how do you guys store your porn?

alright guys, my harddrive is filling up. i used to be able to store it all on a CDR (600meg) but now i have so much more. I dont wanna use multiple CDRs because the more I have, the more of a chance my girlfriend will find them ;) so last christmas, i bought one of those DVDRW(?) that can hold like 4.3 gig or something. i put all my porn on there. six months later, i was having problems with it, my computer couldn't read the information on it, it was corrupted somehow. i even bought software to retrieve it but to no avail. has anyone else ever had this problem? i'm scared to try another dvdrw(maybe it was just the disc?) but i have very little room left on my computer. what do you guys do?

You could take hidden your second drive and use it only when you can and want.

i have about 20 000 pics that use about 2 gigabytes on my harddisk. it almost takes forever to watch them all. be critical and throw the trash pics away when neccessary. use "dup detector" (freeware).
if you don't trust your girlfriend use win pro multiple users or throw the girl away too... -.-

What about an external hard disc connected via USB2? (I don´t know if it´s an old or newer laptop). You could get 200 - 400 GB per drive and that means a lot of porn. :))

You could install a mobile rack and buy another HD. Use this one as second drive into the mobile rack only when you want, and keep it hidden in a secure place! Mobile rack+an ordinary HD are cheaper than a external HD via USB, and you can use it even if your pc is a bit old and hasn't USB 2.0 ports.

Archiving requires a bit of knowledge. I read on web and in document for national library (which shouldn't be spreading myths, I believe):
1) burn to reliable media ( I used Verbatim CDs, all are still readable after many years, so far I know and Imation DVDs - no complaints there either, but I have the oldest just year or two)
2) burn the media at lowest speed possible (which is 4x for me)
3) store media in place which is dark, dustless and stable temperature (well, table draw and having cakes always closed is enough I hope)
4) write on media _only_ with pen designed for this (chemicals from other will reach and react with the information storing layer one day)
5) it was also recommended to store each media in good wrapper (not just piece of plastic), but I ignore it - I don't have warehouse :}

This is cheaper and probably even more reliable then external disks, IMHO.

Burning mechanics could be also good and bad I guess, but I don't have any reasonable advise there, haven't heard about one being bad or good for long liveness of data.

So far I had unreadable archive only a few times and just because I had DVD lying around desk without cover for too long and it got dirty and scratched.

As to hiding from you girlfriend, I know a guy who makes autoruns on his CDs which launches some confusing application which his wife would be afraid to click on :)

i've fixed many a Dvd and Cd that originally seemed corrupt, with that stuff.

as for storing the porn, get used to making tons of back up discs,
and keep a set or two in a good hidden place.
you can't argue when it is alot easier to store, than endless piles of magazines.

its cheaper these days to buy hard disks rather than use optical media like dvd-r. you can buy a 1tb disk these days for £75 which is the equivilent of what? 250 dvds?

Think of the space you save too - a hard disk just fits nicely inside one of those old VHs cases.

I have a pair of external Lacie drives - dual discs - 1TB each all input is mirrored on the second drive

pics are stored as jpegs with minimum compression
scans are stored as tiffs

all vids are converted to .avi mpeg 4 larger format depending on original size - 20+fps

I use external drives for storing everything, works fine.
Western Digital and LaCie make good stuff for regular storage.

I use this renamer for jpegs but it works for movie files, too ( does'nt rename mov, avi etc but the titles will be renamed to numbers )

Not freeware but the best for PC is ACDSee - has all you need for viewing, sorting, changing formats etc...

I keep all my stuff on an external USB drive - Maxtor is the brand, and I bought it because you can password-protect the contents. Actually bought two of them, for back-up. Very secure. Best not to keep stuff sitting on your computer's hard drive.

Every file on my Mac is crypted by system, and additionally I'm using freeware Altomac Hide Folders on MacOS X.

Easy to handle, program is password protected, too. Btw. I stored the program on an USB-stick and not in program folder on internal HD. So if there's no system password for decrypting, no stick, no program and it's password = no chance quick to find the 'special' folders on my external 2.5' HD. ;)

You can encrypt the complete drive so noone (and I mean NOONE!) can access the file without the password... use a strong password though, min 8 letters, digits, capitals and special characters!
Everything stays hidden until you hit a key combination and type in the password, then the encrypted hdd will be assigned a drive letter and can be accessed just like a normal drive. Hit another key combo to "unmount" the drive and hide it again. So my suggestion is to get a second hdd and use truecrypt :)

First I save the files by giving them a prefix-letter for archive purposes, depending on what is featured on the photo, then I just zip the files with the help of a good old MS-dos batchfile that puts everything in the right zip, such as a zip-file with readhead-pics or another one with 'spread'pics.
After zipping the ZIP-files are automatically renamed with very inconspicuous names with no extension.
To unzip I can manually rename them as zip-files but I rather use a set of batchfiles instead to unzip the right zip-files. Again, after unzipping, the zipfile will be renamed to the same inconspicuous name (again, with no extension)

PGP (open source, freeware) is also a good solution. Look for a version that has the PGPDisk utility included (not all versions do.)

Google "Imads PGP 6.58 ckt" for XP. PGPdisk allows you to create an encrypted pseudodisk that mounts with a passphrase. Once it's mounted it's like any other disk, G: drive, H: drive, etc. If it's not mounted it's inaccessible. It has hotkeys to mount and dismount, too, and some other bells and whistles.

I just store pics for now. I have some on CD-R and some on flash drives. Right now I'm saving to a 74.5 GB external hard drive.

I mainly use external storage to keep my porn from hogging hard drive space. I don't really care who knows it's there or not. I'm single and I'm the only one who uses my computer. I don't have anything illegal. The only people who would be looking at my hard drive are tech support. The worst they could say is I'm a pervert, and I couldn't care less. I don't think some technician in Bangalore cares either!

I think I've brought this method up before: Share it.

That's right, use Megaupload (for example) and upload your bigger, gotta keep them video files. Arrange the images of all your favorite models and zip them (make a copy of some of the better shots as a sample for others) and send 'em up into cyberspace.

Some of the marginal stuff - you might have to get ruthless and clean house once in a while and just delete, delete, delete.

But once you've uploaded all your most precious possesions you can always rest assured that if you really need to see that 895 mb video comp of Barbara Jordan it will always be there. And you will have brought joy to many others and you'll have a nice neat spacious hard drive to start filling up once again.

Maybe a master index of places you've saved stuff would help, especially if you "get around" - you know to sites other than VEF!

Yeah, I suppose that's true, but it could be embarrassing to approach a stranger about your stash - and even more so with a friend/relative/neighbour. I've got a few videotapes that are just sitting on the floor of my closet, and that's it as far as physical goes. When I was a teenager, I had a tape or two stuffed between comics in a longbox. It probably ruined some Batman comics (the tape was down at the bottom between some comics, and the comics behind it tended to bend over forward to conceal it). I don't think those particular comics have any value anyway.

I used to keep a few magazines in a electric car set box on a shelf in my closet, but one day, I was lazy and left them on a closet shelf. That happened to be the day my mom was in there to hang up my coat or something, but she didn't see them. I would have lost my Angela Baron for sure! ;)
