will say, in the dialog box, "You have chosen to open <filename> which is a jZip file"; others will say "You have chosen to open <filename> which is a .006 file." When I place them in the same folder, they cannot be extracted. With other movies this is not a problem. So I had no problem with The Very best of Laure Sinclair (they were all jZip and opened); but the files in "Penelope - Una domestica particolare" ended up as two types - some jZip and some avi.003 or avi.005. They are the same size as the jZip files but they don't work. I've tried fiddling with the extensions, but that doesn't help. Can somebody explain?

Its a diferent split filetype and you will need a other tool to join them:
http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t35445-how-to-deal-with-the-001-002-etc-and-001xtm-002xtm-etc-files-.html

Make sure to download all the parts to the same folder and make sure they keep thier .001, .002, .003, etc, as listed, all parts need that extension!

Then you should end up with something like this:

filename.avi.001
filename.avi.002
filename.avi.003
filename.avi.004
filename.avi.005
filename.avi.006
filename.avi.007

When you have it like that then tools like HJSplit or the Mac OS Split&Concat can join it.

Never come across this before.
Just dloaded a film in 4 .rar parts.
When I tried to unrar, got the usual box asking for a password. I've searched the dload site but there's no sign of a pword but a link to RAR Password Recovery Magic - US$19.99
I'm buggered paying that, I reckon the film (and possibly others) was deliberately uploaded without a pword just to scam people into buying the software.
Is there any freeware for cracking rar pwords?

There are no good tools for cracking passwords unless they are very simple, then you have a chance with password recovery but i never try, i have password recovery software but on a desktop homecomputer it would take years to run a bruteforce attack when password is a bit more complicated.

Your best free "password cracking" tool is to google (just) the filenames of the part(s) you downloaded, when that does not work giving clear results on posts of the OP with password then my advice is to forget it.

What are the filenames?

Thank dubsalute.
The file names are [*** mod edit removed ***].rar through to part.4
I'll just look for another source.
Its just annoying that one can waste time and bandwith dloading stuff that needs a missing pword.

Had a quick look Martynz but be carefull, the filename you gave more or less lead into a minefield of malware and viruses so i removed the filename for security reasons.

Optional password i spotted was: Evileye

Will send you a PM.

I'm having trouble playing a RAR Windows Media Player video I've downloaded from rapidshare. The video plays just fine but for some reason when I try to skip forward the video crashes. Is this common for RAR files and can I fix this? BTW I'm using 7 Zip file manager. I get an error message saying the seeking function is limited and the file is corrupted.

rar is not a video format its a compressed format

is it a wmv file ? or avi ? or mpg ? or mp4 ?

from what you say about skipping forward ......it sounds like a wmv
if it is a wmv file then it needs to be repaired with a program like videofixer.

the end of the file is missing, which is why you cant skip forward, however
mediaplayer classic has settings to enable skipping in incomplete asf/wmv files, but it would be easier to repair the file ... or just convert it to another format with mediacoder (free)

also was the file split into many parts or was it just a single file ?
i ask this because you maybe trying to play the first part of a split file .... the total time of trhe complete file would be shown but only the first few minutes of video data is avalable, once repaired though you would find the total time will have reduced to what it should be.

This sticky thread should have your answer: Freeware Media players | Codecs needed for movie playback when there is no image or audio (http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t63107-freeware-media-players-codecs-needed-for-movie-playback-when-there-is-no-image-or-audio.html).

Personally, I usually use Media Player Classic, Home Cinema Version with ffdshow (mentioned in the 8th and 10th posts), but the VLC player (first post) is a good alternative. GSpot (http://gspot.headbands.com/) (4th post) is a good diagnostic tool.

Multiple Rar File Question: OK, you download multiple RAR parts but then it's saved on my PC without the "001" suffix. HJSPLIT needs that "001" suffix to join them.

If you rename the rar files on the PC, you get the warning that renaming the folder might change the type....and that's apparently what happened as the RAR icon changed and then, while HJSPLIT worked, I couldn't unzip it using RARZILLA or the 7-Z program.

If you download a film in say 6x100mb and 1x50mb, it should unrar as a 650mb film.

If it doesn't can you show an example?

This is all a lot of goddamned work and puzzle solving, when all you need to do is upload in a server-friendly venue...like WMV.
