Very few mainstream actresses have done porn. I can think of only two actresses right now that managed to move from porn to mainstream and neither of them had what I'd call A-list mainstream careers.

(BTW, the two I'm thinking of are Traci Lords and Ashlyn Gere. And Ms. Gere changed her credited name for mainstream.)

Well, I would have to add Fran Drescher, Barbara Streisand, Marilyn Monroe, Brinke Stevens, Rose Marie, Jayne Mansfield, Madonna, Helen Mirren, Keeley Hazell, Abi Titmuss, Gena Lee Nolan, Imogen Thomas, Hedy Lamarr, Cameron Diaz, Joan Crawford, Sasha Grey, etc. A lot of young actresses did what they had to to survive while waiting for their big break. Actors, too, like Sly Stallone. And then there's the celeb sex tapes, like Paris Hilton, Pam Anderson, and so on. And on. And on.

Sorry Brian but I don't agree. A lot of the ones you list as "porn" are home sex tapes released without the subject's permission, big difference IMO. The rest are unsubstantiated rumors and wishful thinking. For example, I've seen the supposed Barbara Streisand video and its appears to be a look-alike to me. (The fact that the only copies floating around of it are of such crap quality that its hard to tell is just another indication to me that its not actually Barbara Streisand.) The Cameron Diaz videos are not hard-core porn, they're her in leather lingerie giggling as she try's to look tough while slapping someone so lightly with a whip its almost a caress. The Pamela Anderson videos started out as home-made tapes, were stolen, and the matter went to court. (ATM I can't remember if she lost the case or just decided that since they couldn't get it off the 'net they might as well make a buck off it.) The Gena Lee Nolin video is a home tape that was released by her ex-boyfriend or husband after they broke up. (Another one that went to court IIRC but I'm not sure about that.)

I have yet to see or hear of a substantiated, intended for distribution, porn video of a mainstream actress made before they made it as a mainstream actress other than the two I mentioned. (Sasha Grey as I understand it only has one, just released, mainstream movie. Her character in it is a prostitute. We can argue about her in five years. ;) )

Hmmm... The problem with this debate is the inconsistency of the usage of the term "porn." It sounds like it's being used exclusively to describe produced-for-profit hardcore sex video. Of course, if you asked my grandma (or most district attorneys), Playboy is DEFINITELY pornography- so in that sense Tia Carrere is on the list (yay! On-topic!).

Accepting the narrow definition described above, however, I think the most excellent DTravel is forgetting the international scene: Hsu Chi, Tabatha Cash, Rebecca Lord, and Ally Mac Tyana all started in hardcore porn video and went on to appear in mainstream films (with varying degrees of success). I would also include Vanity (the one who sang with Prince, not the shemale pornstar), although the stuff she was in was tame and incredibly amateur by comparison to today's adult video market.

I know some are debatable, but some are also undeniable..like Fran Drescher, (I have pics), Streisand, (I have pics, also), Marilyn, (Joe DiMaggio tried buying it all up), Stevens, Crawford, Mirren, Titmuss, Marie, Mansfield, Madonna...all these are pretty well documented if you care to Google them. I don't want to get into a pissing match, here, it's just pretty naive to think many of these actresses didn't make some pornos while trying to survive and get noticed in their fight to stardom. After all, sex was their weapon. Besides pornos, the numbers of aspiring actresses that worked their way in by means of the casting couch would be astounding, if we ever knew the truth of it!

Well, if we could figure out some way to work blowing something up in to it I'd say we send it off to the MythBusters. :D But since I can't see how we're going to manage that I'm just going to make two suggestions. 1) Let's move this discussion to a separate thread in a discussion area; and 2) post your proof. You say you have photographic proof for some of them, upload it so we can all examine it.

(Personally I don't consider the results of an internet search as "proof". Its way too easy to give incorrect information that way, both knowingly and unknowingly.)

When you use words like "porn" people tend to assume having sex on camera, which most of those mentioned didn't do. Yeah, a lot of them did nudes, some even before their main stream career. Yawn. I'm not sure leaked sex tapes count either. If they were made after being famous in main stream movies/tv then it doesn't fit the time sequence stated in the thread subject.

Tia Carrere didn't do nudity until later in her career. Even if you consider simple nudity to be porn, it still wouldn't fit the thread subject.

Brinke Stevens would be soft porn before getting into B-movies.

Very few hard core porn stars have made it to main stream and those that have, have mostly had either bit parts in major movies or major parts in B movies. One example for bit parts in major movies would be Jenna Jameson in Howard Stern's Private Parts.

Sasha Grey managed a major part in an art house movie. I'm not sure it's fair to call it a B movie but it wasn't really a main stream Hollywood movie either. That might be the highest that a hard core porn girl has made it in main stream movies.

If soft porn/mere nudity qualifies, then dozens of Playboy playmates and a number of Penthouse pets would qualify at least in B movies, though a few made it to more main stream stuff (usually bit parts). Teri Weigel did the bit parts in major movies thing before going to hard core and so went the other direction.

Renee Bond did B-movies and at least one made-for-TV movie. Kelly Royce made some B-movies as "Juliet James" after doing hardcore for a few years. Suzannah Britton starred in a couple of X features and some loops before getting small roles in major Hollywood films as "Barbara Peckinpah". Julia Parton started in hardcore straight porn then alternated between B-movies, nude glamor and hardcore lesbian porn. Marilyn Chambers started in porn, made some B-movies then returned to porn, the same career path as Ginger Lynn. Many of them appeared in movies from director Chuck Vincent, who had a successful porn career before making a string of erotic thrillers and comedies. He often featured porn actors and actresses in his non-porn films including Tracey Adams, Veronica Hart, Krista Lane and Georgina Spelvin. Veronica Hart of course also appeared in "Boogie Nights" with Nina Hartley. I'm sure there are more.

As was pointed out all of these women either had starring roles in B-movies or small roles in mainstream movies. There's no evidence for the ancient Joan Crawford rumors, the "Barbara Streisand", "Marilyn Monroe", etc. stories have all been debunked, and anyone who says otherwise should be prepared to post some photos or videos. I can't think of any actresses who started off in porn and later starred in a mainstream Hollywood feature - perhaps something like this has happened in Europe. If anyone knows a name please share.

The claim that Fran Drescher did porn? De-bunked as far as I know. The only pics I've ever seen were of a mis-identified brunette from some three-way scene with Seka. Very small resolution and grainy to hide the fact that it wasn't actually her.

If memory serves, the source of the Fran Drescher item, the misidentified brunette, was actually Kandi Barbour a well known late 70s- early 80s porn actress. The Barbara Streisand question was debunked simply by comparing the size of the hands, something that doesn't change over time. "Babs" has notably long slender fingers, while the girl in the grainy b&w footage has short stubby fingers. For years the afore mentioned loops were offered as a compilation tape that also contained the Marilyn Monroe item as well as a grainy b&w clip purporting to be former major league baseball player and star of tv's "Rifleman", Chuck Connors, engaged in hardcore gay sex on a park bench.
